Tonight on ABC American Crime airs with an all new Thursday March 19, season 1 episode 3 called, “Episode Three,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Carter’s sister shows up to support him, but can’t hide her disapproval of his way of life or his involvement with Aubry. [Caitlin Gerard] Meanwhile, Alonzo [Benito Martinez] gets an update on Tony’s [Johnny Ortiz]case but begins to question his parenting skills; Hector falls into deeper trouble when he’s recognized by a gang member; and Barb works with the head of an activist group and tries to get another hate-crime charge added against Carter.
On the last episode, thirty-six hours had passed and reality was starting to sink in for all sides. Barb and Russ had to come face-to-face with the suspects, Carter and Aubry, for the first time at the arraignment hearing. For Aubry and Carter, the hearing was their first opportunity to see one another since being arrested. Elsewhere, Tony found himself terrified and alone as he got placed into juvenile detention. The gravity of the situation weighs heavy on his father, Alonzo. Hector’s legal troubles were compounded when the investigators discover an existing warrant for his arrest in Mexico. With more unsettling facts being uncovered about Matt and Gwen, relations between Barb and Russ, and Tom and Eve grow increasingly strained as they disagreed on where Matt’s body should be buried. Barb was not messing around when she said she wanted her son’s case to be identified as a hate crime and on tonight’s new episode of “American Crime” she’s even gotten assistance advocacy group to back her on this. Apparently one of the men that killed her son was involved in a bar fight in which he called someone a white b*tch and then later this same man stated all white people should die. So Barb does have some ground here but, because she and her family are white, the DA doesn’t want to get caught going for a racial basis charge. Not when he knows he can get possibly laughed at in the press.
Because that’s another thing. Once the press gets involved then they tend to write a story and closely stick to the narrative even if it’s not entirely true. That’s what they did to Alonzo when they pretended to “interview” him about his son and that’s something that is going continue to happen throughout this case.
Facts like the murder victim being a suspected drug dealer and one of the “culprits” being a dumb kid are the type of things that get swept aside.
Plus, as hate crimes goes, Carter actually has someone that would stand in his defense. His girlfriend is after all white. And although she could get into trouble standing by him, Aubry refuses to give up on her man.
Her family flew out to see her and to talk her into getting help but when Aubry said she didn’t believe Carter hurt anyone – her family attempted to fight her on it. Her father, for one, was definitely angry at the idea that she wanted his help in supporting another cokehead. And that addict also might have killed two people.
And then there’s Russ. Russ had lost his job back home because he was stuck awaiting his son’s trial and now he’s busy trying to find another one just so he can support himself. So Russ doesn’t want to have to deal with Barb or with his in-laws.
Barb still hasn’t collected their son’s body from the morgue and his in-laws are fighting her to have Matt buried near their home so that their comatose daughter could be near her husband. But, on top of that, the Carlins are also fighting to get their hands on their daughter’s personal things. Like her emails.
It seems they want to know who their daughter was before she was attacked.
However, sometimes it’s better not to know. And that’s one of the reasons Gwen’s mother stayed silent for so long. For she did know about her daughter’s other activities so to speak and she didn’t want to be the one to tell her husband what their daughter was up to.
You see Eve and her daughter Gwen used to talk all the time and so she’s known more about her daughter’s marriage that she’s ever let on. And do you what to know what the truth is? Because it’s not really the white picket All-American fence Barb wants to paint. No, the truth is Gwen was cheating on her husband because she was unhappy. Matt was in too deep with drugs and his wife had said she felt scared about some of his new friends. So Gwen told her mother she wanted out and Eve told her she shouldn’t throw away her marriage so easily.
For better or for worse! And Eve told her daughter that it was her duty to help Matt through his problems. So when Eve’s husband found out what she did – he couldn’t look at her.
It was hard finding out that in the end he didn’t know either his daughter or his wife.
And that’s something Alonozo has to deal with as well. For although it was wrong of him to fully trust the police, especially with his son’s freedom on the line, it was Tony that literally had everything he could want and still be incredibly greedy. So his daughter didn’t believe it was fair that their father is now questioning his own parenting. It wasn’t his fault, it was Tony’s.
Now Tony wants to come home and he can’t.
His probation worker reviewed his case and their family dynamic and he ruled it would detrimental if Tony was allowed to go home. And he didn’t even say it was directly Alonzo’s fault. The PO saw for himself that Alonzo does love his kids and though he’s not the most easygoing – he only wants what’s best for his son.
But the problem was Tony. Tony refuses to take responsibility for what his actions led to and everything he did before was done in some misguided attempt to go against his father. So it’s Tony’s fault that he has to stay in the juvenile detention center and yet watch him blame his father.
THE END!
