Tonight on Utopia, the 15th and final pioneer will arrive. The narrator says anyone not pulling their weight is causing problem. Bri is sleeping in again and they wonder if they need to move her off the job. Mike and Red are annoyed at Bella. They think the water filter is stupid and wonder if she’ll want all organic food next. Hex and Taylor are taking care of the livestock when the cow head butts him. He says he’s going to punch the cow and she offers him a hug.
Today they get the 15th pioneer that will replace the preacher. Nikki hopes it will be a guy for her. The bell rings and Dedeker says that’s them. Hex runs to greet him – it’s Ernesto (aka Ernie), a former Navy guy and contractor who’s there for a new start. Taylor helps him carry in his box. They introduce him to the crew. He tells them what he does and Josh jokes that he’s just there to hook up her water filter. He says he’s straight and Bella is immediately flirting with him and tells the others that he’s hers. Josh says yea – guess he’s tired of her cloying attention.
The bell ring again and Aaron says it’s time for the next Utopia Experience session. The visitors chat with their favorite pioneers. One says she’s there just for Josh. She loves that he’s so tall and he says she’s just his size. Ernesto is still trying to fit in and Rob says it’s hard to have someone new. Bella is happy to introduce him and she purrs at him and tells the visitors she’d marry him with a heartbeat. Aaron fills Ernesto in on the personality types at Utopia.
He tells him about Dedeker’s free love thing, that Bri is with Chris and Taylor with Hex. He then tells Ernesto that Bella hasn’t gotten laid in six years and to watch out for her. Amanda calls a meeting since it’s her turn to lead and she is adding Rob to her reign. She says any conflict will be decided by she, Rob and Dedeker. One says it sounds like a monarchy and Mike says it’s more like an oligarchy. She leaves Bri over the barn, Bella on the garden and Josh over the house.
But Red is mad that he wasn’t included. He had offered to take over the barn and tells Nikki he’s tired of being treated like he’s stupid. He curses and rants and she says it’s hard since he hasn’t wanted to be part of the team. He stomps off to smoke. Mike counts out the money for the group but Red sits outside moping. They are at about $2,800. Rob says he doesn’t think they gave Ernesto a chance to get to know them because of the experience.
Ernesto tells them his full name – Ernesto Santana – and he says he’s there because he thinks Utopia should be a place of peace, prosperity and a democracy. He tells them he lost his wife four years ago and that was part of what led him there for a fresh start. He says he wants to be of help and service and will give the group his best. Red rants to Amanda that he’s surrounded by idiots. He says he can do everything there but no one lets him into leadership.
Josh asks Amanda if Red is making waves because he wants to leave. Josh tells her that Red knows a little about a lot of things but not a lot about anything. Rob thinks Red needs to go. Taylor and Hex go off to make out and he tells her they could rob the place and take all the food. He asks what she would have done if he didn’t show up and she says she wouldn’t have a cuddle buddy. They all start talking about donuts. Several of them cuddle together in a puppy pile.
Before dawn, Ernesto sleeps and at 6 am the others get up quietly to go to work but Red stomps around making a lot of noise. The others say he’s being intentioally rude. Amanda finds him and asks if he’s mad since he was stomping around. He says consideration is a two way street. Amanda walks away disgusted with him and calls him stupid. Red goes to see Mike and says he’s thinking about secession. Remember, he tried this already with Dave to form the Utopia State of Freedom.
Hex, Rob and Taylor agree that Red need to go. Mike tells Red he could be on board but it has to be done right because he’ll only get one chance. I don’t think Mike is on board with Red, but Mike is annoyed at how much everyone has been blowing through money. He had wanted them to just live on basics – rice and beans – until they got the garden going. They call it the rice and beans revolution.
Bella corners Ernesto for a talk. She calls his wife his ex-wife which is a horrible way to refer to his wife that died – he’s a widower not a divorcee. She asks what happened and he says it was a heart attack. He says the time here will force him to confront it and turn over a new leaf so he can work through it. Bella tells him that he doesn’t have to prove anything to them. She hugs him.
The once a month is coming up where they get to decide if they want to replace someone. They get a letter that says one person will have to go. As a group, they select two that they think should go and American will nominate a third candidate. The group will then vote from the three. The letter says to make a wise choice and consider who isn’t making enough of a contribution. Rob tells the group they need to take this very seriously.
Hex, Josh and Rob talk about who they think should go and they think American will pick Nikki for some reason. Red goes to talk to some of the others to try and drum up support for his secession move. Rob, Amanda and Dedeker discuss that Red will never be a team player. Rob says it’s always something with Red. Rob says if one of the chicken was always pecking at the others causing problems, they’d eat him. They laugh and say they need to eat Red.
Ernesto is installing Bella’s water filter. They call her into check it out and she dances around giggling. She drinks it and says it’s awesome. What a flake – I know who I’m voting for to go. A neighbor shows up and rings the bell. He’s Jake the beekeeper. He introduces himself to them and tells them he would like to set up some hives up there and can let them have half the honey and wax.
They vote yes but Nikki is busy checking out Jake himself. Taylor tells Jake that she has the hots for him and Jake blushes furiously. Amanda tries to get Red back on board with the group. Mike says secession can’t work with one or two people. Mike says he thinks Red has the right to do it but Amanda asks what comes next. Rob says if he wants to leaves, he’s out for good and can’t be part of the group. Rob says he doesn’t know why Red came back last time he walked away.
Hex tells Nikki to text Jake since she has his phone number. She says he’ll be back this weekend and she doesn’t need to chase him but Hex tells him to chase it down and take it from him. She giggles and says he’s cute. Hex asks if they’ll have bees at the wedding. Kristen and Hex are working on a new business venture – they are going to auction off dates with the Utopia men. They go to get dating profiles on the men.
Ernestos says his hobby is laying pipe and Mike says he has excessive hair. Taylor says to list him as Malibu Ken. Chris gets listed with heartbreaker eyes. Josh has Bella scratch his back and says it’s the way to his heart. Hex tells them they are gross and to just get it over with but Bella says they’re just friends and Josh says he doesn’t sleep with women he respects.
Chris and Ernesto are fishing and cleaning the fish for dinner. Aaron praises them and they all father for fish tacos but Red sits outside eating rice and beans. Amanda wants to talk to the group about Red. She tells them he is no longer part of them. She tells them not to eat his food and says he won’t eat part of theirs and will just spend his share of the money. Amanda says if he falls on hard times, it’s not their responsibility to help him or take him back in.
[9:47:39 PM] Rachel Rowan: The group agrees but Bella says it’s bullshi*. At breakfast, Bella says she had a dream that Mike kissed her. Dedeker says she’s okay with sharing. Amanda asks for volunteers for key roles and tells them to prepare a speech on why they’re good for the role. Rob says he wants to lead the toilet. He’s sitting on it and they ask him to look at them when he’s talking so he slides the doors open and everyone laughs.
Bella asks Taylor to help her with the hose but he says it’s not an anchor and she can do it herself. She says it’s hard or she wouldn’t have asked. He tells her she’s being lazy and that his mom is older than her and could do it. She nags at him and he tells her that she’s the rudest person there. He tells her to get away from him.
She goes to complain to Kristen and says she needed help and that no one will let her do anything without people jumping on her. She says she can’t take it anymore. Rob overhears and mocks her. She’s slamming around and Taylor tells her to calm down. She screams at him to shut up. Bri says she can’t stand to wake up to hear her yelling at people.
Taylor tells Hex he wants Bella gone and she says she doesn’t think that’s the criteria to use but he says his vote stands. Ernesto is chatting up Nikki and he says he prefers in-depth conversations to get to know people. She says it can be hard to open up and be vulnerable. She tells him that she’s genuinely happy that he’s there.
It’s time for the job discussion. Amanda says it will be their first election. The barn, garden and construction work are up for leadership. She calls for barn nominations. No one says anything so Bri stays in charge. Next is construction. Josh says he’s like to stay in charge of that. Next is the garden and Hex raises her hand. She says she wants to take it over and figure out how to work it better.
Bella says she’s done with the meeting and walks away. Bella is blurred – it looks like she may not be wearing appropriate bottoms. The group votes to give the garden over to Hex. Bella has lost her post in charge of the garden and goes to cry in the barn. Bella goes to talk to Ernesto. She explains to him how suicide plants work that take on the bugs and calls it a sacrificial plant.
I don’t know – my grandpa and uncle were avid gardeners and that doesn’t seem kosher. She’s a nutter. Mike tells Dedeker he’s never been happier in his life than right there in that moment. They celebrate with big plates of pasta and beer. They also enjoy Red’s homemade wine. He sits with them but then walks out. Bella decides to go outside and sleep alone. Chris tells her she needs pants. Hex says she’s 42 and can decide what she wants.
Bella takes her stuff to the chicken coop. Kristen says Bella has a fever but won’t take any medicine and wants to sweat it out (that part I actually agree with). Amanda still thinks Red should go. Nikki says she thinks she can’t trust Aaron or Red. Hex goes out to tell Bella she can come back to the house and tells her she saw a coyote out there yesterday and to come inside and be safe. Bella thanks her and heads in and then Hex goes to make out with Taylor.
Voting is now open at UtopiaTV.com to nominate the person you think should go. You have to register for a passport. Voting ends at 9 am PST tomorrow morning (Saturday). Tuesday we’ll find out who is up for replacement.
