Tonight on ABC American Crime airs with an all new Thursday March 26, season 1 episode 4 called, “Episode Four,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Russ [Timothy Hutton] and Barb’s [Felicity Huffman] youngest son, Mark, [David Hoflin] comes to Modesto to support his estranged parents as emotions run high when new information allows Carter’s defense team to be granted a bail hearing. Meanwhile, Aliyah wants her brother to stay away from Aubry; and Tony gets out of juvenile hall on a probationary release into Alonzo’s care.
On the last episode, Nearly a month after the arraignment of the accused, the emotional complications of all involved continued to deepen. Carter’s sister Aliyah (Regina King), a devout Muslim, arrived to support her brother despite their strained relationship, and her stark disapproval of his involvement with Aubry. Simultaneously, Alonzo received an update about Tony’s case that shed light on his family life which made him question himself as a good father. Hector’s troubles compound when he’s recognized by a fellow gang member and his loyalty was tested. Barb continued her relentless fight for justice and worked with Nancy Straumberg (Lili Taylor), who was the head of a Victim’s Rights Group to try and get another hate crime charge added against Carter. On tonight’s episode as per the ABC synopsis, “Russ and Barb’s youngest son, Mark (guest star David Hoflin), arrives in Modesto in support of his estranged parents. At the same time, the families of both victims begin to lose control of their emotions as they hear that Carter’s defense team has been granted a bail hearing due to new information. Carter’s sister, Aliyah, makes it clear to Carter that he must follow her conditions and stay away from Aubry, whose parents pressure her to attend an NA meeting. Meanwhile, Tony is processed out of juvenile hall on a probationary release and into Alonzo’s care.”

New evidence has come up over the course of the investigation and from the look of it, it can actually clear Carter’s name in the murder of Matt Skokie and also with the assault charge on his wife. But on tonight’s all new episode of “American Crime” Carter is only now realizing that he might have do more than just be innocent, if that’s the truth anyways, in order to be free one day. The sad truth is that if he wants to be his own man again then he has to know how to sell himself to the jury and to the media.
Because both have already written him off that thanks to the color of his skin and that his track record makes people automatically believe thug instead of misunderstood.
Carter was into drugs and he has a white addict for a girlfriend. So his sister told him that he needed distance himself from both of those images. He needed to shave and start standing up straight in court and he also needed to keep Aubrey from the courtroom. And while that sounds harsh – Aubrey’s addiction is literally written all over her.
Her family flew out to try and get her some help but even as she takes their money – she continues to use to drugs. And even a bling man can see it in her face that she’s high. For others, though, like Carter then he doesn’t have to see her. He can hear it in her voice.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims are pushing for some sort of resolution. They’re currently fighting over where they should bury Matt and when Barb isn’t using her other son Mark in a manipulative tug of war with Russ – she tries to fight for Matt by all but asking for the death penalty.
Consequently, everyone was furious when they heard Carter had been granted a bail hearing. And no matter what the ADA tried to tell them to reassure them that they could get Carter – Gwen’s parents knew differently. Hence they were probably the only ones looking at the case realistically.
Their daughter had slept around and Matt was doing and selling drugs. So with the facts being the way they are – they were giving up hope on ever receiving justice. Not only was Gwen’s rape dropped off the list of charges but the gun that was found on Carter did not match the weapon that was used on Matt.
So really all that was left was Barb’s denial because she still held onto the idea that her son was the same good boy she raised.
The judge on the other hand was looking at the case and only the case. And there wasn’t enough evidence to keep Carter locked up unconditionally. So she agreed to grant him bail and his sister agreed to pay it for him. But on one condition. She told him no Aubry.
Aliyah and her friends were fighting more than just Carter’s charges. According to her, they were fighting for every black man that was assumed to be guilty. So she didn’t him hurting himself by throwing all his chances away on someone like Aubry.
Towards the end of the episode, a miracle happened. Gwen, Matt’s wife, began to wake up and that kind of made her brother-in-law Mark finally acknowledge something he was holding back. For it looks like he knew the truth about his brother.
Mark told Gwen’s parents that his brother was always into drugs. Then Barb found out and she pushed her son into enlisting in order to straighten him out. So Matt was never this innocent boy she’s been trying to paint and she knew what he was but didn’t want to face it.
Thus Mark ended up helping Gwen’s parents by showing them his own dysfunctional family and that made them want to accept their daughter as she is instead of getting angry at what she wasn’t.
She was simply flawed!
And there are others like her. Take Tony for instance; who started out as a good kid, but then slowly began to change after he was thrown into the system. You see Tony had apparently made some friends in juvenile detention and they helped him while he was in there. Edgar had actually protected him in the beginning from the other guys and introduced him to some other friends. But that’s not where his helpfulness ended.
It seems Tony was told exactly what to say to his probation worker that would allow the man to grant him an early release. And before he left, he carried a message from his new friend Edgar.
