RECAP:

#FearTWD begins with utter darkness in LA. A bright moon hangs in the sky. We see fires burning in one sector. There are emergency lights on at the arena doors. Infected push against the doors, straining the chains that hold them within – thousands of them. Madison is packing and they tell Chris and Alicia to get their stuff now. Alicia and Chris tell them they saw the guards looting and they tell the kids they’re going to get Liza and Nick then drive East. Chris asks how and Travis says he doesn’t know how.

Daniel tells the others that they can’t let Andrew loose even though he gave them information. He says they don’t know where to go once they’re in the compound to find their families. He says it’s like a maze then says he can draw a map. Travis says they’re going to bring the kid. Maddy says to put the kid in his truck and he asks if she’s ashamed of what she and Daniel did. She says if Chris was at risk, he would have done anything too. Daniel comes to see Ofelia and says they’re going to get her mother.

He says he needs her help. Ofelia asks about Andy and her dad says they’ll bring him along. She says he’s always lied to her and he says he protected her. She asks if Griselda knows the truth about him. Daniel stays silent. Ofelia says she always thought he was the victim. He asks if she’d rather that be true. He touches her arm and speaks to her but she is angry at her father. Maddy looks at the marks on the wall where she marked the kids heights as they grew. They head out.

She tells Alicia to get into the car so they can leave. Ofelia comes out and then they hear a dog bark. It comes down the street and then Ofelia says the neighbors didn’t help when they came to take their people. Exner radios about the evacuation and says they’re going mobile and moving to Edwards. Liza asks about her family and says her son needs his father. Exner says she has too many people – her son, the ex, then his family. Exner says she can have just her son and Liza asks for Travis too. She nods.

Andrew tells Travis that Daniel will kill him later then says Madison let him do it. Andrew says he was kind to Ofelia and didn’t take their family. Andrew says he’ll tell only Travis what he needs to know and says they’re only keeping him to kill him. He begs him to cut him loose and says there’s no version of this that doesn’t end with him dead because Daniel is one who tortured then killed people, he didn’t release them. They load up and head out.

Maddy has Alicia and Chris with her. They see families sitting by candlelight at their tables. They leave without warning them. They arrive at the gates and see dead soldiers but none moving around. Chris says they just abandoned them. Daniel goes to switch the controls that opened the gate. The cards pull forward and Maddy gives Daniel a look. Looks like Travis let Andrew go. They don’t close the gates behind them. Daniel approaches the guards at the gate of the facility.

He tells them to save their ammo – he opened the arena doors and let the infected loose. They come at the gate and the soldiers all open fire. But there are too many, they just keep coming – thousands and thousands. Daniel tells the others the infected are at the North gate and they can go now. Daniel asks Travis what he did. He says Andrew told them where to find their people. Daniel says he’ll regret this. Travis leaves Chris the car keys and says to drive them to the campground if they don’t come back.

He says he can’t drive and Maddy says Alicia can. They leave Alicia and Chris waiting with the cars and head inside. Strand and Nick talk and Strand tells him not to call attention to them. He asks where Nick lived and he says close by. Strand says that community predates the city and is blue collar, diverse and vibrant. He says he would gentrify the shit out of it in another world. The lights start to go out and Strand says it’s time to go. Strand checks his pockets and then Nick shows him he has the key.

Exner watches a chopper leave and then steps outside to look around. She and Liza see the carnage and Exner curses. She says evac must know the compound is compromised. Alarms are blaring as the gang sneaks into the compound. They see infected swarming another gate. They cut a lock to get inside at a clear entrance. Exner radios for help and says they’re ready to go – she says it’s secure and the infected are outside. She says they can extract them but the evac team says they’re assessing. They fly away.

Exner tells everyone to go and Liza asks what about the patients. Exner says she’ll take care of them then tells Liza she’s sorry about Chris. The choppers all turn back and Exner tells Liza to run. Exner starts switching off monitoring equipment. Chris and Alicia wait and worry. He gets out of the car and Alicia sys they’ll come back. She gets out too. She says they’ll come back if they can’t get in. Chris says he doesn’t want anyone to die. They hear a gunshot and snarls.

Alicia tells Chris they can’t save everyone. She says it’s the truth and he says shut up. He says to get into the car. They go. They see shadows approaching. Strand and Nick are out and others beg them to let them out. Nick asks why he won’t help them and Strand says helping them would hurt them and there’s no value add. Nick asks where they’re going and Strand says they need a ride then Abigail. Nick asks what that is. Chris and Alicia hide and wait to see if it’s infected coming or soldiers.

Someone tries the door of their SUV then breaks the window. It’s two soldiers who drag them out. He asks why they didn’t just open the door and demands the keys. Chris says they’re not going anywhere. Alicia says she has the keys then hands them over. One of the soldiers manhandles her and Chris fights back and they punch him and knock him out. Alicia is scared and angry. Daniel and the gang enter a checkpoint area. He says Andrew told them it would be there and to go towards administration.

The soldiers fire into the crowd of infected at the fence trying to back them off. Liza scans her card and runs outside. The infected break through the chain link fence. Liza considers running back inside and sees soldiers being attacked. She sees a wounded man rejected by a chopper then he ran into the blade to kill himself. The fence and guard tower topple. It’s getting much worse very fast. Liza runs back for the compound. Strand and Nick are in the halls and duck out of the way of soldiers.

Once they pass, Strand and Nick creep on down the hall. They close a door behind them and move on. They see one of the infected feeding and Strand gestures him to be quiet. Strand says they’re slow so it’s all right. He creeps to a soldier and picks up a flashlight then sees more at the doors. The soldier the infected is eating is still twitching. The man whispers please. It’s the guy who has Strand’s watch and cufflinks. He takes back the cufflinks and tells him to keep the watch.

The guy says kill me but Strand tells him he’s on his way. More infected come in and Strand and Nick head back out the other way. Travis and the gang find the warehouse of caged people and start looking for Nick and Griselda. Those still locked up tell them they’ll tell them where they went if she’ll cut them loose. They cut some people loose then head off the way they were told. Strand and Nick are running from infected and hit a locked door. Strand says that’s unfortunate. They try other doors.

Liza runs another way trying to figure out what to do. Strand starts shooting the infected. Nick sees his mom and Travis and bangs on the door. They can see the infected coming for Nick. Maddy beats at the door. They try to get it open. Liza is there and uses her key card to open the door and they get them out just before the infected reach them. They all creep downstairs together and come out in the kitchen. An infected comes out at Liza then others are there. They all fight them off together.

More keep coming. They keep moving. They tell them Chris and Alicia are safe. Strand blocks the door and Nick tells his mom the guy’s name and that he saved his life. Daniel asks Liza about Griselda. She tells him she’s sorry. Ofelia asks where she is and Liza says the infection took her. Ofelia demands to see her and Liza says there’s nothing left to see and she’s sorry. Liza leads them through the medical area where they see dead bodies with their brains plugged by the cattle killer. Exner killed them all.

Exner finishes her grim work as they show up. Maddy starts grabbing medications. Liza tells Exner they need a way out and she says she should have gone when she told her. She tells them to try to get out through the ICU in a sub-level but she says there’s nowhere to go. Liza asks her to come with them and says there’s people she can still help. Maddy tells Liza the woman is lost and to come with them. They head out and leave the doctor behind.

Strand asks what their plan is and they tell him East and the desert. He says it’s not safe that way and says he has a home on the water towards the West and supplies. They creep out the doors and into the rising sun. It’s a mess outside. Ashes smolder – it’s where they were burning the corpses of the infected. Daniel and Ofelia stare in horror. Ofelia breaks down and then the shot pans out and we see huge piles of ash. They’ve been burning bodies a while. They make it to the garage.

Daniel tells Travis and Maddy to be quiet before they alert the dead. Chris says soldiers took the SUV. Ofelia slumps to the ground. Daniel says they have to go. Andrew is there and has a gun on Daniel. Ofelia calls his name. She tells him to put the gun down. She asks him to please not do this. Andy shoots Ofelia instead of Daniel and Travis tackles the kid and beats him brutally. Maddy tries to get him to stop. She says to leave him. He’s beat him most of the way to death.

They go back to check on Ofelia whom Liza was helping. They drive down the freeway with Liza and Daniel with the injured Ofelia in the back. Some infected stagger on the roadways. Strand tells them to avoid the freeways. She asks if he wants to go back and he laughs, calls her funny then says they’ll get along fine. He directs her down some surface streets then through a huge culvert. The freeways are a mass of cars. The culvert is clear except for a downed chopper and a bit of other debris.

They make it to Strand’s place and he keys open the lock. He lets them in the gate and says he has generators powering the locks. They all get out. Looks like Ofelia was just show in the arm. They head for his front door. Inside, it’s a posh place and he tells them to help themselves to food. They go into the kitchen. The view is amazing – the ocean is blue and peaceful. Daniel sits Ofelia on the sofa and Nick goes outside. Maddy joins him. She tells him she’s sorry and he asks for what.

Maddy says she let them take him and Nick scoffs and pats her arm. He says he feels strange – she says they don’t know where they’re going and he says he never knew where he was going so it’s like he’s been living like this for a long time and now everyone is catching up with him. He says it’s strange. Liza gives Daniel instructions on how to care for Ofelia’s wound. Chris asks his mom how she is and Liza says Ofelia is fine. Nick goes looking for Strand. He finds him packing.

Strand says he’s going to stay in constant motion. Nick asks if they can stay there but Strand says no, no one stays. Travis follows Maddy out into the yard to the shore. Nick asks why they came here if they can’t stay and Strand says the only way to survive in a mad world is to embrace the madness. He tells Nick to come see. He has a telescope aimed at the sea and gestures for Nick to look. He sees a yacht and Strand says that’s Abigail.

Liza heads down to the shore with Maddy close behind her. She calls out to Liza and asks what’s wrong. Liza shows her the scratch she got from an infected. Maddy is stunned. Liza says she didn’t notice until they were clear. She tells Maddy nothing can be done and shows she has the gun. Maddy says no. Liza says she doesn’t think she can do it even though she knows she has to. Maddy says not to ask her to do it but Liza reminds her Maddy asked her to. Liza says not to make Travis do it.

She says it will break him. Maddy says they don’t know but Liza says she does and hands her the gun. Travis comes up and asks what’s going on. He sees Maddy has the gun and Maddy says Liza is infected. He says it’s okay and says they have medication. Liza says it doesn’t work and can’t be treated. She tells Travis to tell Chris that she did it. Travis says he’s not letting her do this but Travis says the infection kills you like anything else then you come back. She says it doesn’t matter how you die, you come back.

Liza says she won’t let that happen to her. She says Chris has to be protected from this and tells him to promise her. Travis cries with her and he promises to protect their son. Travis holds out his hand for the gun and Maddy gives it to him. Chris and Alicia are eating popsicles when they hear the shot. Daniel is shocked. Ofelia is sleeping. Strand and Nick are still at the telescope. Alicia and Chris come running towards the sound. Travis is broken from it, just like the women thought he would be.

He sinks his hands in the sand and cries. Chris cries as he sits by his mother’s body. Alicia stands and soaks in the sun. Maddy comforts him. She holds him as he cries. That’s the end of season one. Looks like these people survived but they let loose tens of thousands of zombies and may have helped spawn the true breadth of the apocalypse. We see a reef of seaweed or something in the ocean, then nothing. Fear not, #FTWD was renewed for season two.
