In this “General Hospital” spoilers report, we look at the rivalry that’s about to kick off between the ruthless lawyer and the tough British agent – and see who will come out on top. Paul Hornsby (Richard Burgi) better watch his back – Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) does not play!
Paul now knows, thanks to Kyle Sloane (Robb Derringer), that Anna killed Carlos Rivera (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) – unless Carlos is part of Paul’s plot and is alive and hidden away. Either way, Paul wants everyone to assume that Carlos could be alive.
This allows Paul to pin the shooting of Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) on Carlos so his hands are clean of that crime and it takes the target off of Ava Jerome (Maura West) – his literal partner in crime. Problem was, Sloane was sloppy and running his mouth so Paul had to kill the guy.
That means Sloane’s body will turn up soon and it makes no sense for Carlos to have killed him. Since Paul can’t blame the killing on the missing Jerome mobster, who will be his patsy for the killing of the former chief?
It makes sense that Paul would accuse the other former chief – Anna! There are plenty of motives that can be suggested for this crime. It could be a crime of passion – since Sloane told Paul that he and Anna had been very briefly involved.
It could have professional jealousy since Sloane supplanted Anna as Port Charles’ top cop. It could be grief that drove Anna to temporary insanity – she was still grieving the loss of Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan). They could even say Anna killed Sloane to cover up her own crimes.
The bottom line is, Paul is looking to make Anna the fall guy for that murder, not only to have someone to announce as Sloane’s killer, but also to get Anna out of Port Charles so she’s not poking into his dirty mob business. But Paul is gravely mistaken if he thinks Anna will go quietly. Plus, Paul is feeling pretty cocky since he has the PCPD at his disposal, the Mayor on his side, and Ava with her mob on the other side of the law doing his bidding. But Anna Devane is never without resources.
Here’s how Anna could turn the tables on Paul and take him down. First, Anna is an old-school spy and so is accustomed to investigating intrigue on a scale much more serious than Paul is playing. Second, Sam Morgan (Kelly Monaco) just partnered with Anna and she has a vested interest in this matter since she wants to clear her dad Julian Jerome (William deVry). Third, Sam has both Jake Doe (Billy Miller) who’s a smart guy and a human weapon working with her so that puts them in Anna’s court.
Fourth, Anna has Jordan Ashford (Vinessa Antoine) who may pay lip service to what the DA and Mayor want but, ultimately, will do the right thing in pursuit of the criminal element plaguing Port Charles – i.e. Paul Hornsby! Fifth, Julian can get inside info from his sister once they figure out that Paul is pulling Ava’s strings. And, if Ava thinks that Paul is going to go down, you can rest assured she’ll turn on him in a heartbeat and take up sides with Anna to save her own skin.
Ultimately, it will be Paul’s hubris that brings him down, but Anna will likely be the one to deliver the kill shot – either literally, metaphorically, or both. Paul has bitten off far more than he can chew by taking on Anna – particularly if he thinks she’s weak right now because she’s just lost Duke and seems to be alone in the world. Anna is far from alone and one of the most resourceful characters in Port Charles history. Paul has more than met his match!
