Tonight on ABC their fantastical series Once Upon A Time returns with an all new Sunday November 29, season 5 episode 10 called, “Broken Heart” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, in a Camelot flashback, Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) becomes a Dark One and his lust for revenge against Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) is reignited. When Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Hook disagree about their best course of action, the final pieces of the puzzle are revealed as events in Camelot catch up to the present and we witness a charged confrontation between the forces of light and dark that sends our heroes on a collision course with destiny.
On the last episode, which was a two-hour two episode combo, we saw the back story about how Merida’s father got a magical helm that can control an army and how Arthur tried to take it from him and later threatened Emma and Merida to try and get it with Zelena at his side. The second part of the show saw Zelena’s pregnancy fast track thanks to Emma’s magical onion rings so that she went into birth and delivered her baby with Robin. As soon as her daughter was born, Emma kidnapped Zelena as part of her plot to rid the world of the Dark Ones for good. Then we found out Emma had made Hook a Dark One to save his life. #OnceUponATime starts with Zelena telling Hook to get on with it before the squid ink wears off of Emma. Hook says he’s going to return the favor and he has a dreamcatcher – he takes her memories. Zelena slaps an anti-magic cuff on Emma.
Zelena and Hook agree not to interfere with each other. Hook says it feels like he’s been reborn. Back in Camelot, we see Killian’s conversion into a Dark One and all the anguish he relived of the pain in his life as he was reborn dark and come up out of the Dark One’s vault as a new creature.
Rumple waits on him and he tells Hook he’s his guide, the voice in his head. Hook says he won’t listen to him. Rumple says he can get him the one thing he’s always wanted – revenge. Rumple says he saw his pain and can ease it.
He tells him he can kill him (as in Gold) now that he’s a Dark One. Emma’s parents come for her along with Regina. Emma is conked out on the sofa. Mary asks what happened Emma tells them about turning Hook into a Dark One to save him.
Regina says now they have a bigger problem. Emma says she was trying to get rid of the darkness for good. Mary says what she planned for Zelena was premeditated murder. Regina says Emma was stupid and they have to clean this up.
Mary says just give us back our memories and they can figure out Hook’s plans. David comes in and says all the dreamcatchers are gone and Regina wonders what Captain Dark One is up to. Hook is at Gold’s shop and reveals he’s a Dark One.
He talks about taking Gold’s heart and head for all he’s done. Gold says get on with it and Hook says he’s been waiting centuries and wants to savor it. He throws a sword at Gold and says – get your affairs in order, we duel at noon on my ship.
Gold says he knows that sword can’t cell Hook and he pulls out Excalibur and says that can kill him and tells Gold to take it from him. He asks Gold if he’s ready to finish what they started and Gold says – indeed.
Gold and Belle go tell the gang what Hook is up to and Emma asks why wipe her memory if Hook wasn’t going to announce his plan. Belle says they only have until noon. Mary asks about Merlin’s message that Nimue is the one that can stop this.
Emma says she can protect Gold if he takes off the cuff.She looks around and asks if they don’t trust her. Henry is there and Emma asks him to tell them to take off the cuff. He says no because of all her lies. He says the mother he knew wouldn’t do this to him.
Henry says she can’t trust him. Emma says he can forgive Regina and Gold, but not her. Henry chews her out and says she went off on her own when they were a team. He says she just wants her dark magic back so she can do this alone.
He walks out and Regina says give him time. The gang heads to the library and Regina says she’ll meet them there. David says they can’t trust the darkness and tells her to stay there so they can save her. Back in the Enchanted Forest, the gang finds out that Hook was made a Dark One.
They wonder where he’s gone to and Merlin says this is the darkest choice that Emma could have made. Merlin says they need to prepare now there are two Dark Ones. Mary asks Lancelot if his mother, the lady of the lake, could help.
Merlin tells Lancelot to go see his mother since she may help but it’s a two day’s journey. Lancelot leaves. David is frustrated but Mary says Emma chose love and says they would have done the same to save each other.
She tells David to have faith in Emma but he says it’s Emma’s faith in Hook that worries him. Hook is in the forest wondering why Dark Ones dress so badly then he magics a nice leather outfit that looks all piratey.
Emma runs up to him happy that he’s alive. Hook says he spent centuries quelling his blood lust and now it’s all back. She tells him Excalibur disappeared and she sees Rumple is at his shoulder. She says don’t listen, he’s not real.
She says they can have the future and their house in Storybrooke. She says she wants that future with him and he needs to want it too. He says he does, more than anything. He looks around and sees Rumple is gone.
She says they can do this and can get the darkness out of both of them for good. She says they need to go to the ones they love. Gold tells Belle he needs to prepare for this battle another way. He says he spent his life running from battles and it’s time to stop.
She says he’s a hero now but he says that doesn’t erase his past deeds. He says he’s hurt her but says if he survives, he will do better by her and will love her in a way he never did before – in honesty and courage.
Belle is speechless and he says if he wins, he’ll meet her at the well where they were married and if she meets him there, he’ll know she still loves him and wants to be with him. Zelena shows up at the hospital but finds Regina waiting there.
She thanks Regina for looking after her baby. Zelena finds the bassinet with Baby Hood on it empty. She asks where she is and Regina says – of course, we’re protecting that child from you. She says she won’t let Zelena take the baby from Robin.
Regina says she killed Marion and deceived Robin vilely to get the baby.Regina tells her the insanity needs to stop but Zelena says it can’t. Regina says it can. Merida is guarding Emma and has an arrow nocked. Hook is there and Merida fires.
He catches the arrow and then knocks her out. He says he thought she’d be with the heroes figuring out her plan. Emma says he still has feelings for her. He says of course he does – anger, hatred, disappointment.
He says she opened his eyes and he sees her for what she is – an anchor. He says she’s nothing more than a pretty blond distraction. He says he’s free of her now. Emma says the darkness is using him.
He says he doesn’t care but she says all she did she did for him. Hook says she’s so afraid she pushes people away and that’s why she’ll always be an orphan. She’s teary and asks him why. Hook says he wants to hurt her like she hurt him.
He backs away and leaves. Back in the EF, Hook and Emma kiss and she says she needs to scout their path and he says he’ll get them some more water. But when she walks away, Hook gets a headache and Rumple says Excalibur is close and Emma has it and wants to control him.
Emma tells Rumple to go away and he says ask her yourself. Hook asks if she knows where Excalibur is. She says Rumple is manipulating him and he says he can hear the dagger calling. He asks if she has it. She says yes and shows it to him.
He asks if she used it on him. She says no and he asks why she lied. She says she’s protecting him to help him resist the darkness. He says that’s why he begged her not to turn him in the first place. She says he was dying.
He says he stopped Mary from using the dagger on her to stop her from killing Merida. He says he always trusted her but she doesn’t trust him then asks how he can fight it if she doesn’t trust him to. He magics himself away in a poof of red smoke.
Notice Hook has red, Emma gray, Regina purple and Zelena green smoke.
Emma comes to Gold’s shop and he says it’s been a mess since she sent Merida to kill Gold. He asks why she’s there and she says she needs help to stop Hook and needs to get everyone’s memories back.
She hands him a vial of squid ink. She says he can drag out the duel long enough for her to steal the dreamcatchers back. He locks the squid ink in his safe. He says he will defeat Hook with honor and she calls it a suicide mission.
He says her stakes are far greater and asks if she can win on her own. She says she can and he mocks her then wishes her luck and he leaves to go face Hook. Regina and Zelena are at an apartment.
Regina reminds her she has powers too. Zelena says once you go green, you’ll never go queen. Regina is ready to kill her but Robin talks her down. Regina reminds her that Zelena can’t imagine the terrible things she’s done then says once she had Henry, she found her best self.
She says she hopes that kind of love can do the same for Zelena. Robin tells Zelena they will never be a family but says he and Regina agreed to have hope that Zelena can be better. He says she can visit the baby in the presence of one of them.
He hands over their daughter. Regina is worried. Zelena bounces and comforts the baby and says – I’m your mommy. This is killing Regina. At the library, Mary, David, Belle and Henry work the books.
Emma is there and tells Henry she needs him to trust her. She says she’ll do this without magic but with his help. She says Hook took her memories and says if they can get back the dreamcatchers, they can restore all their memories.
He says they need a locator spell and he can get it from his grandpa’s shop. He says he needs a name. She calls it Operation Cobra Part 2 and he agrees. Back in the EF, Emma looks for Hook in a field of flowers near the forest.
She conjures the sword and summons him. She tells him she’s sorry and he says he’s not in control of herself and says the last time Rumple was Dark he controller him and almost killed her. She tells him when she’s scared her walls go up.
He goes to walk away and she tells him stop and then he does because she holds the sword. She says she trusts him and hands it over to him. She says they can work together to get the darkness out of them.
She promises to never try and control him again. She tells him she loves him and takes his hand. He says he usually has to say it first. He pulls her to him and kisses her. On his ship, he waits as Gold approaches.
He says he wasn’t sure he would show up. Gold says he wouldn’t miss a chance to take his other hand. Hook says it needs to be a fair fight and heals Gold’s leg. Hook reminds him of when he took Mira from him when Gold was a coward.
The duel begins after some more trash talk. Back in the EF, Emma and Hook show up to Granny’s and they ask where they’ve been. He asks for Merlin so they can get on with this. He tells them to wait.
Merlin is sending a message to them about Nimue. Hook comes inside and Merlin says the darkness found him. Hook tells him the worst case scenario is already here and rips out his heart. Rumple says be careful – it’s the oldest heart in the realm.
Hook says he needs revenge and needs to get back from Storybrooke. Rumple says the curse needs a heart of the one they love crushed and Nimue is there. She says she still loves Merlin most of all and always has.
He says she’s not really there and Hook says she lives in all Dark Ones so when he crushes Merlin’s heart, so will Nimue. Gold and Hook’s sword fight goes on and Gold puts a sword in his gut. Hook says until he has Excalibur, it won’t make a difference.
He knocks Gold back and puts a knife at his throat. Henry and Emma find the dreamcatchers in the clock tower but they’re blocked by a spell. Henry also has a bottle he took from the shop. He says since she came to him, he can trust her now.
He pours some potion on the cuff and removes it from her arm. She tells him she’ll make it up to him and he says start by saving the day. Back in the EF, Emma comes in and sees Hook with Merlin’s heart. He says no one will ever control him again.
He tells Excalibur to go back to the stone from where it’s gone and it poofs away. Nimue says Dark Ones never do anything without something in return. Emma tells Hook she’s his happy ending, not revenge. She says don’t destroy that.
Hook says Killian is a lovesick puppy dog but that man died when she turned him dark. He crushes Merlin’s heart to ash. She runs to Merlin but Hook takes the ash from the heart and dumps it into the cauldron.
Hook tells Gold that if he had fought harder back in the day, he might have returned his wife to him, soiled but alive. Gold knocks a rope loose and a weight hits Hook knocking him down. Gold grabs the sword and holds it to Hook’s throat.
He tells Gold to do it. Gold says he’d rather Hook live with the knowledge that he bested him. Hook puffs away in dark red smoke and Gold throws down Excalibur and clutches his wounded shoulder. Gold goes to the well and Belle is there.
She says he won and he say – you came. He hugs her and says he’s glad she’s there. He wants to put the past behind them but she says she loves him and always will. Belle then says he broke her heart too many times.
He says he’s changed and his heart is pure now. Belle says he’s the man she hoped he would be. He asks why she’s doing this and she says she doesn’t want to make it work. She says she needs to be on her own to figure things out.
She says she’s spent too many years trying to fix him and has to protect herself. Gold cries as she walks away. Back in the EF, Rumple talks to Emma who tells Merlin to rest in peace and magics his body away.
Hook says it’s over and Emma says she will always protect him. She knocks Hook out and takes his memories that he cast the spell and that he’s a Dark One. She then touches his face and says he’ll be the man he was, the man she loves, when he wakes. She kisses him.
Rumple says it will take more than that to make him forget he’s a Dark One. She says she knows and she takes the memories of all those who knew that she turned Hook dark. Rumple says no one will understand and says why trust her family to help.
Emma says it’s her fault and she’ll fix it. She lays the dreamcatcher into the spell cauldron to add a memory wipe to the curse. She holds Hook in her arms as the curse takes hold and Rumple says she might not like where this leads then he adds – or worse yet, you might.
Merida is caught up in the curse. Merlin sees Excalibur in the stone and then Gwen warns him about the coming purple clouds. He says it’s extremely dark magic. It sweeps over Camelot as well. Emma has everyone assembled and they each have a dreamcatcher.
Henry tells them to trust her. She does magic and the memories go streaming back to each of them. David asks Emma what’s wrong and she says she knows what they’re doing. Rumple talks to Hook who says he got the blood of a man who’s been to hell and back and that’s what they need for the spell.
They are at a pond where there’s a portal to the underworld. It’s where the Fury tried to take Robin to hell. Rumple tells him how to open it. He uses his Hook and gray smoke swirls across the water and a boat with a lantern appears.
Hook says – bloody hell – and Rumple says that’s where it came from. A figure gets out of the boat and wades to shore. It’s Nimue. She says all of them are there in the flesh as promised. She says they are all there to snuff out the light.
Hook welcomes Nimue to Storybrooke and calls her love. The boat is full of past Dark Ones!
