Switched At Birth returns to ABC Family tonight with an all new Monday October 26, season 4 finale called “And Always Searching for Beauty,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, in the season 4 finale, Bay (Vanessa Marano) is excited for her first art show.
On the last episode Bay took over as host for Lily’s baby shower after Regina had to tend to an emergency with Will; and sparks flew between Kathryn and Prof. Marillo at the party. On tonight’s episode as per the ABC Family synopsis, “in the Season 4 finale, Bay is excited for her first art show. Meanwhile, Daphne interviews for an internship near Quinn, causing friction with Mingo; Kathryn’s frustration with John escalates when he storms out of a negotiation; and John and Kathryn confront Regina about Eric’s secret.”

#SwitchedAtBirth starts with Kathryn, Bay and John asking Regina why she let a fugitive move into their house. She says she just found out a month ago – she says he made a fresh start and didn’t want to tell anyone that Eric had a criminal past. She says he took Will out of a dangerous situation and was trying to do the right thing. Kathryn says they could be in trouble because he was there. Regina asks for time to sort it out and John says one day.
Kathyrn says she can’t defend her this time. Regina tells Bay she’s not mad at her for telling but Bay sasses her. Daphne talks to Mingo about the Chinese mission and practices for her interview. Mingo says isn’t she a shoo in since Gabe has a connection to her. Daphne is excited and Mingo wishes her luck. Bay is setting up for her show and Toby is there with her. She goes to chat up the gallery owner Matthew. The guy seems perplexed about all of this.
He says she can serve what she wants and price them as she wants. He says to just go crazy. It seems off. John tells Kathryn they need to get through the closing so the financial mess is done. Tom shows up and John introduces him to Kathryn. He has a lawyer with him – Craig. Kathryn seems out of sorts and we see a flashback to her kissing Craig. They give John a revised offer based on the age of the building. The offer is 30% less and Craig says the inspection shows there is a lot of work needed.
John says it’s the original offer or nothing. He walks away from the table. Regina tells Eric that Will deserves both parents and says he needs to parent with Hope. Eric says he can’t stand Hope and she doesn’t deserve to be around Eric. Regina says she’s trying to keep he and will together and keep him out of jail. Regina says this is not easy for her. Eric says Hope hates him and won’t go for it but she says she’ll work on Hope.
Bay calls Kendall Booth, an art critic, an invites her to a show. She’s at home grabbing bottles of wines and snacks for the show. She pretends to be someone else and invites her to the show. She gets a yes and is thrilled. Quinn tells Daphne he’s the one interviewing her and not Gabe. That throws her off. Daphne says she doesn’t want things to be weird and he asks why they would be and says all the other stuff is behind them.
John rants to Kathryn about them changing the deal and she says he should not have walked away from the table. He says she’s overreacting and she says he needs to clean up this mess. She asks when is it her turn to stomp out of the room then she does. Eric watches Regina and Hope talking in a park. He is annoyed and walks over. Eric and Hope bicker a bet. Hope says she needs money and Regina offers her $50k to buy her out. Hope agrees to meet them back there.
Regina tells Eric he has to pack and get ready to go. Kathryn meets with Craig and she’s looking hot. She tells him John doesn’t know she’s there. Daphne tells Mingo she got the internship. Then she admits that Quinn is coming on the trip. Mingo asks how she knows that and she says he interviewed her. She says he took over for Gabe and he asks if Quinn is the one that gave her the job and says Quinn is trying to get into her pants and calls her naïve.
She says Quinn promised to keep it professional and she says Quinn is coming to Bay’s opening because Gabe and Melody are bringing him. Daphne promises to tongue kiss him in front of Quinn to prove she’s with him. Mingo is not pleased. Bay reviews her art before the show. Kathryn tells Craig the 30% less offer was not fair and he says he wasn’t expecting John to walk out. He offers a deal for 15% instead. Daphne introduces Quinn to Mingo.
Mingo asks why Quinn doesn’t sign and then Quinn talks about hiking with her in China. Mingo and Quinn get in a pissing match. Mingo tells Daphne the guy is into her. Craig asks Kathryn what she’s been up to the past three years. She says she wrote a memoir about the switch then wrote an erotic novel. He says he knows that and saw it at the airport. He says he read it. He says he almost reached out to her and she says that he should have.
Bay sees Emmett and they share an awkward wave. The art critic shows up and Bay gives her a tour. Melody asks Emmett if he’s seen Travis. She asks what’s going on between them and he tells her the guy is into Bay. She asks didn’t he move on from Bay. They argue over Travis liking Bay. He thinks Travis betrayed him and she’s taking his side. Melody says if he cares about Bay he needs to let her go. The gallery owner spots the critic and he says he agreed to pretend it’s a real show, but this is enough.
Bay is stunned and says she doesn’t know what it is. He says this is a rental, not a show. He says he hasn’t seen her work before now and doesn’t like her calling his colleagues. She says she doesn’t have a boyfriend and says it’s Travis. She’s shocked. Eric is packed to go and gives her the paperwork and she says she’ll wire the money. He says he remembers how beautiful she was the first time he saw her. Will shows up and they freak.
He says he snuck out of the motel when she went to pay the bill so he can say goodbye to Regina. He says he doesn’t want to go to Atlanta. Eric tells Will to check his room and he tells Regina they’re going to run. He says he can’t raise his son with the woman. He kisses her as Regina begs him to reconsider. He tells her to lie and says what she needs to do to protect herself. He takes Will and goes. Regina breaks down sobbing.
Kathryn makes it to the show and John asks if it’s a new dress. He says she deserves some retail therapy. She says she had a drink with Craig and says she handled it. Kathryn says they need the deal to close and John says it wasn’t just about the deal. John asks if she’s having a midlife crisis then says it’s embarrassing. She tells him the deal she got and he asks what she had to do to make that happen. Kathryn says she just talked to him.
She says he should thank her for saving their asses. Daphne approaches Quinn and he says he likes her portrait. Daphne asks if he gave her the internship because she’s qualified then says she has a BF and Quinn would be her boss there. Mingo walks over and Daphne asks him to give them a minute. Quinn mocks Mingo for being a muscle head and says maybe Daphne wants more. Mingo walks off mad and Quinn says this won’t work out since it’s too messy.
Daphne says it’s not and says she just wants to do the job. She says she can help those people and asks him to let her come and do the work but he says no. Travis shows up with flowers for Bay who’s mad and asks why he keeps doing this. He says the guy wasn’t supposed to tell her. She says she feels like a five year old who found out her parents paid kids to come to her party. Travis says she had a hard year and he wants to help. She says she has to earn what she gets.
Bay says he has to stop but he says he can’t because he’s in love with her. She says that’s ridiculous. She walks downstairs and he follows. She says they both had their heartbroken at the same time. He says he woke up one day and realized he was in love with her. She says he can’t be. He says she’s weird and brave and smart and beautiful. Bay says she couldn’t do that to Mary Beth or Emmett. He says they are excuses and she should decide how she feels. He kisses her.
He says don’t tell me that’s not real then walks away. After the show, Bay sits and Emmett approaches her. He asks if she’s okay. She says it’s been a hard year and he says she got rejected from art school, took the fall for a felony, went through date rape issues and got dumped by her idiot BF who should have stood by her. She says Travis rented the space and it was all a lie – there was no show. Emmett says she will have an art show one day. He says it takes time.
She tells him Travis think he’s in love with her and he says he knows. He says he doesn’t like anyone else thinking about her like that but says he has to let her go. He says if she wants to move on with Travis he’ll accept it. She tells him she doesn’t know what she wants but is proud of her. He hugs her. Mingo tells Daphne she’s had doubts about them and now Quinn makes things worse. She says Quinn gets to see the world and change people’s lives and that’s the life she wants.
Mingo says she has a plane ticket and can go to China on her own and have an adventure. She says she’s going to do that and he says good. She says he’s the kindest person she’s met and the only BF she’s ever had that took sign lessons for her. Mingo says they should take a break this summer and says China will change her and that’s great but he doesn’t want to force anything. He says let’s see how we feel in the Fall. She says she’ll miss him.
By comes home and finds Regina crying on the couch. She says she’s sorry she missed the show. Bay says it’s okay and Regina says she’s made mistakes but wanted it all to work out. She says she thought Eric was her second chance. Bay says she’s made bad choices in love too. Bay tells Regina she’ll miss him but it will get better. Regina and Bay hug. Kathryn comes home and John apologizes. Regina and Bay come out and Regina says Eric and Will are gone and she doesn’t know where.
The cops bust in on them with guns out and they tell them they have a warrant for Eric’s arrest. John asks why they knocked the door down and John asks if he knows who he is. The policeman says sit down or be cuffed. John threatens to have him fired. The guy cuffs him and Bay comes in to ask what’s going on. Bay says Toby texted and their son is having a baby. Regina tells Kathryn and Bay to go. John is mad that they left without him. Bay fills Daphne in on the cops and the kiss with Travis.
She says it was a great kiss but her head is spinning. Daphne says she should come with her to China. She says she can sketch, they can eat crazy food and says they can have an adventure. She says the switchsters can go. Bay agrees. Kathryn comes in and Daphne asks if things are okay. Regina and John show up then and Kathryn tells them all to come on. They go into the room and see Toby holding the baby. He hands his son to John to hold. John says he’s perfect.
Kathryn says they’re grandparents and John says he can’t believe it. They kiss and reminisce about having Toby there. Daphne asks for a turn with the baby. Toby says his name is Carlton Summers Kennish. Daphne snaps a selfie of the family with the new baby. 10 months later in China, we see Bay giving a tattoo at a parlor and speaking Chinese. The woman asks her to say it in English and Bay says she’s a bad ass warrior. Bay takes a call that disturbs her. She runs out of the shop.
She runs to the clinic where Daphne works. A little boy touches her hair and his parents tell him to stop then tell her he’s never seen red hair before. Bay runs up and finds her and says they have to go home now. What a cliffhanger!
