Tonight on FOX, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE continues with an all new Monday, July 27 season 12 episode 9 called “Top 18 Perform + Elimination”. We’ve got your recap down below. On tonight’s episode the Top 18 dancers perform, but two contestants are eliminated.

RECAP:
Well, in this battle between Team Street and Team, there appears to be one team already in the lead. And mind you this is only the third week of the actual competition.
On tonight’s episode of “SYTYCD” it was revealed that Team Stage has won over 50 percent of the vote and, because of that, the captain of Team Street swore his people were going to change all of that by the end of the show. However, I am and, so I’m sure some of you are just as well, a tad confused about this whole voting thing. Does the vote go to Team Stage if the dance itself is technical or does the vote to the group that had the majority of Stage dancers?
Because no matter how you look at it, Team Stage and Team Street is pretty much one big mash-up at this point in the competition.
So, really, how is Twitch going to turn this one around? Particularly as some of his best dancers from Team Street were eventually pushed intro trying something new. Like contemporary for instance.
And you only need to look at Jaja’s progress in this competition to see how well that’s working out for the Team Stage’s captain.
Jaja is considered a strong contender and originally she started out as a krumper. Yet, tonight, she danced a contemporary number choreographed by Stacey Tookey. And there wasn’t one person involved in this dance that didn’t come off smelling like roses.
Stacey is pretty good at what she does and she knows how to get the reaction she needed. So during practice, she pulled Alexia aside and told her that, although she’s small, she has to dance as if she was six feet tall. And, what do you know, that was Nigel’s first bit of praise for the night.
He told Alexia that she took the advice well and was able to run with it and he clearly loved Jaja for the way she’s been able to transition from Street to Stage. Almost flawlessly. But, truthfully, the other way around doesn’t seem to work all that well.
And so we rarely see someone on Team Stage that’s able to keep up with someone from Team Street if they were to say do Hip Hop. Which, by the way, became very clear when JaQuel Knight came up with a dance that was admittedly not all that technical but instead relied on emotion. Only for Megz to be the one that pulled it off.
Megz was a on a team with Moises and Jim. Yet the guys appeared to be backup dancers rather than stars in their own right. So Megz was credited for doing her best however the judges were very clear when they each said she couldn’t hold up this dance on her own.
And that’s why Mosies is once again in danger.
Moises has this baby face and it probably fits right in with a happier contemporary piece. But, for hip hop, he needs to know how to transition into someone that can at least appear tougher.
So him being in danger wasn’t that shocking. And for that matter neither was Edson’s new when we found out he was also up for elimination.
Edson was with Yorelis and JJ and though he didn’t necessarily wow the judges – he wasn’t the worst by far. Yet members of Team Stage is just not doing so well in any of the fast paced numbers.
But there are members of Team Street that are failing to keep up with a crossover number. And the dance that followed sort of proved that. See, a famed choreographer came up a dance that was supposed to be club Chacha; only it didn’t a thing like Cha-Cha.
So, Asaf who is apparently working even harder now in the competition, came off as blundering meanwhile his partner Marissa came off as selfish.
Weird, but had some truth in it. Asaf simply could not pull off ballroom or even the watered down version and Marissa spent more time working on her chemistry with the audience than she did with her partner. Thus it was only fair that Asaf founds himself in danger, finally, during the first half of tonight’s episode.
Yet Burim’s performance came as a surprise. If you can recall, during callbacks, there were many times that Burim had to come back onstage just to remind the judges why he was there in the first place. And so really the fact he made it into the top twenty was just sheer luck on his part.
Only, since he’s gotten in, Burim has improved. And week by week he’s been shedding some of his old Beat Boy ways.
And in a number choreographed by Sean Cheesman, Gaby, Burim, Ariana looked great. Sure, there was some minor mistakes. Such as when Burim didn’t know where one of the girls’ feet was. But other than that their African Jazz number was a hit with both judges and the audience.
So maybe it’s me but overall Team Street is doing better at this whole blending in thing.
Neptune and Kate had this heartfelt number that was a bit animation and a bit contemporary and the two were simply great together. They had chemistry and Justin really helped with their technique during practice. So for once the judges didn’t have anything bad to say about Kate’s performance.
Normally she came across as cool as cucumber and sometimes that makes it look like she’s rarely dancing. But this time she shined and Neptune was named one of the judges’ favorites on top of that.
Sadly, though, Kate’s sudden change came after she was in danger.
So once again I have problem with the voting. And the only reason I’m not overly upset is because of the magical duo known as Pharside and Phoenix. Those two came up with a number that Nigel swore would be on the twentieth anniversary show and I for one hope that’s true.
Virgil and Hailee were given a hip hop robotic number and, with this dance, they were both able to truly show shine. I mean they had everyone on their feet when they were done and kept people laughing neither of them could bare to break character afterwards. So this one dance was their defining moment.
Virgil was known as a crazy sort of a guy but now that’s actually who he is. He’s the one that can make a robot dance into his own. As for Hailee, she didn’t exactly shine during any of her other performances but tonight she appeared to be great at Hip Hop. It was almost as if that’s where she belonged all along.
So the voting was tough. And yet America chose to save the girls. The Twitter vote saved Ariana and Kate from elimination but the judges’ vote saved Asaf and Edson.
And I just don’t believe it.
I can understand why they would send Moises home. But to choose Asaf over Burim was a choice that needed a little more clarification other than Asaf has progressed more. Because I want to know what kind of progression did they see?!
