Tonight on ABC their fantastical series Once Upon A Time returns with an all new Sunday March 22, season 4 episode 16, called, “Poor Unfortunate Soul” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, August [Eion Bailey] is tortured by Gold [Robert Carlyle] and the Queens of Darkness as they try to obtain info about the Author. Meanwhile, Regina [Lana Parrilla] worries about Robin Hood’s safety; and back in fairy-tale land, a young Ursula makes a mistake when she trusts Hook.
On the last episode, in order to infiltrate the Queens of Darkness as a spy for the heroes, Regina had to prove she was still willing to get her hands dirty. Meanwhile, Emma, David and Mary Margaret scrambled to keep tabs on their undercover operative. Hook requested an unusual favor from Belle as Henry made progress on his search for the Author. In a Fairy Tale Land flashback, Regina befriends Maleficent and helped her to rekindle her lost spark. Did you watch the last episode? On tonight’s episode as per the ABC synopsis, “Hook leverages his complicated history with Ursula to find out what she knows about Gold’s endgame. Gold and the Queens of Darkness torture August for information about the Author as Emma, Mary Margaret and David race to find them. Regina grows concerned for Robin Hood’s safety while she struggles to maintain her cover with the villains. In a Fairy Tale Land flashback, when a restless young Ursula enlists Hook’s help to run away from home, she soon learns it isn’t wise to trust a pirate.”

On #OnceUponATime, Killian is on a ship. He sees Smee eating and tells him he needs to stop eating their inventory they owe to Pan. He says until he destroys the Dark One, they have to keep the evil kid happy. They hear singing and Killian checks his scope. Smee says it’s beautiful. The pirates seem transfixed. They sail into a fog. Killian snaps out of it just before they smash into rocks.
They take evasive action and Smee asks what the voice was. Killian says it was a mermaid – the most dangerous creature in all the seas. We see the mermaid sitting on the rocks and Poseidon asks why she let the ship go. She says she wants to use her voice to make people happy. Poseidon says she must avenge her mother’s murder by luring humans to their death.
It’s Ursula as a teen and she tells her father if that’s the way he thinks, she doesn’t want to live in his ocean. Now, Ursula listens to an opera on the radio when Cruella calls her in to help torture August. Regina tells Cru she was torturing people back when she was still playing with puppies. Regina says August was made of wood so they need to light a fire under him. Regina pulls up a flame and August panics. Regina tosses the flame into the fireplace.
August says he was looking for the author for years too. He says he met a mystic called the dragon in Hong Kong who knew about it. He says the dragon was killed but he stole his research files. Malifecent asks if he’s telling the truth and Gold says he’s lied to his face before. The others ask Gold if they should work on the rest of their plan while he rifles August’s trailer. Regina asks what they’re not telling her but they won’t fess up. Regina looks worried when she looks into the fire.
Killian, Emma and her parents are out looking for Regina. David finds the end of the tracks and he says they need a locator spell but then Mary sees black smoke coming toward them. It blows into Mary who then speaks with Regina’s voice. She says Pinocchio is back to August but Gold is there. She says he wants more than just the author but won’t say what he’s planning so it’s bad. They go to see Belle and she says it’s impossible. Emma says they need the dagger. Belle says Killian has it.
They all look at Killian and he says he hasn’t seen it since she used it to send Gold away. She says he took it from her last night. Emma says Gold came disguised as Killian. Belle says he found a way to trick her again. Killian says he should have killed him and then Emma says that means he would be the Dark One. Killian says that would be a small price to pay. He says he’ll go find out what Gold is up to. Emma asks how. Killian says he took Ursula happy ending and can give it back to her.
Regina sits by August and he asks if it’s more kindling. She shows him the page she taped together and says it appeared to someone important to her. He asks if it’s Robin Hood and says the boy in him remembers. She says Robin did find it and says this page shows something that didn’t happen. She says she thinks August knows more than he’s saying. #Ursula stands and says she’s going to go stretch her tentacles. Killian is in the forest blowing a shell. She’s there and wraps him in her tentacles.
Killian says he has a deal but she says not after what he did. He says she can get what she wants and says he knows what she desires and where to get it. She asks if he still has it. He says if he returns it to her, she has to tell him why the Dark One is back in town. She says it’s a deal. Back in the day, we see a young Ursula singing in a tavern. Killian is there and everyone applauds her. He approaches her and says he knows she’s the one who almost sank his ship. He buys her a drink.
She says after she let her ship go, she and her dad had a show down so she stole a bracelet from her father’s vault to let her walk on land. She says her dad changed after her mom was killed by a pirate. She says that’s why he only lets her sing to guide sailors to her doom. She says her voice is all she has left of her mother. Killian says she has a rare gift. He says her voice can sooth even the most haunted soul. He says his every waking moment is consumed by revenge except when he heard her song.
Ursula says she just wants to make people happy. He asks why she’s there in the tavern and she says she’s earning gold to get to her mom’s favorite city. Killian says he’ll take her and tells her to meet him at the docks. He and Ursula are on the water and he says what she wants is on the Jolly Roger and says it’s back in the EF. He asks if she lost the power to open portals when she became a monster. She reminds him that he made her a monster.
She says she hasn’t dipped her toe into the sea since she was banished. He hands her something from his ship to track it. She dips a tentacle in. He says it didn’t work but she laughs and says he’s not the only thing that changed. His big pirate ship is now a ship in a bottle! Back in the day, we see Killian is followed out of the tavern and two men take him captive. He’s taken to Poseidon on board the Jolly Roger. The man says his daughter isn’t going anywhere and tells him to change her mind.
Poseidon enchants a sea shell and says it will take away her singing voice and she’ll return to the sea. Killian says he won’t betray her since she spared his ship. Poseidon offers him a way to get revenge on the Dark One. He says squid ink will paralyze any being – even Rumpelstiltskin. He tells him to show Ursula how awful humans really can be. He takes the shell. Killian comes to see Belle – Will is there and he says he needs the thief’s assistance.
They ask how they can know he’s not Gold and Ursula says Will would already be dead. Will looks at the tiny ship and makes a crack about it. Killian says not to insult the size of a man’s ship. Will says he may know someone who can help. Robin runs up to Regina in the woods. She can’t believe it. She kisses him then says someone is watching. It’s Regina, evil Regina, who says to get away from him. She wakes from her nap and Mal offers her something to help her sleep. She turns her down.
Gold comes back to the cabin and sees August has been gagged. Cru asks if he found anything. He says he didn’t even look because August is a born liar and would not have cracked so easily. He says he went to steal a potion from the fairies that will undo any spell. Gold says they made him real and this can undo that. He tells August this is going to hurt and pours the vial in his mouth. August turns to wood and Gold says they need to see if they can pull this puppet’s strings.
Emma and her parents are searching cabins. Emma says she gets where Killian is coming from and says she’d like to shove that dagger into Gold herself. They’re worried about August whose face turns back to flesh and Gold says the potion activated the built in lie detector. August says he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and his nose grows. Gold asks what he knows about the author. He says he doesn’t know. His nose grows again and Gold holds his growing nose closer to the fire. August says the author was trapped behind a door by the sorcerer.
August says Regina knows about the door. He says he knows she has an illustration of the page and knows his papa gave her his things. Regina says she gave the pages to Henry and they were mostly scraps. Gold asks August to describe it – he does but he doesn’t know where it is. He says all he knows is that it’s somewhere in Storybrooke. Gold pulls him away from the fire and says that wasn’t so hard. His nose is about 14 inches long.
Gold says they’ll start the door search at the sorcerer’s mansion. Regina offers to stay and watch August but Gold says Cru will stay and Regina will come search since she’s seen a drawing of it. Killian and Ursula work on the ship problem. She puts a drop of the serum Will obtained on the bottled ship and they toss it into the harbor. It grows and Killian says it’s a ship fit for a pirate. Back in the EF, Ursula was on the ship singing for the working pirates. Killian says he has something to show her. He holds out the enchanted shell. Ursula begs him not to use it on her.
He says her father thought she might return home without her voice. He says he was offered squid ink that would stop the Dark One. He says he may be a pirate but he has a code and promises to never take her voice away. He says that her father likely keeps the squid ink in the same vault as the bracelet. She asks if he wants her to steal it and he says now she’s thinking like a pirate. Now, Killian takes Ursula down into the hold. He tells her once he hands it over, she spills the details on the plan.
He holds out the shell and the voice filters out. She says it didn’t work and says villains can’t get their happy ending like that and says that’s why they need the author. Ursula says no deal but Killian pulls a gun and says he has to stop the Dark One. She slaps him with her tentacle and throws him over board telling him to have a nice swim. He was pretty well unconscious. Ariel is there and fishes him out still out of it. She tells him he can thank her later even though he didn’t hear her.
Killian wakes in the ship with Ariel there. She slaps him across the face and says that was for tossing Blackbeard overboard before she could find out where Eric was. She says she was trapped in the bottle and says Elsa did it to punish Blackbeard. She asks why Ursula was after him. He says villains can’t get their happy endings but she says maybe that’s because they go about it the wrong way. Back in the EF, Ursula brings Killian the squid ink but then Poseidon is there.
She says Killian told her that he was trying to take away her voice. Poseidon says Killian only cares about his vengeance. Killian tells Poseidon he knows how to make him suffer and uses his magic to take Ursula’s voice. He says now he’ll never sink another ship with her voice. Ursula says he had a code and says her father is a tyrant. Poseidon demands the shell but Killian says no way and says he’s going to destroy it and everything he holds dear.
Cru tells August he’s much better looking scruffy than wood. Emma busts in the door while Mary sneaks up behind and whacks her with a frying pan. Emma magics off his bonds and says it’s good to have him back. He smiles and she says they can go. Ursula is there and says her boyfriend is shark bait. She wraps Mary up in tentacles and threatens her to keep Emma from using magic on her. Back in the EF, Ursula tells her dad that she’s choosing her own side since he tricked her.
She says she won’t be a mermaid anymore and says she will be a sea goddess. She steals his trident and uses it on her mermaid legs to transform them to tentacles. He tries to stop her and she says she will be more powerful than him. She tells him he needs to fear her. Emma tells Ursula she doesn’t have to do this. Killian says he knows why she couldn’t release her voice. He says only the one that enchanted her can do that. Poseidon is there and says a young mermaid brought him through a portal.
Poseidon tells her he’s sorry for making her use her voice as a weapon. He says it was too painful after losing her mother and his pain turned to vengeance. He says he should have remembered he still had a piece of her mother in her. He takes the shell and says he can return her voice. He does. She sings out. Poseidon smiles. He says now that she’s whole he will leave her in peace. She says her voice is all they have of her mother. She says she missed him. She wraps her arms around him.
Mary notices that Cruella slipped away. The heroes say they need to slip away before Gold comes back. Emma asks Killian what’s wrong. He says he almost became what he used to be because of trying to figure out what the Dark One was up to. She says he fixed it and he wonders about the dark reminder. He says they’ve never talked about him being a villain. She says he’s not anymore. He says it’s only a matter of time before he loses his happy ending. She asks what it was since he’s found it.
Killian says it’s her. She’s all teary eyed and steps closer and kisses him. Gold, Regina and Mal are leaving the sorcerer’s place with no results when Cru pulls up. He asks why she’s there and she says the heroes rescued August. She says they have a mole. Cru says it was Ursula and she sold them out for a reunion with daddy dearest. Gold tells Regina to bring the illustration of the door so they can see what was missed. Before Ursula leaves, she says Gold is planning to use Emma.
She says the author can’t just change things in this world because he didn’t give people here their happy endings – Emma did. She says as long as there’s a savior, it won’t work. Ursula says Gold plans to turn Emma evil by filling her heart with darkness. Regina meets Emma and says she needs help. She says she had a dream that Robin Hood came back and they were happy but then her evil queen self showed up with a fireball. She says she thinks the evil queen wasn’t there to hurt Robin but to protect him.
Emma asks from what and Regina says she doesn’t know, she just felt it. She tells Emma that she used to track people and asks if she can get her a way to track Robin. Emma agrees. Henry calls Emma over when August wakes up. He asks why Regina is there and Emma says it’s okay. Regina tells him they need to talk about how she can keep up her cover with Gold. She says they think she’s stealing this page. August says the door isn’t at the sorcerer’s mansion.
August says his nose didn’t grow because he didn’t know at the time that Gold asked. He says that is the door, not just a drawing of the door. He says the author is trapped inside the book.
