Tonight on FOX Empire premieres with an all new Wednesday September 23, season 2 premiere called, “The Devils Are Here,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, season 2 picks up three months after the arrest and incarceration of Lucious, (Terrence Howard) who is trying to run Empire Entertainment from inside federal lockup.
On the last episode, Jamal and Lucious were on their way to forming a music-centered relationship, but once again, Lucious had a secret that’s about to change everything. Hakeem decided to flirt with the enemy, while trying to figure out what the best move is for his career. Meanwhile, Cookie was cooking up a plan of her own. Did you watch the last episode? On tonight’s episode as per the FOX synopsis, “season 2 picks up three months after the arrest and incarceration of Lucious, who is trying to run Empire Entertainment from inside federal lockup. Elsewhere, a headline-grabbing state prosecutor hangs her political ambitions on bringing Lucious down; and Cookie stages a star-studded concert in support of her ex, while at the same time she’s plotting with Andre, Hakeem, Anika and Mimi Whiteman to finalize the hostile takeover of his company.”

#Empire picks up three months after last season ended. There’s a #FreeLucious rally and concert at the park. They talk about the black men in the prison that shouldn’t be. Hakeem isn’t happy to be at this rally when his dad is guilty. He says Jamal will not like the hostile take-over but Cookie says he’ll have to understand and says he needs to impress the lady investor. Jamal tells Cookie at the stage side that Bill Clinton is there. He says he feels bad for thinking she’d sell his dad out.
He says she should go visit dad and she reminds him they didn’t visit her. Cookie is lowered onto the stage in a gorilla costume inside a cage and there are cheers as she reveals herself. She asks how much longer are they going to treat us like animals. She says our fathers, brothers, husbands and sons are victims of the system. She says justice for all and gets the crowd to chant – how much longer? She stirs them up like crazy.
The rally is all about hands up. Al Sharpton is there and Cookie asks him to help but he says word on the street is that Lucious is in deep and he can’t help. Jamal comes on stage and the women go wild. Cookie watches off stage as her son sings about injustice. We see Lucious at the jail and the concert is playing. He smiles as he sees Jamal singing. A guy runs up to Lucious – it’s Cookie’s cousin. He says Frank Gathers is being transferred and Lucious says it’s his problem because of being involved with Cookie.
Lucious watches Hakeem sing with his brother and he sings about his dad being innocent. Cookie meets with Mimi Whiteman and Tricky. She takes them to the stage to see their future investments. Mimi says Lucious is the reason she’s there and Cookie says he’s not the only reason then she looks Cookie up and down and makes a sexy remark. Lucious sees them talking and is not pleased. Later, he plays hoops with some guys. Another guy points out that Frank Gathers is being unloaded from the transfer bus.
OMG – it’s Chris Rock!! Lucious is worried – Frank was the guy that Lucious dealt drugs with back in the day. Frank walks down the corridor and people clear out. Lucious walks up on him and Frank says it seems like yesterday and tells some others he and Cookie used to work for him. They high five and hug it out. Frank asks about Cookie and Lucious says he hasn’t talked to her. Frank says the two of them are inspirational figures. Lucious says he inspires fear and tells him to stay cool.
Cookie comes in to Empire and Hakeem chases her away from some donuts. She says she’s checking on Tiana then will come to his rehearsal. Jamal tells Becky that he needs to cover for her but she says Marco will be furious since they were trying to sign Derek for months. Hakeem starts an argument with Jamal and says he’s going to tell mom. Andre grabs Jamal about his schedule and he says he just wants to be in the studio. Jamal gets snippy with his young male assistant.
Jamal goes to see Lucious in jail and says Empire is taking all his time and he can’t tour or get in the studio. Lucious says to get him out and Jamal can do what he wants. Lucious says that lying snake Bernie needs to be handled. Jamal says not yet. He asks how Andre is doing with Apex Radio and Lucious says he needs to close the deal. Jamal says Hakeem is pissed about the artwork and hasn’t recorded his new single. Lucious says Cookie can’t manage Hakeem then says his mom hasn’t come to see him once.
Lucious says he gets it’s payback when Jamal doesn’t offer sympathy. He asks Jamal who was the ledbian bitch with his mom at the concert and Jamal says he doesn’t know. Lucious tells him to find out and says she and Cookie are up to something. Andre wakes from a bad dream and says – they know. She says if they were suspects, they would already have been brought in. She says if they don’t find any evidence, Lucious’ case will be thrown out. Rhonda says Mimi will bite and it will be all good.
She asks if he told his pastor about Vernon. Rhonda tells him he needs to relax and says the company will be his, not Cookie and Hakeem’s. He says he can’t believe Lucious gave it to Jamal. He asks about the baby and she rubs her tummy. Frank comes to sit by Cookie’s cousin Jamel and he says he didn’t do it. Frank says he knows he killed his boy Teddy too. Jamel says no and he says he wouldn’t do that. Frank looks askance then says he’s hungry. He asks if Jamel is hungry.
Mimi and Cookie are at a party they’re throwing for Mimi. Anika comes over and talks her up and Cookie is not happy to see her. Andre asks her to play along. Hakeem talks to Mimi and flirts. They have lots of sexy, scantily clad ladies and they’re kissing on each other as eye candy to Mimi. Mimi asks why she wants to depose Lucious. Cookie says he lost his way and is going to destroy the company and she wants to save it for her sons.
Mimi has her eye on both Cookie and Anika. Jamal tells his BF to send the chef Ricardo out. He tells Jamal he’s being nasty. Jamal kisses his BF roughly then asks if he likes the new place. He tells Jamal he’s blowing up on the charts. Jamal tells him that he turns him on and says the LGBT party is good for Michael. They talk about Brian being a ho and that Jamal made a mistake and asks if Michael still wants him. He does.
A woman comes over to flirt with Mimi and she tells her she’s trying to hard and tells her to move. She asks Anika to dance and calls her Anita. She tries to say no but Cookie tells her to go dance and take off her sweater so she can see her sexy body. Anika twerks for her.
Jamel calls Cookie to warn her she’s in danger from Frank and says he needs her to get Lucious to protect him. Hakeem shows up annoyed that Jamal called him from a meeting. Carol asks if Cookie got the flowers and says it’s that crazy guy. Porsha says she has to go pee and ends the call while Carol desperately tries to warn her. Cookie tells Hakeem that they got the investment money and he needs to be in a good place with Jamal when they take the company.
The new prosecutor, Rozanne, comes to see Lucious and she says she saw an old friend of his. He says this meeting is illegal. She says Vernon says Bunkie’s murder has to do with more than they thought. She asks him to help solve some other murders and he can get a plea. He calls her a black bitch in cheap shoes trying to take down hip hop. He says she will never be anything more and she says she’ll jam her shoes up his ass. He says he’d pay good money. She tells him the shoes are Tom Ford and walks out.
Frank has visitors and one of his daughters raps for him. Lucious walks over and adds to her rhyme. Lucious tells her she’s powerful and then he hears he has another visitor. Michael is at Jamal’s office with the LGBT people. Jamal goes in and hears them singing. He is getting an award but declines to do a duet. Andre comes and tells Hakeem it’s time. Cookie moves in lockstep with Anika, Andre and Hakeem. They head into a board meeting.
Hakeem says they’re taking over. Cookie tells the board and says they have a controlling interest in Empire and are taking it from Lucious. Hakeem says it’s just business. Mimi is already there and Andre is upset. Mimi says she met with Lucious this morning and made a better deal. Cookie tells Anika she told her to sleep with Mimi and Anika says she did. Cookie tells Anika she can’t even “dyke right.” Jamal turns on the screen and they see Lucious from his cell. He says – game over bitches.
Jamel watches Frank eat through his black eye. He tells Frank to stop. Frank says to tell him what he needs to know. Jamel says it was Cookie and Frank says she’s no snitch and he better do better than that. Jamel insists it was Cookie. Frank thinks about it and decides it’s possible. He says – that bitch. Cookie tells Jamal she was trying to protect him with the move but he says it’s backstabbing. He says at least when Lucious threw him in the trash, he did it to his face.
Cookie says her sacrifice started this company and Jamal says he’s tired of hearing it. She says he’s turning into his daddy and she’s watching it happen. Cookie goes home and sees a present in front of her door. She asks Carol how she got into her house and why she’s playing with her wigs. Carol says she tried to tell her assistant the roses are really from Frank. Cookie looks at the box and Carol sends the girls into the other room. Cookie opens the box and sees a head in it. Cookie curses no.
Michael tells Jamal he’s sorry about Miss Lawrence and says he knows he’s not comfortable around flamboyant dudes. Jamal asks what he can do and offers $50k. Michael says canceling at the last minute doesn’t mean he can buy him. Jamal tells him to apologize for him and Michael calls him shady but is flirty when he says it. Jamal is in the studio. Becky is with him. The producer gets a call and cuts off the music. He says Cookie is on the phone but Jamal doesn’t want to take it. Becky makes him.
Cookie says to stop what he’s doing and go to his father’s house so he will be safe. She says this is very real and he sees she’s sent security there. Carol cries and Cookie says to quit crying like Tammy Faye Baker and get the kids and go to Lucious’ house. Cookie heads to the jail to see her ex. He sits and says she looks like Mr T with all her gold. She says she didn’t come all this way to play games with him. Lucious says he still loves her and is sorry he didn’t come visit her and says this place is hell.
She says he’s been there three months and talk to her after five years. He says he’s sorry it didn’t work out with Mimi and she says she did it for their sons. She says it’s tearing the boys apart. He gets flirty and she says to save it for Anika or whatever boys in there he’s diddling. Lucious says he loves and hates her then asks why she came. Cookie says they’re messing with them and says it’s Frank. She says she needs him to fix it. He asks what Frank did.
Lucious goes to sit with Frank. He tells him if there’s a problem between them, they can work it out. The family is all holed up at Lucious’ and Rhonda is annoyed by the kids and asks what this is all about. Carol says there’s a guy they used to run drugs for back in the day and he was really dangerous. Lucious says he thinks Frank’s daughter could be part of Empire. Frank says throwing his daughter a bone won’t fix this and says Cookie ratted him to the feds. He says this is between he and Cookie, not Lucious.
He tells Lucious they’re cool unless he says something different. Lucious says it’s good and Frank says he’s always liked that Lucious is cold-blooded. Lucious says war with Cookie means war with him. Frank says he’s crazier than he thought. He tells his guys to kill him, fast and quiet. He tells Lucious bye then walks off. Lucious says he’s confused and tells him to sit. Frank’s guys step up for Lucious as Lucious says Frank wanted to rule the streets but he wanted to rule the world.
Lucious explains he paid off Mike’s mortgage, is taking care of Bam Bam’s sick kid and says Guy just likes the music. Lucious stands and says kill him and make it loud and long. He tells Frank he’s going to sign his baby girl then sleep with her. Lucious walks away as Frank screams as the men kill him. Jamal tells Hakeem he’s going to bury his album and it won’t see the light of day. Hakeem says he knows his album will outsell his so he’s killing it.
Jamal says it’s because he betrayed him. Cookie comes back and says it’s all over. Rhonda asks what’s going on and Cookie says an old beef with a very dangerous man. Hakeem asks if Lucious took care of it from prison. She says he’s still their dad and she’s still their mom and to never forget it. Jamal smiles and tells her to get out. He kicks them all out. He says to get out of his father’s house now and says they all betrayed him. Rhonda says no problem. Hakeem says it’s not even his house.
Cookie tells Jamal she can fix this and they can be a family again. He tells her to get out and she slaps his face and asks who he thinks he’s talking to. He glares and she slaps him again. He asks – are you done now lady? He backs her out of the house and closes it in her face then breaks down crying for a moment then stomps into the house.
