#Nashville starts with Rayna crying on Deacon’s shoulder after he tells her about the cancer. He says he’s known since Christmas and she says she won’t let him leave her. Jeff calls Layla who tells her she has a blogger interview at noon. He tells her to get up and be on time and prepared. On the tour bus, Avery calls Juliette on video chat. He says he feels bad about leaving her but she says he couldn’t turn it down. She says the baby isn’t due for weeks and she’ll call if there’s a problem.
Scarlett stares out the window and Gunnar asks if she’s thinking about Caleb but says he’s not her BF and it was just a first date. He asks why she’s so quiet. She says last time she played that arena in Chicago she ended up crying under a piano. He says they’ll be fine and then asks her to help set up the band’s Twitter profile. He says they need a photo so they won’t just be an egg. They take a selfie. Albert meets with Teddy and says he didn’t expect to hear from him.
Teddy says he knows Lamar trusted him with sensitive information. He says Natasha thinks she’s under surveillance and he needs confirmation. Will is at the studio recording his new song. Kevin works with him playing guitar. Luke shows up and listens in. Kevin tells him it was great and Luke comes in and says he knew they’d be the right fit. Luke says it was great and the first track off his new album. He says he hopes they keep doing it and says to try a country love song next.
Deacon tells Rayna about all the things that Scarlett has been doing. She says Steve Palmer at Vanderbilt knows so much. Deacon says he’s been through it all and that all he can do is wait on the list. She says she’ll wait with him and they’ll do it together but he says no. Deacon says he can’t do this with her by his side. Rayna asks what that means and he says he won’t drag her through more hurt and see the pity in her eyes. She says it’s love, not pity. Deacon says he made up his mind.
Rayna says he doesn’t get to make up this mind. Deacon says she made every other decision. He says she chose Teddy, Luke and to not tell him about Maddie but this is his cancer and choice. Luke is surprised to see Sadie at the studio and says that was some interview. He says he didn’t realize it was so bad with her ex. She says she was private about it but felt like she needed to get it out there and put it behind her. She tells him she’s sorry for what happened with him and Rayna.
Luke says it wasn’t mean to be. They banter for a few minutes then he walks on. Layla shows up late for her interview and Jeff chastises her. She asks if he’s mad she didn’t let him come out with them last night He tells her to drop the 8th grade act and act right in front of the blogger who is well-respected and a friend of his. Layla whispers to him and asks if he slept with her and he says to focus and quit it.
Kevin tells Will that he doesn’t want to work with him. He says he can feel his skin crawl when he’s near him and says whatever Will’s problem is, he doesn’t want to make it his. Scarlett has flowers waiting in her hotel room from Caleb. Gunnar and Avery are staying in the room next door and barge in to admire them and tease her. Gunnar says they have 500 followers already. He reads some Twitter comments then stops and says his screen went blank.
Scarlett takes his phone and reads the tweet that asks if one of the guys is a shrink in case she goes crazy. Scarlett pulls out her computer and says she’s going to talk to that tweeter. The reporter tells Jeff that Layla reminds her of a young Alanis. The reporter flirts with Jeff and Layla gets jealous and stomps out of the meeting. Deacon comes back to the cabin and Rayna says she’s still there. She asks why he’s shutting her out. He says he’s dying and getting what he deserves.
He says he gets no happy ever after. He says nothing matters and she bashes one of his guitars and says – nothing matters? Deacon asks why the hell she did that but Rayna says nothing matters. He says that’s right and then he hands her another guitar and tells her to have at it and break them all. He says it’s not that simple and she asks if he doesn’t believe in them enough. He just sighs and she says he just broke her heart. She hands back the guitar and says she knows how much it means to him and walks out.
Jeff chases Layla down and she says Adele is clearly into him. He says he slept with her a few times but it meant nothing. She asks if that’s what they’re doing to. He says he isn’t capable of more now and she tells him to go have fun with Adele. Will tries in vain to write a song and gets impatient. Natasha meets Teddy in an out of the way place and he tells her the FBI has her under surveillance. He says it’s federal and he can’t do anything about it.
Natasha says she will tell them whatever she has to in order to make a deal even if it means talking about him. She says she can disappear if she has some money and asks for a couple of hundred thousand. He says he doesn’t have that much. Sadie opens the door for a coffee gopher into Luke’s studio then hears him singing and stays to listen. He sees her listening and it throws him off. He asks for a break. Sadie says she’s sorry and he says it wasn’t her. She says it’s a moving song.
He says it’s a little off his brand and he’s not sure if he should put it on the album. She says it would be a shame. He says it feels bare and she says maybe try another voice. The guys come back and find Scarlett still on Twitter. She says she’s been talking to these people. She says they just get crueler and crueler. She asks why these people want to hurt her. Gunnar says you can’t engage with them and she says she just wants people to know what really happened.
Gunnar says if she wants people to know, she should say it another way and he tells Avery to get the guitars. Deacon finds Rayna sitting on his porch. He asks about Maddie and says the two of them can survive anything but he can’t give Maddie the fairy tale ending only to take it from her. He says he has to protect Maddie’s heart. She says he doesn’t give them credit for being as strong as they are and he says he’s resolute and says Maddie can’t miss a life she’s ever known. He tells her he loves her and says if he makes it through they can be together. He says if he doesn’t it’s better this way.
Sadie works with Luke on the song after he asks her to show him what she means about another voice. Luke says he likes that and Sadie says it sounds like a shared experience. He asks her to lay down the vocals with him but she says she can’t do it. Luke says he shouldn’t have asked and offers her a cup of coffee instead. Teddy lurks outside Jeff’s gym and says he needs money to get her out of town. Teddy says he’ll make sure Jeff goes down with him and Jeff says he has nothing left to lose.
Teddy says that’s only because Jeff cares about no one but him. Will comes to see Layla and says he needs her opinion on a song he’s writing. He says it’s a love song about them and she says good songs come from real feelings and there’s nothing real about it. Then she says she loved him then asks if he’s been in love. She says he shouldn’t write about it. Will says he wanted to love her but couldn’t. She says she knows because she was there.
Avery calls Juliette and she says she’s fine and the baby is kicking like crazy. She says she’s good and tells him to enjoy the moment. Scarlett waits off stage and is getting nervous. Gunnar comes over and reassures her. He touches her hand and says if she needs him to just give him a look. Avery comes over and asks if he’s interrupting something. They both says no really quickly. Rayna comes and tells Deacon he’s wrong about all of it. She says if he does die she would rather have them be together like they should be as long as possible.
She says she wants her girls to see what true love looks like even if he dies. She says he can’t protect them from the pain of it no matter what and may as well enjoy what life has to offer. She asks him to quit fighting her and fight for them instead. She says they have to take this chance to be together and happy. He kisses her. Jeff comes to see Layla and he says he’s not good with intimacy and says caring for people makes things complicated.
She tries to close the door but he says he wants to try and see if there could be something more between them. The Triple X’s take the stage in Chicago. Scarlett tells the crowd that a year ago today she was there and was a mess and says now she’s a different person and that’s what this song is about. The applause is thunderous. Teddy blows up at his assistant. Avery tells Scarlett that was all her. Gunnar says he’s so proud of her and they have a little moment but then she runs past him to Caleb who showed up out of the blue.
Deacon tells Rayna it’s fitting they got back together at the house he bought for them. He says it won’t be easy telling Maddie and Rayna says they’ll get through this and all the other challenges together. He says having her there makes it all seem less daunting. Luke tells Sadie he’s trying to move on from Rayna but then he bumps into her or sees her singing with Rayna at the Opry. She says she hadn’t seen Pete in five years then he showed up on her porch and terrified her.
Luke says she let people hear her truth and he’s struggling to sing or say his. Sadie says to give himself time. He says she has a good ear. There’s an awkward moment. Teddy calls in Harris the finance guy. He says people are complaining about the old Harris place. He wants to set up a discretionary fund to start working on it and the guy says it will take about six months to set it up. Teddy asks if he needs him to, can he do it faster. Harris says he doesn’t want to be strong armed and he walks out.
Caleb tells Scarlett him showing up was bold but he came without expectations and got a hotel room of his own. Gunnar asks Avery what they know about him and he could be an ax murderer. Avery tells Gunnar if it bothers him that Scarlett being with another guy he should do something about it and do it fast. Will goes to see Kevin to apologize. He asks if he might give him another chance. Will says he can’t write on his own yet. Kevin asks why him. Will says he thinks he might understand something he’s going through and Kevin says he might.
Layla tells Jeff she’s in the same situation again – a relationship where she tries to change a guy into something he’s not. She says Will was incapable of loving her and so is he. Jeff says he wants to try and Layla says you shouldn’t have to try. She tells him from now on he’s her manager only. Teddy asks Albert to investigate the finance director. Avery calls Juliette who says she’s good and asks why he’s being paranoid. He says he just misses her. She says she doesn’t want to be a needy wife.
He asks her to hold the phone up close to their daughter and he plays a song for the baby while J rubs her belly and says that’s your daddy. Scarlett looks at a poem she wrote while she sits on her bed. Gunnar paces next door then knocks and goes inside. Scarlett isn’t there. She went to Caleb’s hotel. J tells Avery to call her in the morning and he says he will first thing. Rayna and Deacon go to her house to talk to the girls. She asks if he’s ready.
Maddie sees them holding hands and asks if they’re together. They nod. Maddie runs and hugs them and says – finally. Daphne hugs them too. Deacon says they have some other stuff to talk about too. Luke walks Sadie to the garage and offers to walk her to her car but she says it’s not a good idea. She says she enjoyed working with him and they shake on it. She walks off. Deacon tells Maddie about the cancer and she and Daphne break down.
Pete is waiting at Sadie’s car. He asks if she thought she could humiliate him on national TV. He comes closer and she pulls her gun. They grapple and there’s a shot. Pete crumples to the ground. Luke pulls up and asks what happened. Sadie’s hand is shaking and she’s horrified.
