General Hospital Spoilers: Sarah Webber Back, Valerie Pregnant? GH Ratings Crisis Triggers Extreme Plot Changes

“General Hospital” spoilers reveal that writers and showrunners are desperately trying to save GH by any and all means possible. They are shaking up storylines, bringing in new character, old characters and reviving others in a last-ditch attempt to call a code blue and revive the failing ABC soap. Ratings are at all-time lows in the most important demographics according to reports and here is a look at some of the shenanigans the writers are trying to spare the show from cancellation – and also some ideas we wish they would try.

Busting up some old relationships and rekindling others:

The current Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna), Lulu Spencer (Emme Rylan) and Valerie Spencer (Brytni Sarpi) love triangle feels a bit forced. Dante and Lulu have always been solid and Valerie was introduced pretty much out of left field. They’ve also drug Dillon Quartermaine (Robert Watkins) back from the blue to add some tension to their marriage too. But Dante and Lulu have always been rock solid so this feels like their just tampering with a good thing. There’s also talk that Val may be preggers!

And they’re also pushing Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) back together with another wedding and that’s just a tired deal. Carly needs a new man – throw her in with Kyle Sloane (Grayson McCouch) and pair Sonny with Hayden Barnes (Rebecca Budig) or bring back Brenda Barret (Vanessa Marcil). There is also talk that they’re going to revive Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner) and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) or pair him back with Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman). Yawn…

They definitely need to amp up the younger set:

It feels like most of Port Charles is over 40 and that’s got to be killing their ratings to some extent. With Dillon and Valerie added to the cast that helps even though their entrances were a bit contrived. There’s also talk that Sarah Webber is coming back and hopefully Hayden will stick around once she wakes up from her coma. There’s supposedly another 20 something recast coming and talk is it may be Kristina Corinthos. It’s nice to have legacy characters but, let’s be frank, no one wants to see the 55-65 year old cast having half-dressed sexy time. Sorry, but that’s the way it is.

They also need some evil, but realistic evil:

The new Nikolas Cassadine (Tyler Christopher) darker and more dangerous is a lot of fun. And Liz Webber (Rebecca Herbst) plotting with him is a good bit of fun. Once Hayden wakes up, if she stays evil, that could be lots of fun too. Sonny needs to become the big bad mobster he used to be and it would be great if Ava Jerome (Maura West) took off that dumb Denise disguise and become his mob nemesis and took over her brother’s Jerome territory. Julian Jerome (William deVry) has become quite a milquetoast. Yawn again. And his thing with Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) is a snooze fest.

Here some things GH needs to do ASAP:

They need to speed up the plotlines. This thing with Jake Doe’s (Billy Miller) secret identity has gone on ridiculously too long. Most soaps are guilty of this and it’s irritating to the other TV we’re accustomed to. We need resolution faster, more action and faster pace. That way we get more screen time with our favorite characters.

We need more realism. Less evil twins, more plausible romance, more evil that’s well thought out and less cliched soap plots. Pregnancy scares are okay, back from the dead after being run over by a car and having your kidneys removed is not – but little Jake is back alive nonetheless, seriously? Mind controlling microchips in the brain are not okay. Freezing people and reviving them 20 years later is not okay.

Essentially, we need the showrunners to not treat us like idiots. Look to CW shows like Gossip Girl, Reign and ABC Family hit Pretty Little Liars for soapy plots that are intelligently written, addictive to watch and highly rated. A well-crafted daytime soap is possible – we can only hope that GH writers and producers wake up and smell the blood in the water and correct the course before out favorite soap flatlines and can’t be revived!
