Ariana Grande is taking up a feminist cause. The “Problem” singer and her mother have been taking shots at a handful of women’s and men’s magazines for their role in gender stereotypes. Looks like the diva is trying to repair her ‘second most hated’ image.
It all started when Ariana’s mom, Joan Grande, took to Twitter and posted photos of the men’s section and the women’s section of a magazine stand. “What’s wrong with this picture??” asked Joan, who obviously was pointing out the topics covered in each section. Ariana Grande responded to her mom’s tweet with the response, “Oh! so women are only interested in tabloids & if I want to read about cars, business, science I have to go to the MEN’S section?”
Ariana and her mom continued their back and forth on Twitter. Ariana was quick to point out that many men are reading Cosmo, Elle and other “women’s” magazines. Joan also made sure to praise Ariana Grande for agreeing with her on the categorization of magazines. Joan was pleased by the response. “And I love you my daughter @arianagrande who is as outraged at injustice and inequality! #ProudMama,” Joan tweeted.
Ariana and her mother Joan’s feminism rant ended up evolving into something else on Ariana Grande’s Twitter feed. The pop star went on to tweet, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t. say. it. respect 1 another. body boundaries! celebrate our differences & stop shaming them.” Then Ariana followed that tweet with another, “dear world, more love pls.” It’s too bad Ariana Grande couldn’t wish for complete sentences.
Apparently Ariana Grande’s first “Dear world” tweet wasn’t enough so she followed right behind it with another, tweeting, “dear world, more compassion, niceness, encouragement, less judgement, intolerance, labeling bullshit pls.” It seems that even Ariana Grande was sick of herself when she fired of the final tweet, “some extra love to those who need it today….. loveee u.”
The entire Twitter exchange between Ariana Grande and her mom have critics of the “Problem” singer snickering. Who is she to take shots at gender norms anyway? Ariana is one of the biggest divas and offenders of the gender stereotype. Ever since coming into her own as an adult pop star. Grande has been sexing up her shows and her song lyrics in order to draw an audience. She wore a bustier and Mickey Mouse ears for a Radio Disney performance of “Problem.”
A quick look at Ariana Grande’s Instagram account doesn’t show the fight of a feminist. It shows sexy photos of Ariana, being cute and girly. The photos show Ariana in tiny tank tops, midriff baring showing shirts and itty bitty dresses.
Ariana Grande complained after her break up with rapper Big Sean that she is way more than a rapper’s ex-girlfriend. She has complained often that she has way more to talk about than boys or bikinis. So why is she not talking then? And why did the whole exchange between Ariana Grande and her mom on Twitter feel so staged?
