Supernatural Recap – Catholic Death Crisis: Season 10 Episode 16 “Paint It Black”

Supernatural continues tonight on the CW with an all new Wednesday March 25, season 10 episode 16 called “Paint It Black,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Sam [Jared Padalecki] and Dean [Jensen Ackles] investigate a series of suicides committed by people who all killed themselves with self-administered disembowelment. The probe reveals the victims were all members of a Catholic church and had recently given confession. Meanwhile, Crowley captures Olivette, the leader of the Grand Coven; and Rowena pleads her case to once again be allowed to practice magic freely.

On the last episode, despite Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) directive to forget about looking for a cure for the Mark of Cain, Sam (Jared Padalecki) continues to do research. Dean suspected Sam is hiding something but decided to focus on a new murder case where they run into Cole (guest star Travis Aaron Wade). The three team up and learned a Khan worm is infecting men and turning them into murderers. Unfortunately, the worm made it’s way into Cole. Did you watch the last episode? If you missed it, we have a full and detailed recap right here for you.

On tonight’s episode as per the CW synopsis, “Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a string of suicides committed by people with little in common other than the identical, grisly method of death – slow, self-administered disembowlment. All of the victims were members of a Catholic church and had recently given confession, leading the brothers to suspect the priest (guest star Stephen Daniel Curtis) is somehow involved. Meanwhile, when Crowley (Mark Sheppard) captures Olivette (guest star Teryl Rothery), the leader of the Grand Coven, Rowena (guest star Ruth Connell) pleads her case to be allowed to practice magic freely again.”

On #Supernatural, in Worcester, Massachusetts, in a church a man is in confessional. The priest absolves him of sins. He tells the guy, Terry, to go in peace. As the man leaves the church, some sort of presence takes over him. He takes a pillar candle off the altar, takes the candle off and now has a strong implement with a long spike in it. Outside the church, Terry uses it to stab himself in the heart.

Crowley’s man tells him that Rowena is terrorizing the court and begs him to talk to her. He turns to show Crowley that she put a replica of his face on the back of his head. Crowley calls for his mother. She comes in and he asks about the second head. She says it’s the work of a rare talent. She says she can’t practice witchcraft with the Grand Coven’s ban on her. He threatens to throw her back in the dungeon when she says that’s a minor wish.

She says he wouldn’t help her with Olivette and sided with the Winchesters and even gave them the first blade so they could destroy them all. She says she gave him life and he owes her then blows up half the chatchkes in the throne room when she storms out. Dean says he’s thinking curse with these strange suicides. Two nuns talk about men. One, Isabelle, says she loved an artist named Piero who says he was her muse. She says she posed for him and felt so free with him.

She says she had never been close to a man before. Isabella says she can’t talk about what happened. The other nun says they’re supposed to come to the convent for a higher purpose but many chose it because of the things that overwhelmed them. Sam and Dean are in Massachusetts working the suicide case. The only commonality in the suicides is that they’re all Catholic. They wonder if it’s a possession but that seems strange. They stole Terry’s phone from evidence under FBI cover.

A guy leaves confession and sees a woman praying. It’s his wife. He helps her on with her jacket just before the presence heads for them. Later, the guy is getting a snack from the fridge when his wife creeps up on him and says he should come to bed. She picks up her big scissors and stabs him repeatedly after she calls him a liar. The presence leaves her and blows out of the house like a snake of smoke. She screams in horror at what she’s done.

Sam and Dean go see the woman’s priest about the murder. Dean says the last thing Lisa remembers is that Frank went to confession. They ask if Frank said anything about his wife. They tell him that all the victims went to his church and admits that they all went to confession recently but can’t tell them what they said. He introduces Sister Mathias and says she’ll help them. She asks why they’re investigating suicides and Dean asks her questions while Sam goes to look around.

Dean asks if she knows of any marital problems with Frank and Lisa – cheating or anything. Mathias says they always seemed devoted then asks if he’s looking for a motive. She says there were rumors. Mathias says he didn’t hear this from her but she heard it was true. Sam checks the candles for supernatural activity. Dean asks how Mathias ended up a nun. She says in her case, she felt she had no choice. She says her life was painful and hopeless. She says she needed something larger.

Mathias says she needed a mission of some sort. She asks if he has any idea what she’s talking about. Sam comes back and asks if there is a cemetery nearby. She says the entire church is built over a burial crypt. Sam asks if she’s noticed anything unusual like parts of the building that get cold or you feel like you’re not alone. Dean teases her and she asks if the FBI believes in ghosts. She says she has to get back to work and excises herself.

Dean tells Sam the nun was hot and had a thing for him. Sam reminds his brother she’s married to Jesus. Dean says all the cases seem to be about men doing their women wrong. Dean says the hot nun said Frank was doing her wrong. Dean says he thinks this is tied to confession. Rowena comes to see Crowley at his summons. She mocks him and then he says he can do something for him. He says he would hate if his own raison d’etre was taken from him and says she must be stifled.

She asks if he’ll go to the Grand Coven on her behalf. He says he did better and brought the grand coven to her. He has Olivette hauled in wearing chains and Rowena calls her an utter bitch. Olivette calls her a bottom feeder. Crowley has her in iron chains so she’s powerless and tells his mother to have fun. Olivette calls her loathsome and says Rowena lay with a non-magical man and hatched an evil spawn. Olivette calls her a thankless ass and says they thought she would mature.

Olivette says now Rowena is consorting with demons. Rowena says that’s quite a speech since she’s in her son’s palace. Shes says that spawn she mentioned is the king of hell and calls it a Cinderella story. She says Olivette is the prisoner of the baddest of the bad and his devoted mummy. Mathias asks Isabella if Piero is the reason she’s there. She says she was devoted to him and says they shared all their secrets. She says she was deeply in love with her. She says Piero told her that his work was powerful with her. We see she’s talking about Florence, Italy in 1520.

Mathias tells her nothing in her own life was ever that magical. Isabella says magic can be ruinous. She says she confessed her love to Piero and then he said he had feelings for her, but not love. She says he loved his art more than her. She says she fell into despair and stopped eating and sleeping. She says her family couldn’t take it any more. She says her father sent her to the convent to escape her sorrow. She says the servants drug her from the house at night.

Isabella says she only got away with her journal. Mathias says loneliness is hard. Rowena slaps Olivette who says Rowena is petulant, reckless and overrated. She says banishment was too good for her and she slaps her again then says Olivette was envious of her. Rowena says she was no threat to the coven and says they were dicking around instead of pursuing greatness. Rowena bloodies her nose and says she will get what she wants from her.

Olivette says the coven has almost no power from all the endless persecution orchestrated by a group of do-gooders dedicated to their downfall. She says they got the church whipped into a panic and that got them all killed. Olivette says they took their knowledge and relics and hid them in bunkers around the world. She says they were the Men of Letters. Rowena gasps. Dean goes to confession but doesn’t know the protocol. The priest is a little ruffled but says to go on.

Dean says his problem is the ladies. He says he’s not proud of this but says he lets them think they have a future with him when they don’t. He mentions Gina and says she was a good time but the sex, the lasagna didn’t lead to anything. He says he was seeing two to three girls at the same time sometimes in the same day. Dean says he needs to clean up his act and the priest assigns him some Hail Marys and Our Fathers and says to think about what he’s done with some serious soul searching.

Dean waits and the priest asks if there’s anything else on his mind. Dean says he doesn’t want to die yet and isn’t ready. The priest asks if he’s expecting to and Dean says always because of his line of work. He says he just tears around and thought he would haul ass until he ran out of gas. Dean says recent events made him realize he was closer to death than he thought and there are things he wants to experience differently or for the first time.

Dean says he’s starting to think maybe there’s more to it than he thought. He asks Dean if he truly believes in God and says that can be a comfort. Dean says he belives there’s a God but says he’s not sure God still believes in them. He leaves the booth and Isabella appears in a puff of smoke out of a nearby cabinet. They walk outside. Mathias lurks nearby watching them go. She heads to Isabella’s chamber and looks for her.

Isabella watches the priest and then swoops into him. Mathias looks at Isabella’s journal and reads a Latin phrase. Isabella wrote that in the convent her love for Piero turned to hatred. She wrote that she snuck out of the convent to see him and found Piero in bed with a woman so she took a knife and stabbed him repeatedly. Mathias closes the journal in horror. Mathias brings Dean and Sam in and says she never mentioned Isabella.

She says she has come across sad harmless spirits that then go to their final rest. Sam asks if she’s comfortable with ghosts. She says she is and the ones she’s encountered are harmless. She says Isabella is her friend and they had painful love lives in common. Mathias says Isabella showed up about three weeks ago from Tivoli with some of her family’s heirlooms. She says she read her journal and says it was given to her father after her death.

Sam says Isabella should be buried in Florence. She says the journal showed that Isabella was burned as a witch because the murder was so brutal. Dean wants to burn her journal because he thinks it’s her tether. Rowena beats on Olivette and says she’s still lying to her. Rowena says she let the Men of Letters pillage the greatest trove of magical treasures in the world. Olivette says the bunkers are wide spread and the buildings are powerfully warded.

She tells Rowena that the Winchesters are the only known survivors of the Men of Letters. Rowena says them again then tells Olivette it’s been pleasant but they’re done. She says the coven is no longer all-powerful so Olivette is no longer useful. She tells Rowena that witch on witch murder is anathema in the community. Rowen says she lived in fear for nothing.

She says Olivette ruined her life and will now pay with hers. Olivette tells her she doesn’t want to do this. Rowena gets a large metal bowl and chants over some ingredients. Olivette screams in pain and then Rowena stops and says she shouldn’t let her have the easy way out of death when there are better options. She chants something else while Olivette screams no. Rowena says she’s a genius. Mathias asks how Isabella could possess and kills these people. She asks if ghosts can be shot.

Dean says the gun is rock salt and can slow down a ghost. Sam reads the journal about Piero and Isabella’s great love. She says he used some of her blood to make pigment for paint. Dean and Mathias wander the church looking for Isabella. Dean has the dark detector thingy and gets a reading. She cut off a piece of her finger and told him to grind it up to make more pigment and make her one with the painting. Sam realizes a painting is the tether and looks for the one in the relics.

Isabella has been hiding in Mathias and starts to kick Dean’s butt after they find the priest dead. She says the priest had to die for forgiving Dean for unforgiveable things. Dean calls out to Sam to burn the journal. Mathias is about to stab him. Sam finds the painting and sets it on fire. Isabella is pulled out of Mathias and they see her screaming. She tells Mathias not to let them do this to her. She screams then goes up in a fireball puff.

Rowena shows Crowley that she turned Olivette into a hamster and has her in a cage. She’s running on a wheel. She tells him it’s poetic justice. She says she likes seeing her run in circles. Crowley says it’s a nice touch he might have thought of himself. He asks what she wants now. She says she heard the Winchesters are Men of Letters. Crowley says possibly and says that relationship is his matter and he won’t kill them. She calls him deary and says it’s whatever he says.

Sam drives them home and Dean asks who mixes blood and bone into paint and says no woman has done that for him. Sam says if he had listened to Dean and burned the journal instead of reading it, they wouldn’t have known how to kill her. Then he says Dean was in the confessional a long time and says he can always talk to him. He says he heard Mathias talking about hiding pain by going on missions. Sam says the mark is not a terminal diagnosis.

He tells Dean not to make peace with that idea. He says the find answers and that’s what they do. Dean says – okay Sammy. He tells Dean to say it like he means it and he does.

THE END!
