In the past, we see Finch calling Alicia Corwin warning her that her actions caused the death of Nathan Ingram. He calls her a murderer and traitor and says this is a warning. He then works on a bomb. She calls in with a special code for the office of Special Counsel but is told he’s unavailable. He pops up on the screen as a threat but then is deemed non-relevant by the computer. He doesn’t look good.
Now, he talks about losing his best friend and says he’s struggled with his injury every day since then and says he may never regain the use of his arm. He’s with Dr Edwards, a shrink, who tells him that coming there was a bad idea but the guy reassures him and says the way he talks about his accident sounds like he’s carried this grief for some time.
Fusco says to tell him about his nut ball friends to see if he can get a group discount. Reese reminds Fusco that he’s now one of those nut ball friends. They sit in the car outside looking at a profile of Dr Edwards who is a grief counselor for victims of violent crimes and they see his wife Lucy was murdered eight years ago by a psycho delivery guy. Edwards asks if Finch lives alone and he says he has a dog. He says he was engaged then broke it off but doesn’t want to talk about.
Edwards says he’s been in that place and knows what he’s going through. He ends the session and Finch sees a photo and asks if that’s his wife. He tells Finch she died eight years ago. Edwards since even when your world stops the world around you keeps moving forward. Later, Edwards is with another patient, Angels, who’s in a wheelchair. She says she wakes up each morning and sees Barton behind the wheel high off his ass. She says he got out of rehab and is partying again.
She says it’s not fair that he does this to her then goes on with his life. Edwards says karma may yet find Barton. Fusco takes a call while Reese says he has therapy too. He goes to see his therapist Dr Campbell and says he met a guy this morning who lost someone and says that brings up bad memories in his life. She asks how he handles loss and he says she doesn’t want to go there. She says he can’t retreat inward again and talks about developing new habits.
Finch asks Reese how it went with her and Reese claims doctor-patient confidentiality. He asks if he’s having luck with Edwards’ apartment. Finch says he’s getting better at breaking and entering bit doesn’t understand the carnitas. He says it’s a good system for neutralizing security systems. A woman in the office next door brings Edwards mail over and asks where Hector is. Edwards says he only comes in two days a week. Finch runs into Hector – a dog – and feeds him the carnitas then tells Reese he’s funny.
Becca invites Edwards out to a bar with her friends but he says he has plans. She says to say hi to Hector. Finch says his wife’s belongings are all over the apartment and doesn’t seem to have moved on. Edwards goes to the gym and Reese follows him. He sees the guy stash a gun there. He tells Finch that Edwards planted a gun in someone’s gym locker and then left without working out. Next, Edwards goes to a bank and throws something in the trash. He’s setting up pieces.
They wonder if he’s going to rob the bank. Reese says he’s making his move but Edwards just takes a business card from a desk then leaves. Then he uses a code to go into a service entrance. He goes to a breaker box and does something then makes a call from a burner phone. He asks for Barton and says he’s calling from the bank and says the government froze his account. He uses the name of the guy on the card. He says if he comes down they can straighten it out. The guy rants and agrees to come down.
Finch says Edwards has done extensive research on both Barton and the bank. Edwards then calls Brian Humphries and says his associate is about to rob the bank and says if he cooperates, no one will get hurt. He describes Barton and tells him to cooperate. Barton comes in angry asking for him. The banker asks him to remain calm and says they don’t want any trouble. He hands over his keys. The item Edwards put in the trash can blows up and the power goes out. They panic and then take down Barton.
Reese says their new number is not really a victim and just framed Barton for a robbery. Finch agrees as he found evidence that Edwards has done this before and says their new number is a vigilante. Finch has the evidence on the other people has put in prison. There are seven people that harmed his patients. He says it dates back to his wife’s death. Finch describes the circumstances of Lucy’s death. All the evidence was circumstantial. Reese says they could hire Edwards and take the week off.
Reese says maybe one of his previous targets is coming back for revenge. Edwards gets back to his place and they watch. They see him putting tape on his tuxedo. They wonder if he’s starting a frame at tonight’s gala before an elite crowd. Reese tells him to save his money and says he can likely get in another way. He goes as Dr Campbell’s plus one. They take a seat and she says she’s glad to see his empathetic side. He says she looks stunning and she says she likes to hear that. Fusco is there.
He’s uncomfortable and says he hasn’t worn a cummerbund since prom. Finch tells him that he’s welcome for the new tux. Edwards takes the stage and introduces them to his wife. He shows a photo. He says she was a photographer and they met when he ruined a photograph she was taking. He shows the photo. Finch says Morris is sneaking in through the service entrance, the man accused of killing Lucy. Edwards talks about proposing to Lucy.
Morris comes into the room and Reese looks around. Reese stands and goes to intervene. Fusco tells Campbell about a recurring dream to distract her. The speech ends and the lights come up. Morris confronts Edwards. He shoves him back and he rants about seven years of his life. Morris is dragged out screaming – seven years. Edwards leaves and goes to open his car but Reese says the battery is drained and thinks it’s a bomb. He knocks Edwards down just before it explodes then asks him why Morris wants him dead.
Back in 2010, Finch is in a wheelchair. He stops to answer his buzzing phone. There’s a call from a blocked number. He hangs up on the call and starts wheeling himself again. He stops near some stairs and watches Corwin get out of her car. A pay phone rings nearby. He looks at it then finally wheels over to it upset. The call is static. He hangs up and looks around. He looks up at a security camera and says – it’s you, isn’t it. You’re trying to tell me not to do this.
Then he says – I haven’t given you a voice so you have nothing to say. He goes back to staring at Corwin’s car then checks to make sure he has the bomb on him ready to go. He wheels towards the car. Now, Edwards is at the police station and they ask if he’s had any contact with Morris since the trial. He says he never thought he’d come after him. Reese says his testimony put Morris away but Edwards says him killing Lucy is what put him away.
Edwards says it was the worst night of his life. He says he called her on the way home but she didn’t answer which wasn’t unusual. He says he saw the delivery van up front and it raced off. He says upstairs the door was hanging off the hinged and she was dead with a small brown package lying beside her. He says Morris denied having anything to do with her death. He says he wants to go home and rest and says Morris can’t take any more years of his life. They promise to find him.
Reese wonders why Morris would bomb his car and confront him in front of everyone. Fusco says criminals were done and Morris worked in demolitions before he worked delivery. Finch says he found some activity on an old email account of Morris’. The message says something about Roscoe and Reese says that’s slang for a handgun. Fusco tells Finch the bomb was a real amateur job and that a guy like Morris would have known better.
Reese waits for Morris and Finch says that the story that Edwards told him matches exactly what he told the court and cops. He says it was verbatim about the “relentless snow.” Finch says it’s like he memorized that testimony. Finch says cell phone records showed that Edwards didn’t arrive home for hours after her death and wouldn’t have seen the truck. Reese sees that Edwards was the one buying the gun using Morris’ old email account. He’s setting Morris up again!
Reese says Edwards is heading home and is trying not to touch the gun. Fusco says Morris got a text message that induced him to go to the gala then Edwards blew up his own car. Finch says Morris may be innocent. Fusco says there was no other suspect and Morris was obsessed with her. Edwards used the tape on his lapel to put Morris’ fingerprints on the gun then burns some gunpowder to create powder residue.
Becca shows up to pick up Hector. She says he’s happy to watch him and Edwards says something came up he has to take care of tonight. She takes the dog and goes. Edwards leaves his apartment and Reese follows. Fusco says he thinks Morris is likely staying with his brother. Edwards breaks into Morris’ brother’s apartment. Reese follows. Finch asks what he’s doing. He says he’s making it look like Morris is stalking him. He puts photos on the wall of Lucy and himself along with some clippings.
Edwards leaves and Reese follows. He tells Finch that Edwards has been planning this for years. Finch says it won’t bring him any peace if he’s targeted the wrong man. Reese says it will destroy Edwards if they stop him. Finch says he’s been down this path and Reese asks where that path took him. He loses Edwards. Finch says his phone is at home so they can’t track him. They can’t find him but found Morris’ cell signal. Finch calls Fusco and asks if he’s found the brother.
He says he thinks Edwards sent Morris a fake text phone. Fusco has the brother in custody. The message says to meet him at the conservatory. It’s too far from Reese so Finch heads out knowing he could be in danger. Morris calls out for Sid but finds Edwards with a gun instead of his brother. Edwards says he’s been waiting seven years for this.
Back in 2010, Corwin gets in her car. Finch waits with the trigger for the bomb. She’s on the phone and says someone is coming after them and she’s received threats. She gets in the car and hears a distorted voice saying he knows she’s gone after and killed the engineers associated with Northern Lights. He asks if she thought that no one would be watching her. She’s locked into the car and the voice says there’s an explosive device on her car and not to move.
The pay phone by Finch rings and rings. He continues talking to Corwin. She says Nathan was a dear friend and she didn’t know anything about his murder. She says she knew after it happened but didn’t know it was planned. He says she’s a trained liar and he can’t know if she’s telling the truth. She says everything they did was to make the world a safer place but they strayed from the path and says she has regrets. The pay phone keeps ringing. She says maybe he’s right, maybe Nathan’s death is her fault.
She says she saw and ignored the signs and may deserve this. He puts his hand near the trigger then stops and pops the locks on the car door instead. The pay phone stops ringing. Corwin gasps in relief. Harold rolls away in his chair. Now, Edwards orders Morris to dump something on his hands. He sniffs the envelope and says it’s gun powder. Edwards says to do it so he does. But then Finch is there and says he hasn’t been completely honest.
He says they’ve both been down the same road but he’s learned that revenge will never bring you closure. Morris says he dropped the package off to her that morning and that was it. He says she signed for it then he left. He says he never came back. Edwards says he knows he killed her. Finch sees their initials on the bench and asks why he would desecrate her memory by committing murder where they were happiest.
Edwards turns the gun on himself and says with the evidence planted in his apartment, Morris will go away for life. He tells Finch to tell the cops that Morris shot him. Reese is there and Finch tries to talk him down. He says he watched someone die before his eyes and he tried to make everyone pay with their life that was responsible. He says he realized that that deserved it but life was more complicated than that. Finch says he may never know what happened but there will be no doubt what he did to Morris.
Finch says the world around you keeps moving. He says if Edwards dies here, Lucy will die with him and he knows he doesn’t want that. Edwards stops and Reese takes the gun from him. Reese is at Campbell’s office and she says he’s less chatty than usual. He says it was a long night. She says she got him into the gala and now he has to tell her something. She asks him to tell her something he’s not proud of starting with how he deals with grief.
Reese says there was a woman once that meant everything to him. He says he kept her at arm’s length and went away for a long time. He says he learned she died. Campbell asks what happened. She says he has to grieve to move on. He says he’s not sure he knows how to do that. Becca shows up with Hector and says he missed him. He thanks her for watching him. She says maybe they can walk Hector together some time. Finch watches this on the cameras then shuts them down.
He looks over at his own dog and puts on his hat and asks if he wants to walk. The dog runs for the door. Finch tells Reese that Edwards seems to be moving on. Reese says the machine has to know the truth of whether Morris killed Lucy. Finch says some questions may never be answered. He says if Morris tries to kill again, they will be there. The machine checks out Morris on a security feed then starts to look back at 2007 to investigate Lucy’s murder.
