Tonight on Lifetime Abby Lee Miller’s Dance Moms continues with an all new Tuesday April 21, season 5 episode 16 called, “Video Killed the ALDC Star” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, it’s the ALDC’s last competition in LA and JoJo and Kendall have challenging solos. To add to the pressure, Nia and Kendall are both shooting their music videos this week.
On the last episode, determined to have a victory in their first week back in LA, the ALDC faced the Murrieta Dance Project again, the team that won with a perfect score and sent Abby in a downward spiral of negativity. Putting her best foot forward, Abby gave solos to her two strongest dancers, Maddie and Kalani. Kalani were hungry for a win and was feeling the pressure to beat not only Maddie but MDP as well. Sparks flew between Jill and Holly when Nia was left out of a show biz opportunity which put a strain on the team as they tried to master an edgy rose garden themed contemporary routine. Did you watch the episode? If you missed it, we have a full and detailed recap right here for you.

#DanceMoms is in LA for one more week and will face a competition judged by kids. At Kendall’s music video shoot, Abby is overseeing the military-inspired shoot. Abby says – take that Holly and says Holly has made her bed and had to lie in it. She tells Jill that Holly didn’t even have the decency to let her know that she was working with outside people. Jill says Nia could have had all of Abby’s attention but Holly turned to Aubrey O’Day and went behind Abby’s back.
Jill says that was Holly’s choice. Abby torments some of the extras. She is thrilled with the video shoot and Jill says it went well and she hopes Holly doesn’t get all competitive and crazy since they do have a dance competition this week. Back at the studio, Abby says it’s the last week in LA for now and says pyramid is different. She has JoJo and Mackenzie on the bottom and says they need to do more. Then she has Nia and Kalani. She says great work in the group and they stood out.
On the top is Kendall who had her big video shoot and Abby says it was awesome and she has elevated herself up like Maddie and Mackenzie. Mackenzie is also at the top for winning the big awards at the last competition and she announces that she’s performing at the Grammys. Maddie says Sia is like family now and she hopes to keep working with her. Abby gives Kendall a high energy jazz number and also gives a solo to JoJo – it’s called Straighten Up.
Abby she asks if she can guess what she’s going to wear. JoJo guesses a strait jacket. The group routine is called Platinum and she says maybe Kendall’s song will go platinum. Holly is stewing that Abby isn’t supporting Nia also. She says Mackenzie won’t be in group this week since she’s not feeling well. Abby says the competition is strange this week since the judges are kids and kids can be cruel. The moms step out. Abby asks the girls how many records you have to sell to go platinum.
Abby says it’s one million and says it’s a big deal. Jill says she’s Abby’s new BFF and Holly makes a crack about her squeezing Abby’s pimples (gross). Jill says the video shoot was fun and she’s excited for Nia’s video shoot. Holly says she has no clue what the stylist is doing. She says Nia has a fitting after rehearsal. Holly says Katy Perry’s hair guy is doing Nia’s hair. Jill says Holly keeps dropping all these names and says Abby doesn’t have those names and she’s shoving it in Jill’s face.
In group rehearsal, Abby yells at the girls about their faces not changing and says they need to be regal and show power. Abby says she was saving this routine and didn’t know that kids would be judging them. She sends them out to give drinks. Nia asks Abby if she can come to her video and Abby says Nia should have wanted her at the meeting and the recording of the song. She says she flushed Abby being her manager away. Nia says she doesn’t think that’s what happened.
Nia says it’s a difference of opinion and Abby says she sold out. Nia says she doesn’t think that and that no one else thinks it either. Abby says all the other girls think that. Holly says Abby is worried that Nia’s video will be better than Kendall’s and is trying to make Nia feel bad. Holly storms out and asks Nia if she wants her to talk to Abby. Nia says no and says she just agrees to disagree with Abby on this. Holly says Nia is handling this well.
Abby now works with Kendall on her solo. It’s her doing a drum major kind of number. Jill says Abby has high expectations and is pushing Kendall hard. Jill says Kendall has to step it up and do what Abby wants. Abby tells Kendall she has to win. Now it’s over to Nia’s video shoot. Holly is thrilled to see Nia’s name in lights. Janet Jackson’s makeup artist is there and they have the famous Kiss boys there too. Nia looks totally different. Mikey Menden is directing.
He tells her to be sure to send stuff out on social media. Aubrey O’Day shows up at the video shoot with flowers. Nia says she loves how supportive Aubrey is. Holly tells Aubrey this whole experience has been invaluable. Aubrey asks what’s going on and Holly says Abby has been nasty and focused on Kendall’s video. Aubrey says she can’t stand Abby now that she’s seen her true colors and is ready to check Abby with this. Holly says Abby is going to make enemies if she keeps on like this.
Melissa shows Abby the social media pics that Holly is posting. Abby looks at it and says to change Nia’s persona so much for what other people are telling her to do is exactly what the moms need to watch out for. She says Nia is linked to ALDC and she doesn’t approve of some of what she’s seeing. She says she guesses she’s not Nia’s manager anymore. Mikey tells Nia to really release herself as an artist. Nia looks like a mini-Holly when they get down with her.
Holly says the music video has to be successful since this has cost her the relationship with Abby. The video is very sexy and grown up and quite different from how Kendall’s looked which was very G. This is more PG-13. Mikey tells Holly she’s raised a star. Holly says finally others are seeing the talent that she sees in Nia. Abby puts JoJo in a strait jacket for her solo. She tells her to be dangerous. Abby says JoJo needs to straighten up so this is about reining her in and working on her technique.
Abby tells her to quit being lazy or she’ll give the solo to Kalani. Jessalynn says this is a hard routine since she’s having to dance without her arms. Melissa says Abby is watching social media and is taking it out on their kids. Melissa says Abby is mad and says the stress between the two music videos is putting her in a mood. She says it’s Abby versus Holly. Jill checks Holly’s social media and shows Melissa the posts.
One says Aubrey is on set and killing any other video from Abby. Jill is annoyed that Holly let Aubrey post something against Kendall. Jessa says she should battle her and Kira says Holly always talks bad about what Abby does but Holly is acting worse than Abby. Jill says they have a vendetta against Kendall because of the video. The group goes to see Abby’s new studio. Abby says she’s taking the girls in first and the girls brought their trophies they just won in LA. She shows them how it’s going to look.
She tells the girls to give her some ideas on paint colors. Melissa asks Holly if she saw what Aubrey posted that was negative about other ALDC videos. Holly says that’s Aubrey, not her. Holly says the other moms are being jealous and says there was none of this vibe on Kendall’s video. Jill says Holly was trying to upset Kendall. Holly says it’s Nia’s turn and says Aubrey has seen how Nia was hurt by Abby. Jill says Holly is throwing this in their faces.
Holly says she has celebrated all of their children’s success. Abby says the silver underwear in high heels was too much for her and Holly reminds Abby that Maddie was in a nude body suit. Jill tells Holly that her people made it into a competition. Holly gets upset and goes to her car to cry. She says Nia has worked so hard and this video was so amazing for Nia. She says she thought they were her friends but they don’t care and can’t share in Nia’s success.
At the competition, Jill wonders where Abby is. Holly gets a call from Aubrey and steps out to take the call. She says Nia is feeling good about the shoot but says it’s been tough with the competition team and says people were saying Holly was posting too much and was bragging. Aubrey says that’s what haters do and says it sounds like she’s around a lot of jealous people. She says that means she’s doing something right and tells Holly not to let them steal her joy. Holly thanks her.
Abby shows up to check on the girls and says it’s their last week in LA and it’s so important. She tells JoJo it’s a tough number and is about more than her darling face and is all about technique. She tells Kendall that her dancing put her on the map and now she’s a recording artist. She tells them to remember that it’s kids judging them. The moms go with Abby and take their seats. JoJo is up first and Jessa is worried about what a challenge this is.
Her makeup is all creepy but the judges seem captivated. She gets her arms loose and then the number opens up more. She looks so different like this – cute JoJo with the bow is gone and she looks like a more mature performer. The crowd cheers once it’s done. JoJo is thrilled with how she did. Kalani gives her a big hug. Kendall is up next with her drum major routine. Jill is worried that Kendall is stressed about being caught between Holly and Abby.
Kendall says Abby is making it a competition between she and Holly and it’s stressful. Kendall started off strong but Abby says she kind off flopped toward the middle. Kendall comes off stage crying to Maddie and says she forgot part of her choreography and is worried Abby will be and that she totally blew it. Offstage, Abby tells her if she cries, she’s going to do 1,000 push ups. Abby tells her to suck it up and Kendall walks off.
Abby says she knows that Kendall is mad at herself but says she has to keep it together and can’t let people see her like that. She says she needs to get her head in the game for the group number. Mackenzie says she wants to be in the dance and Melissa says she has to rest since she’s sick. Abby says this is their final performance in LA and they need to do well so they can come back again. The girls do their group number and it’s really cool.
Abby wonders what the kid judges know about judging and says it’s nerve wracking for their fate to lie in the hands of kids. It’s awards time. Kendall takes 5th place in her age group solo and Jill says that’s not good enough for her or Abby and says it may end the favoritism. JoJo didn’t place at all and Jessa says JoJo danced really well today and says the kids that are judging don’t know talent when they see it. Next is group awards and ALDC takes 1st place.
Abby says they did it and got enough points to win. JoJo is upset but Jessa says that she did well. JoJo is worried that Abby will be upset at her and says she let Gia and Abby down. Abby comes into the room and says the group won and that was great. She says the solos didn’t top out. She says she expected more. Abby tells JoJo she thought her routine was great and she did a great job. Abby tells Kendall that she’s an open book and lets people see her emotions and can’t do it.
Abby says she’s the same way. She tells Kendall that being a favorite of hers brings responsibility and pressure. She says she’ll see them back in Pittsburgh and that’s it!
