Carter running was the worst thing he could have done. By doing that he lost the bail money his sister had raised in his name. And by following Aubrey, he found himself in even more trouble than before.

And for what?

It was Aubrey’s idea to make a run to the border. It was Aubrey that got him involved in assault case and who later got him into trouble for being in possession of an illegal substance. Yet now that she’s ok and has survived a near fatal drug overdose – it’s she that is about to get offered a plea deal. And its Carter that’s back in jail.

Meanwhile Barb and Russ finally have something in common again and that’s their anger with the judge for allowing Carter to get released in the first place. So when they found out he tried to run – that escalated already fraught emotions. And Barb ended up venting her supposed frustrations with “the system” to the media.

She swore on live TV that she never believed or taught that to her children. That is despite what happened last week when she spoke with her son Mark. And then, just to prove she wasn’t bringing race into her son’s case, she brought up Mark’s Asian fiancée. Almost as if that was proof of how a great and understanding mother she is.

Yet, no one besides other people like her are actually falling for Barb’s shtick. And that includes the advocate that initially took up her case. See Barb’s advocate was a mother like her and she too lost a child. But Nancy didn’t turn out like Barb. She grieved and her grief didn’t turn her into a hateful person. Or a delusional one.

Barb can pretend all she likes was the perfect parent, but her family was messed up long before Matt was murdered. And that can’t have all been Russ’s fault.

Mark knows his parents aren’t the greatest and that’s why he doesn’t try pretend with them. He told Russ that he didn’t know Matt. Not the real Matt anyways and neither did Barb. His parents only saw what they wanted to see and he just doesn’t have time to hold their hands.

And that’s a philosophy Tony can hop on board with.

Jenny was attacked, Alonzo’s building got tagged, and the whole family was thrown out of church. Yet Alonzo refused to acknowledge any of that to the shrink they were ordered to see. Instead all he told her was how much he wished things could go back to the way they were. As if the past was so great.

Like Barb, Alonzo stuck his head in sand if he didn’t like his reality. And he’s still doing that even though he’s been warned by Tony’s social worker. So eventually Tony did the exact thing Alonzo feared – he turned into another kid destined for the system.

Tony began hanging out with guys he met through his friend at the juvenile detention center. And they got him intro drinking, they brought him around, and they got him to go looking for the guy that assaulted his sister. All of which wasn’t good but when put together can only cause damage.

As for Aubrey, she was offered a deal. Along with Hector. And while he couldn’t wait to negotiate immunity – Aubrey seriously considered jail. That’s how much she didn’t want to hurt Carter.

Though at this point, no one can possibly help him. Another victim came up and gave a statement in which Carter used a racial slur against him and now because of that Barb has won. She later got the officials to add special circumstances onto the list of charges. So Carter has to fight hate crime charges with no one believing he’s innocent.

And that goes for his sister as well. She too is questioning whether or not she was wrong about him.
