Celine Dion took to the stage again in Vegas recently and revealed to the crowd that her husband Rene Angelil is at death’s door and has just a few weeks to live, according to the National Enquirer. Dion also said that she only agreed to perform because Rene insisted she get back on the stage and do what she loves. The two have been together, in one way or another, for 35 years – since Celine Dion was just 12 and the then then married Rene was her manager.
Reportedly, he’s the only man she’s ever been with and both insist that they waited until she was of age before they became romantic. At this late stage, whether that’s accurate or not doesn’t matter. Celine is still committed to her much older husband (now 77). Rene was first diagnosed with cancer a little more than 15 years ago and treatment seemed to go well but then, two years ago, his throat cancer came back with a vengeance and has now spread and will claim Rene Angelil’s life very soon.
Celine walked away from a big-money Vegas residency at Caesars Palace after Rene fell ill again and has been taking care of him. The plan is for her to stay by his side as much as possible in his final weeks as they plan for him to die in her arms, with their three sons by his side. They have sons Rene-Charles (14) and twins Nelson and Eddy (4). Celine has assured Rene that she will be able to care for their sons alone and that he has no worries about them.
Sources close to Celine Dion told the Enquirer that when her three sons see how bad off their father is “it scares them.” She says Rene can now barely sit up and says she feeds her husband through a tube because he can no longer swallow as a result of the extensive throat surgery. He also has lost the ability to speak but can still communicate in other ways. Rene recently convinced Celine to go back to work and she started a 40 show run that will last from August 27th through January 2016.
With that light a run, that means a couple of performances a week and plenty of time to be with Rene Angelil when he passes and with her kids as they all grieve afterward. Celine also says the kids help out care taking of their father and she’s kept them very involved and informed about his cancer so they know what’s going on even though they’re worried. She says they help feed and comfort their father and realize that he will be passing very soon.
In another recent interview with People, Celine said, “I’m scared of losing him because it’s bad. But I have to show myself, my husband and my kids that I’m strong and that we’re okay. He wants me to sing again, and I want to do this with him.” She dedicated the opening night of her show to her husband and performed tribute numbers to Rene including The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and other heart-wrenching numbers.
With the schedule for her new Vegas show established and Rene Angelil on such a short time line for passing, it looks like they will still be in her newest residency in Las Vegas if Celine Dion’s husband finally loses his battle with cancer. But as Celine says in song and when speaking about her husband, “my heart will go on…”
