True Detective Season 1 Episode 5: The Secret Fate of All Life
Tonight on True Detective, the spoils of a solved case are shared by Hart and Cohle; troubling new intelligence is revealed by Papania and Gilbough.
At the Sportsman’s Bar, Cohle and his hostage wait for the lead Cohle thinks will get him closer to Reggie. The middle man says he sees evil in Cohle’s eyes and doesn’t trust him, walking away with a reminder not to call him again. Hart is working with Cohle and immediately begins trailing Reggie’s partner. The boys meet up in the location Hart believes they’ll find their man.
Sidestepping anti-intruder devices, the boys begin the trail to Ledoux. Tension builds as they stumble upon the small shack viewers know from a previous episode to be Ledoux’s place. They spot the man Cohle met with earlier. As we fast forward to present day, Cohle and Hart describe the scene very differently from how it really happened.
Guns in hand, right at the shack, the two go in cautiously. Hart hears a noise and hears someone walking out. Hart handcuffs Ledoux and forces him outside on his knees. Ledoux starts talking crazy, trying to creep out Cohle. Ledoux’s partner comes out and Cohle tells him to put his hands up. Hart goes back in the shack and sees something disturbing enough to come out and shoot Reggie in the head. Reggie’s partner tries to run off and Cohle shoots him. Now it is obvious why the two in present day explained the story as an ambush by Ledoux where they were forced to act in self defence. Back at the scene they try to make the scene look the way they planned to explain it. The two walk off with one girl each in their arms that were locked in the shack.
After solving the case, things seemed to begin getting better. Maggie and Hart are trying to work things out and going to counseling. Marty is trying to assure Maggie that he has changed and is working on his life. Marty, in present day, is talking about his past and reflecting on his life, felling guilty for not being around more. The past now is a few years after the case is solved and Hart is back at home. They are sitting at the table eating dinner as he is questioning Audrey’s drastic change in appearance. In a later seen, Marty picks up his daughter after the police caught her in a car with two boys half undressed, having sex with two 19 year old boys. After a heated argument she tells Marty to f*ck off and Marty slaps her. Audrey runs to her room and Maggie chases after her, begging to know what’s wrong.
Back in time to 2002, Cohle is interrogating a man, suggesting he pleads insanity as his defense. Slowly after convincing him he is on his team, Cohle gets a full confession from the guy. Cohle tells him he just copped to a double murder. The guy comes back at him asking for a deal because there are things he knows. He tells Cohle he knows about the women in the woods and that he will tell him about the Yellow King. Cohle gets crazy and begins choking him. When Hart arrives, Cohle tells him they need to go to Appleville. In the car, Cohle tells Hart he thinks the task force was in on a plan against them. Apparently , Cohle believes the Yellow King is still killing in the woods. Cohle and Hart go to get more information about the man Cohle interrogated for double murder. When they arrive at the jail, they see he has supposedly shot himself.
Back to present day, Hart questions why the detectives seem to be all over Cohle. He knows they must know something. Papania and Gilbough hand him a file saying his story is not adding up.
Present day interview with Cohle, the boys question why someone fitting his description was at five of their last crime scenes be five different people. They continue to tell him about discrepancies after asking him for his case files. Cohle continues to make it hard on them, telling them they need to get a warrant or arrest him if they thinks he’s done something. Papania and Gilbough try to convince Hart Cohle’s drinking may have forced him down the wrong path. While Hart tries to defend Cohle, they begin working on him to break his confidence in him. They ask about the altercation between them.
Back in time, Cohle is seen doing some investigating of his own. The last scene ends with Cohle putting gloves on and likely leading us down another path for next week.
