#OnceUponATime begins with the Sorcerer’s apprentice rushing down some stairs toward a cauldron where he tells a magical embodiment of the sorcerer that the author broke the rules and tricked him into chaneling the savior’s darkness into Maleficent’s child. The sorcerer says there’s no way to undo it and says the two girls (Emma and Lily) will remain entwined and they must deal with the author. The apprentice says he trapped him in the book and the sorcerer says they can’t let him interfere with fate again.

At Cruella’s funeral, Isaac tells Gold that Cruella was good to him in her own way and Gold says someone had to die at the savior’s hand, so it’s fine with him. He says Emma is now on a dark path and they have to make sure she stays on it. Emma glares at them from across the cemetery. In town, Emma tells the others she’s going after Gold and Killian cautions her. She says she feels bad about what she did to Cru but says that’s regret. Maleficent shows up and says they have a common foe – Rumplestilskin.

She says Cruella’s death confirmed he was helping himself, not her. She says she wants Emma to find her daughter. Mary is shocked to hear she survived. Mal says that leaving town to help her will stop Gold. Mal says it will hinder Gold and Emma asks what she knows about her daughter. She says she was sent to Minnesota, adopted and named Lily. Emma says – no – and looks stunned. She rushes from the diner and goes to the library where she searched an old microfiche file. She finds an entry about Lilith Page, a baby.

Back in Minnesota in 1999, we see Emily packing for a camping trip with her foster family. The other kids, ask if she’s never been camping before. Emma goes to the garage to get a sleeping bag when she hears a noise. She grabs a bat and sees Lily. She tells Emma she had nowhere else to go and says she really needs her help but Emma doesn’t want to trust her. She reminds Emma they once promised to be friends forever. Her foster dad comes in and asks who this is and Lily lies and says her foster family just moved there. He invites her to stay for dinner.

Now, Regina shows up and tells Emma that fate is a bitch. Emma says how is it possible the one friend she had in the world was the one her parents banished. Regina says it hurts when fate conspires against you. She says it was no coincidence she adopted the savior’s son. She says Emma should push back at fate by finding Lily and redeeming her parents to prove Gold wrong. Regina proposes a road trip since she has to go to NYC and help Robin. She asks Emma to help since she knows NYC and says this can be the day they both beat fate.

Isaac asks Gold why he’s letting them leave town and Gold says it doesn’t matter where Emma goes dark so long as she does. Gold thinks the trip will make her darker faster. He unhappily watches Will walking with Belle and tells Isaac he has something to take care of. Emma hugs Henry goodbye and Killian cautions her from a path of vengeance and says he went dark because he didn’t have anyone to be good for but says she does. He kisses her goodbye. Her parents try to speak to her but Emma won’t hear them. Regina hugs Henry and they’re off.

Emma says she as an old address on Lily and says she lived less than hour from where she lived in Boston. Regina says fate was pushing them together. Emma says the last time she saw Lily, she was the one who pushed her away. Back in 1999, Lily joins them for dinner and looks at the chore charts and says their house has a Norman Rockwell vibe. She says Emma is lucky to be with them. Max sees a star on her wrist and asks what it is. Lily says it’s a birthmark. Lily’s foster mom asks how they met and she says it was a group home.

She says Emma was the first person she felt like was supposed to be in her life. Emma pulls Lily into the kitchen and asks why she’s lying about how they met. Lily says she’s trying to make a good impression. Emma sees the news on an armed robbery and recognized Lily’s face through the mask. She says she can explain. Now, Emma and Regina go to a horrible tenement. Regina says it would have been easier to have cursed everyone to live there. Emma knocks on a door and says they’re looking for Lilith Page. A neighbor says she died in a car wreck a couple of years ago.

He says he thinks she was drunk but says no one liked her and likely didn’t miss her. He calls Lily a loser and Emma slams him into a wall and is about to punch him when Regina stops her. She asks if Emma is okay and she says she’s fine but she looks pretty creepy and intense. At the shop, Belle kisses Will who is watching the shop while she babysits for Mary and David. Gold is suddenly there and says he’s in his home he should ask to be invited. Will says if he’s there to hurt him, to get on with it. Gold says he needs something stolen and Will is a thief.

He asks what he wants stolen and Gold says Belle’s heart. Will says he’s working on it. Gold tells him that Belle’s heart is gone and Will asks who would rip the heart out of her chest. Gold says Regina did it and Maleficent is guarding it at the Mayor’s office. He says he won’t give it to Gold who shoves him and says he’s not asking. Regina asks Emma if she was okay and says it isn’t Emma’a fault what happened to Lily. Emma says it may be because the darkness in Lily was meant for her. They almost hit a wolf and Emma slams on her brakes.

She says this happened before when she tried to leave Storybrooke. The wolf lopes off down a rode with a diner and they go that way to see about getting the tire fixed. Emma orders coffee and Advil and then Emma notices the star on the waitress’s wrist. Her name tag says Starla. Regina comes and says the car is being towed. Emma tells Regina it’s her. Back in 1999, we see Lily trying to explain the robbery and says it was her boyfriend’s idea. Lily says every decision she makes seems to come out wrong. Lily says she can give her bus ticket money.

Lily says she can’t leave her stuff because her necklace is in there and it’s the only thing she has from her birth mother. Emma agrees to get the necklace then tells Lily she’s gone after that. Now, Emma looks outside at Starla sitting out back of the diner. She tells Starla she knows her name is Lily and she asks how she knows. Emma touches her wrist and says Crappy Cub Foods in Minnesota. Lily is shocked that it’s Emma. She says she heard she was dead. Lily says she needed a fresh start and faked it. She asks how Emma found her.

Emma says it was fate like Lily said back as kids. Emma says all of Lily’s problems are actually her fault and she asks Lily to comes with her. Lily says she moved on and is fine. Emma says she can help her and Lily says she’s married and has a great daughter. She says she doesn’t need Emma blowing up her life. Emma tells her she’s sorry and Lily says she hasn’t thought about her in years. Her daughter gets off the bus and Regina walks up and says it looks like you didn’t ruin her life. Lily tells a girl from the bus she’ll give her free burgers for a week if she’ll small and walk off with her. She agrees.

Emma seems to buy it. Mary and David go to the Mayor’s office but Mal doesn’t want to see them. Mary says they want forgiveness for what they did. Mal says her daughter is the one they need to apologize to and Mary and David say they will do whatever it takes to make it up to her. She says they’re so concerned about Gold making Emma a monster, but that’s what they did to her daughter. Emma swiped Lily’s time card and says she doesn’t think that’s her kid. She says she knows she was lying and is going to help Lily by getting her back to her mom.

Back in ’99, Emma goes to the abandoned house where Lily was crashing and finds the necklace. It’s a half moon pendant on a chain. She sneaks back into her house and whispers for Lily. Her foster parents are there and ask where she’s been. She says she was in the garage looking for a lantern. Her foster dad says Lily broke into her desk and stole their vacation money. Her foster dad says they called her social worker and found out how she and Lily really met and then called the police station and found out Lily was wanted for robbery.

Her foster parents says she endangered their kids and she takes offense, grabs her bag and leaves town. Now, at Lily’s place, Regina and Emma find no signs of a kid but a map and clues about Storybrooke, Emma, Mary and David. They hear Emma’s car crank and run outside. Regina says the apprentice’s scroll is in her bag and that will get her into Storybrooke. Emma bashes Lily’s car window in and steals her car to give chase. She says Lily ruined one family of hers and she won’t let her ruin another. Gold goes to the Mayor’s office and Mal asks if he’s looking for Belle’s heart.

She tells him to come in and get it. He realizes there’s a spell on it. Mal says her work with Gold is over and says Emma and Regina went to get Lily and she’ll have her back soon and won’t need him. Gold says Emma and Lily are hopelessly entangled. He says he already has his wife’s heart. She looks over and sees Will scramble out the window with the heart. Emma says Lily always rips her life apart and Regina cautions her not to let anger rule her. Then Emma reminds her that Regina is planning to go after Zelena violently.

Back in ’99, Emma sits at a bus stop alone. Lily approaches her with a smile and Emma says she knew her little stunt would get her kicked out. Lily says she set her free and says they have enough cash to do what they want. Emma says she wanted to stay with that family and says they cared about her. Emma says Lily likes to pretend to be a runaway and doesn’t understand what it’s like for her. She tells her to go back home to her nice life but Lily says her family kicked her out. She says things got worse when Emma left and says everything is wrong.

Emma says to make better choices but Lily says her whole life is darkness but when Emma is around, things are brighter. She begs Emma not to walk away from her again. She asks her to help her. Emma says she’s done helping her and says she’s better off alone. She walks off and leaves Lily at the bus stop. Now, Lily heads for Storybrooke in Emma’s car. Emma races to catch up and floors it. Lily sees her in the rear view and Emma pulls up alongside her. They race side by side on the road and Emma spins the car and cuts her off.

Emma gets out and asks if Lily knew all this when they were kids. Emma asks how and Lily says she screwed her over before she was born. Emma and Lily comes to blows and magic surges and lightning strikes. Lily says her parents made her bad and deserve to be punished. She tells Emma there’s only one way to stop her and she knows it. Emma pulls a gun on her and Lily says of course it would end this way. Lily says she’s hard wired for bad decisions thanks to her and says her life isn’t worth saving. She says she will destroy everything of Emma’s.

She tells her to go ahead and end this before it even starts. Regina tells Emma to put the gun down. She says if she pulls the trigger, she will ruin Henry’s life and her parents. Emma says she has to protect them. Regina says her parents need a hero, not a murderer. Emma says she already murdered Cruella and Regina says it was an accident and says this is what Gold wants her to do so she shouldn’t do it. She tells Emma she’s better than this. Emma lowers the gun. Back in ’99, Lily is on a bus when a mn tells her that her necklace is nice and complements the birthmark on her wrist.

It’s the apprentice and he tells her he knows a lot of things and has answers about who she really is and why her life has felt so wrong. She asks who she is and he says a victim of fate and says he’s partially responsible but shouldn’t be telling her this. He says she’s not as responsible for her problems as she thinks and says the deck was stacked against her. He says she’s owed the truth. She calls him Yoda and asks what’s the truth. He says they should start with the necklace and says it did belong to her mother and asks if she’d like to hear about her.

Now, Emma and Lily sit and Lily asks why she didn’t just kill her. She calls herself the anti-savior and Emma says it’s not like that. Regina comes and says they have bad news from home about Belle’s heart and says she lost her leverage. She says they have to go to Robin now and Emma asks Lily to go along and offers her hand. Will shows Belle her heart in the box and says Regina had it. She asks why Regina would want it and Gold is there and says Regina took it to use against her. Belle asks if Will and Gold are working together.

Gold says they both care about her. He asks Belle to just listen for a moment and says he spent every day of their marriage deceiving her instead of trying to make her happy and now it’s too late. He says his heart is nearly all black and there’s no hope for him if he continues hurting her. He takes her heart and says he’s going to return it to her and Will can protect it since he’s proven unworthy. He presses her heart back into her chest then tells her goodbye. Belle looks sad as she watches him go but Will touches her hand.

In New York, Regina knocks on Robin’s door. He opens the door and he hugs her and asks why she’s there. She says she missed him and he says the same. He asks where Marian is and then tells him they have to act fast. He asks what this is and she says Marian is not who she says she is. She says it’s her sister Zelena and says she tricked them, went back in time and killed Marian and took her place to get back at her. Robin says this is crazy. Marian is there then and asks what’s going on. Regina calls her Zelena and says she told him everything.

Marian asks who’s Zelena and Regina threatens to rip her apart until she shows them what is holding the glamor. Robin defends Marian but then Zelena shows her true self. Regina tells Robin to get Roland so they can go. He says he can’t. He says he’s sorry but says he can’t leave her here. Zelena asks should she tell her and Regina asks what’s going on. Robin says she’s pregnant. Zelena smiles wickedly.
