#Castle starts now. A guy is on Mars talking about the lack of women. Kim tells Tom to get back to work. Tom says the unit is charred and he may have to replace the power coupling. Then his radio goes staticky and then he screams. The lights flicker then go out. Kate and Castle come home and find Alexis and a new guy David playing laser tag. Then Ben, an older guy, comes down with Martha and Castle says he’s in his PJ’s. Castle says the loft seems crowded. They get a call for a murder scene.

Ryan tells Castle he has to see it. Ryan takes them to mission control and introduces Ed Redley. He says it’s a live feed from a simulation. He says it’s a private venture and Castle says it’s funded by Viggo Jensen. He says he signed up for the program but wasn’t selected. Kate is shocked. The victim died and Kate says they need to see the body. Ed says they have to wear space suits since there’s noxious gas in the simulation chamber.

Ed says Tom was a former Navy pilot who had no immediate family. Ed says there are four remaining specialists inside including the medical specialist Dr. Haroun. Ed says no one has been in or out in the past six months since it started. Ryan gives up the shot to go in so Castle can wear one of the space suits. Castle is over the moon – literally. He’s doing a slow dramatic space walk when Kate strides up and asks if he’s done. Haroun comes out and shows them where the body is.

He says they heard him scream but no one saw it because of the power issues. Kate says he’s been stabbed and Haroun says Tom’s screwdriver is missing. Castle says there won’t be DNA because of the suit the killer was in. Kate says they need to find the murder weapon and take the body to the morgue. Haroun takes them inside to the others. They head inside and Castle is fairly skipping. They listen to the recording of the call.

Kate asks where they were. Mikhail was in engineering and Kim says she, Angela and Haroun were together in the command module. Mikhail says an alarm would have sounded if he went out the door. Kim shows that there are trackers in their arms the computer monitors. The computer speaks up and Haroun says she’s more Siri than Hal. Kate says they all have to come to the precinct. Kim says that’s a problem. Ed says he can’t let her take the astronauts.

Viggo Jensen comes in and says they can’t breach the test. He says he will give full cooperation short of shutting down the simulation. He says this is their space race. Kate says she can get a court order. He says his legal team can block her for months. He says or he’ll give her full cooperation here. Ryan says the tracking data showed everyone was where they said they were. Kate gets a message from Espo and he says they need to see something from Tom’s video diaries.

Tom says he’s starting to see things. He says he could have sworn he saw someone and says it’s not the first time. He says – I don’t think we’re alone. Espo tells the crew to hang tight in case he has more questions. He goes back to Kate and says he talked to all of them but none seem to know what Tom was talking about. Viggo says Tom could have been seeing things. Castle says delusions don’t kill. Kate says the person who killed him could have gotten in and out undetected. Ed says maybe not.

They see that their security system has been hacked including alarm codes and key codes. The hack was done at around 11 at night. Viggo says someone broke through their firewall. He goes to trace the IP address and finds it. He says it’s residential WiFi registered to Clint Granger, a guy who got kicked out and tried to run Tom over in the parking lot seven months ago. Clint says Tom slipped something into his drink so his reaction times would be slow in the final test.

Granger says he’s a pilot not a computer geek and couldn’t have written that code no matter what. He says he was in dinner in Connecticut the night Tom was killed and was out of the country when it was hacked. Kate confirms his alibi. She says it definitely wasn’t Granger. Ryan and Castle debate the merits of space travel. Ryan doesn’t get it but Castle is fascinated by the idea.

Ryan looks at security footage at Granger’s place right before the hack took place. They see him come back out 15 minutes later. The guy’s name is George Reyes. He’s a senior facilities engineer from the simulation and he’s gone missing. His wife Angela is part of the simulation. She says she broke up with him because she had fallen for someone else on the mission. She says it’s not Tom but then admits it’s Kim. She says Reyes could have assumed it was Tom since he flirted with her during training.

Espo says airport security picked Reyes up at the airport headed to San Francisco. He says he and Angela were planning to go to Mars together. Kate asks if he killed Tom but he denies having anything to do with it. He says he was going to sabotage the simulation so Angela would come back to him. He says he was leaving town for a fresh start since she dumped him. He says he was at a bar drinking. He says the hack was keyed to his biometrics and said he doesn’t think anyone could have used it.

Reyes says there may have been another way. He says security there is like a bank vault but there’s always another way in. Kate and Castle are in an abandoned utility access tunnel under the simulation facility. They find chunks of concrete and she asks him to boost her up. He does and says it reminds him of Alien. She admits she applied to go to Mars on Ian Rasher’s program when they were fighting. Kate says someone did tunnel up and says she found the murder weapon.

Castle hears a hiss ad says something is down there with them. They see something that looks like a tentacle flailing around a little ways away. Kate asks what the hell that is. Castle says it is like alien and says it did not look alien. They go to investigate. They see a shadow and go chasing it. It’s a breathing hose and a gas mask to protect them from the simulation fumes. Haroun finds the access point and they tell Viggo it could be a competitor.

Kate says maybe they were working with someone on the simulation. Espo calls and says the weapon she found was what killed Tom. He says Ryan is pulling camera footage to see if they can find someone exiting the access tunnel. Kate tells Viggo to think about who would want to breach the simulation. Kate says she can’t wait to take a hot shower. Then they hear Martha and Ben laughing and singing. They also see Alexis’ shoes and realize she has friends over.

They kiss and Alexis opens the door and says to get a room. Castle says there aren’t any yet. He says he’s going to call a family meeting about the schedule. Ryan says they got nothing from security but they got some DNA off the face mask. Ryan says all the applicants had to submit DNA. The DNA matches Granger. Ryan says they can’t find the guy and he’s not answering his calls. Espo says the gas mask is uncommon and says the mask was purchased to a corporate account for Newton Endeavors.

He found an address in Queens for them. Kate and Castle go to check it out while he goofily quotes some Star Trek. The security guy asks them to leave. Kate flashes a badge and says to open the door. They head inside and see they’re building a set up almost identical to Viggo’s. Castle says this all looks terribly familiar.

They see Ian Rasher and ask for a word. She asks where Granger is and he says he doesn’t know who that is. She says he’s the guy Rasher hired to steal the plans for Viggo’s simulation facility. Castle says he’s falling behind and wanted to win. Kate says after a team member discovered what he was doing, he had him killed. Rasher asks who was killed and Kate says Tom Richwood. He says he had nothing to do with it. She asks again where Granger is.

Granger says he was spying for Sir Ian because he promised him the pilot spot on his mission. Kate says he was in the access way and his DNA shows it. She says they found the murder weapon there. He says he never went inside the simulation and only wore the gas mask as a precaution. He says the tunnel was a drop point. He says he made a deal with Mikhail to get him plans. Granger says Mikhail cloned his tracker before it was embedded so he could sneak out whenever he wanted.

Mikhail is outside working when Espo asks to talk to him. He says it’s about his business relationship with Granger. Mikhail goes running and Espo chases him then kicks him down and asks where he’s running to on Mars. Mikhail says it’s good to be out even though he’s at the police station. He admits he was trading information to make money for his family since he wouldn’t be back once he left for Mars. He says Tom was a jackass that no one liked. He says no one is sad he’s dead.

Kate says he’s the only one unaccounted for during his murder. Mikhail says he can prove where he was. He says he was taking photos to give to Granger and they are all time stamped. Espo clarifies that his alibi is that he was busy spying when Tom died. Ryan says Mikhail was telling the truth. You can even see him reflected in a screen surface. Castle says to go back to a photo. He sees the rover and it wasn’t docked.

The rover is holding the murder weapon. Castle says the rover did it! Viggo says the rover was docked then Kate asks who controls the rover. He says no one has access and says it was designed to interface solely with Mira. He says the astronauts tell Mira what to do and she does it. Castle asks if someone could have told Mira to kill Tom. Viggo, Kate and Castle head into the simulation to talk to Mira in secret. They head into a super secure area and he cuts off communication from the others.

Mira asks why Viggo is on Mars. Kate says she doesn’t want to interrogate a computer. Mira insists the rover was docked. Kate asks if someone instructed her to activate the rover. Mira insists her memory is perfect. Viggo says something is off. Mira insists they don’t need to run a diagnostic then refuses to do it. She says it violates her operational security. She says she can’t compromise the mission. Kate says Mira knows she’s lying to them and that if they find out the mission will be compromised.

Castle asks what if someone is a threat to the mission. Castle asks if Tom was a threat to the mission. Mira says yes. Viggo asks who told her Tom was a threat. She says she’s not authorized to give him that information. Viggo says they can reboot her. He says all recorded memory will stay intact. They start to take on gas and the door closes. Viggo says they have to get out. The door is locked. Castle says to open the pod bay door (just like in 2001).

Castle, Kate and Viggo are choking when she reminds they’re not on Mars. She calls Espo on her cell phone. Castle says Kubrick was right, AI is a bad idea. Ed says it wasn’t Mira. There was a sub-routine installed and now all her memory was erased. Kate says the killer wanted to make sure they killed the only witness – Mira. Viggo says it must be one of the astronauts. Castle says there’s only one explanation that makes sense.

They pull in the rest of the crew. Castle says the killer knew Mikhail was selling secrets so that made him the perfect patsy. He says Mikhail went to life support and captured a photo. Kate says Kim sent Mikhail out and asks why she didn’t send Angela with her per protocol. Kim says she never left the module. Haroun and Angela were outside when the cameras were down and could have hidden the murder weapon.

Kate says the three of them worked together to deal with Tom who was a threat then they alibied each other. Castle says they decided to put their shot at immortality on Mars ahead of Tom’s life. Angela says with Mira’s memory gone, there is no proof. Kate says there’s a black box that records Mira’s memories in case of emergency. Kate says the first one to cooperate will get the best deal. It’s a ruse, but they cave. Kate asks Castle if he still wants to go to Mars but he says he’ll wait til they have first class service.

Kate says when people are stuck together in a small space for a long time, you lose perspective. Martha says she came without Alexis to the family meeting. Martha says it’s frenetic. She says she decided to move out on her own. Castle says he didn’t intend her to move out but she says it’s about her, not him and says it’s an evolution. She says there will be more little Castles around and they need room to themselves. Martha leaves and they both agree it’s really quiet and they should go out to a nice loud restaurant with lots of people.

THE END!
