Fifty Shades of Grey Film Gets ‘R’ Rating: “Unusual Behavior, Strong Sexual Content, Graphic Nudity”

Sorry to any fans of Fifty Shades of Grey that are under 17 years of age, because you’ve just been cock-blocked. Fifty Shades of Grey has failed to earn the coveted [by studios, anyway] PG-13 rating, and has instead garnered the long-expected ‘R’ rating. Why? Well, the official MPAA reasons are, “strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language.”

Um… unusual behavior? Really? Does BDSM count as ‘unusual behavior’? Or is the MPAA referring to something else? To be fair, there is a lot ‘unusual’ behavior in Fifty Shades of Grey, but that’s coming from someone who cringed her way through the books. Seriously, I had one eye closed and one eye open, that’s how painful it was. But since there are numerous fans of the book that are still salivating for the movie’s release, I’m guessing this ‘unusual behavior’ only comes as good news. As in, yes, there is a lot of sexy times, and a lot of naked times. Unfortunately, we will not get to see Jamie Dornan’s full frontal anything, because he reportedly signed a contract that allowed him to keep his schlong private. Dakota Fanning wasn’t given the same courtesy, but the argument against sexism is a fight for another time.

The ‘R’ rating is sure to affect box office earnings, just as its sure to make some moviegoers second guess their decision to see the movie in theaters. PG-13 allows people to go see movies like this without a second thought, even though the subject might be unfamiliar to them. While you’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard of Fifty Shades of Grey, I still think that getting an ‘R’ rating is probably the best thing that could have happened to it – worst case scenario, they’d have ended up with an NC-17 and had to crop a bunch of scenes out. In this situation, at least we know that they’ve kept the sex from the books intact – and let’s be real, that’s the movie’s major selling point anyway.
