In a bunker, Olivia runs as if for her life. She’s barefoot and looks disheveled. In her apartment, Olivia goes to answer the door. It’s Jake and he wants to talk about her dad but she doesn’t want to. He says he had Rowan but he lost him. She says that’s okay. She says she also got pizza and Gettysburger for them. She’s looking through her albums and puts one on that she says is a favorite. She tells him to shut up and dance with her. It’s right where we left off last season.
He tells her he loves her and she says she wants both he and Fitz and won’t choose. She says she’s choosing Olivia. They undress each other and kiss. She says she’s never had sex on top of the piano and she wonders if it’s slippery. He says he’ll grab a blanket and tells her not to move. She asks where she’d go. She’s grabbed from behind and spills her wine as she’s hauled out by a masked intruder. Jake comes back with a blanket and pillows and panics.
He runs for the door then down the stairs just in his boxers. He races out to the street and sees the usual cars on the crowded streets. He hears a car crank and goes running after it. He runs as fast as he can but can’t chase it on foot. He saw the plates. He calls Huck and tells him that Liv was taken. He gives him the plate and says to run it and listen to chatter. He says it was a pro but wasn’t Rowan. He says they had her out of here in 25 seconds and knew what they were doing.
He grabs up the wine glass she dropped and heads to Olivia’s office to meet the gang. We see the same scene again. The door opens slowly and we see Olivia touching her assailant and then touching the door frame to leave trace. She’s dragged into an apartment across the hall, not anywhere else. We hear a thump and a groan like she was knocked out. Someone watches through the peephole as Jake panics. Olivia sees her neighbors are all duct taped up and they tape her mouth too.
The kidnappers watch on cameras they placed and count down to when to take off with the car to lead Jake away. They say – run Forrest run. Olivia pries a ring off her finger and drops it on the floor. She shoves it under the edge of the carpet. She tries to make noise but they hold her tight. They listen to Jake calling Huck. She tries to call out to him but he doesn’t hear. Jake gets into the elevator and leaves. As soon as he’s gone, the team breaks down the surveillance equipment.
The man tells the woman it’s all over now and Olivia panics when one of the men pulls off his mask. She knows he wouldn’t show his face if he would let her live. They shoot her in the heart, pack up and take off. They leave in an ambulance with Olivia in the body bag under the dead woman. They pull her out and tells her this is the part where you usually beg for your life, bargain, offer money and secrets. He says after this they are on a plane and out of the US.
He asks why she’s not negotiating and she says she doesn’t need to bargain with someone who doesn’t have the power to say yes or no. She says they all looked to him when they spoke. He tells her there are many things scarier than death and they knock her out with some drugs. Olivia wakes and looks around. She hears traffic noises overhead and a little sunlight comes in. She goes for the door but the guy in the room with her tells her it’s locked and he already tried it.
She tries it anyway. He tells her she won’t be able to see anything. They hear the call to prayer playing on speakers. He asks if she hears it too. He says he thought he might be hallucinating it. She asks where they are and he says they’re going to die. She says that won’t happen and asks his name. He says he’s Ian McCloud and that he was a journalist in Egypt. He says a guy stabbed him in a neck with a syringe and then he woke up there.
He says there was another guy there but someone paid his ransom and he’s gone. Ian says they’re asking $10 million for him. She asks why they’re there. She says Americans don’t kidnap Americans and bring them to foreign countries unless. Ian asks unless what. She says unless they want her there for some reason. She screams for a bathroom and bangs on the door. They lock her in shackles and walk her down the hall. She takes note of everything she sees.
They tell her she has five minutes and close the door. There’s a filthy sink and a scary toilet but at least there’s toilet paper. She covers the seat carefully before she sits down. They walk her back to her room. Later, their captors bring food and Ian says she should eat because sometimes they forget to bring food. He says they left for three days to get her and he wasn’t fed. She asks how long he’s been there and he says days or weeks.
She asks if he knows what’s outside the red door and if he’s heard dogs or animals. He rants and says he won’t help her and won’t die for her. He starts crying and says he lied about the other prisoner Bradley. He says his people paid but he doesn’t think they sent him because he screamed for a long time and then there was a gunshot. He says he lied and they’re never going home and he’s sorry. Olivia starts crying. She asks if he has someone he cares about.
He says his daughter Kira. She tells him he’s going to get out of there and live for Kira. She tells him things look bad but says she’s going to save them and makes him repeat that back to her. He asks how and she says she’s Olivia Pope. She smiles then laughs a little and says it’s funny because it’s useless. She hands him his food and tells him to eat and she picks up her bowl and eats too. She says it’s not bad, not good, but not bad.
Ian tells Olivia about the book he wrote and that his wife was a journalist who died in a car bomb in Afghanistan. She says she never married. They hear a noise and he says he has a recurring dream that a seal team breaks in and saves them. She has him check her back for a tracking device and says her dad put one in her mom but she didn’t know. He asks if her dad is Ike Turner. She says she hopes he didn’t put one in her and says he wouldn’t come for her anyway.
He asks who she hopes put a tracking device in her besides her father. She says nothing. He says he there’s nothing there so whoever it was must have failed. He’s cracking and she tells him that if she’s missing the President of the United States won’t stop until she’s found. She says that means he’ll be found. Later, she’s taken out of the room and to the bathroom. This cycle is repeated again and again with one of her captors always telling her she gets five minutes or he’s coming in.
After a while she no longer bothers papering the seat. She looks at her nails and then sees a breeze as the toilet paper moves. She gets up on the sink and looks out the window. She hops back down, pulls off her bra, pulls out the under wire and uses the floor to bend it. She uses it to catch the window latch. She gets the latch just as the guy comes in. She struggles with him and she kicks him. The other one hauls her back to the room and stops the guy from shooting her.
They argue and the one calls her a bitch and the other says he wants his. They tell her she has to be punished for trying to escape but she says you can’t do anything to me. They point at Ian and she says no. They drag Ian out. He screams her name. He begs them not to kill him. She hears gunshots then silence. One of the guys comes back and tells her that there is no way out of here.
(At this point, I think Ian was actually the boss and was planted there. That way he could coerce info out of her gently by pretending to be a fellow captive but when she wasn’t giving up anything, he told them to take him out at the next opportunity so he can go back to running the operation. That’s my theory anyway…)
Olivia lies on the floor. She hears the call to prayer. She thinks about the door. She hears helicopter blades whirring. There’s a crash and then gunfire in the hall. Suddenly there’s a light in her face and Jake is there for her. He tells her it’s okay and that he’s got her. He lifts her into his arms and carries her out. She wakes and she’s in a bed. She smiles and goes to get into the shower. She calls out to someone that they better get in there with her.
It’s Fitz. He gets in with her and says he loves her. He kisses her and starts stroking her. She moans. They’re in the house he built for them. He tells her that he’s been asked to throw out the first pitch at a game. She opens the fridge and we see jam she’s made. He’s the mayor of the little town. He says he has to take care of a pothole. He tells Tom he’s lucky. She tells Tom he’s not supposed to be there and he says he’s there protecting Fitz from her. He reminds her that she asked him to come.
Later, she walks her big golden lab and walks by horses. She tells Abby she has to stop calling her and says she’s happy here. She says she chose Fitz. Abby says she didn’t choose and Fitz just resigned and went all Wallace Simpson. She says where are Fitz’s kids and Huck. She asks where Jake is and Liv says she doesn’t know. She asks Olivia if she loves either Fitz or Jake. Abby tells her that no man is coming to rescue her and she needs to rescue herself.
She tells Olivia she dropped something. She looks down and sees the ring she left. She says it’s not her. Tom is there and says there’s no way out of there. She wakes on the floor of her cell as they throw a bowl of food down by her. The guy tells her if she doesn’t start eating, he’s going to stop cooking. She grabs the plate and starts shoveling down the food. She bends her other bra wire into a hook and bangs on the door and demands to go to the bathroom.
She asks her one guard where the other one is. She looks at the gun in his holster and the red door. He unlocks her shackles and lets her into the bathroom. She says she knows – five minutes. The guy locks the door. She pulls out her bra shiv ready to try the latch again and sees the bricked over the hole. She slaps her hands over her mouth to keep from screaming. She slaps herself on the leg to keep control as she sobs. She finally pulls it together.
She sits on the floor and dries her eyes then sees the little ring she saw in the dream. It’s a metal plumbing cincher. The guy lets her out and says he bricked it over himself. She hits him. The scene resets and we see her removing the ring and it loosing a pipe she uses to beat him in the head with. She takes his keys, unlocks her shackles, grabs his gun and runs for the red door. She hears her own voice saying gladiators don’t run.
The other guy is there before she can get to the door. He asks why he can’t find a feisty girl like her in the real world. He says she would have shot him already if she was going to. He says that gun is a man’s tool. She shoots him in the head when he reaches for her. She unlocks three locks on the red door with shaky hands. She pushes the door open and steps out into a room with a screen and speakers playing the music.
Ian is there and says he told her there was no way out of there. He says she’s a clever girl. She asks what the hell is going on. He says he needed information and devised the right set of circumstances to pop her cork. Ian tells her that she told him that the President will never stop looking for her and that’s helpful information. He tells her they have a lot of work to do and this is just the beginning. She walks back down down the hall and Ian closes the red door.
THE END!
