Season Two of “the Affair” it seems has given us more points of view. Last season was all about Noah and Alison. And how they deal with their scandalous relationship. Yet their affair didn’t just affect them. There were at least two other people left adrift in the finale and let’s not forget Noah was also arrested for murder. So it was about time that someone else wade in on what happened and it was good to see Helen tell her side of the story.

Coming from a place of sadness and possible some leftover bitterness towards her husband for how things ended, Helen was introduced as a woman merely going through her life without a thought of what it might mean. Take for her instance the revenge sex. Because it’s impossible to call anything else after she slept with her soon to be ex-husband’s best friend.

But Max of all people? Helen never once appeared to be interested in him prior to her divorce although he made his feelings about her pretty clear. Therefore, she’s found someone that could easily become invested in her meanwhile all she feels about him is that he’s good friend to her but not that great of at much else.

And surprisingly Max was a better friend to the both of them without Helen noticing. Last summer, despite coveting his friend’s wife, he had tried to be a voice of reason with Noah. He told the other man that there aren’t a lot of women out there like Helen just waiting around. Yet Noah had refused to listen to him at the time and instead he decided to choose Alison.

Alison who in his mind came across as dangerous and sexy. And more importantly new. However, it wasn’t Alison that showed up at Noah’s cell door in the near future. That was Helen who by the way also hired him a lawyer.

Now because each episode is broken down into different point of views, we saw Helen struggling with an ex-husband that seemingly didn’t care about all the pain he caused. And then turning the same subject around, we then saw Noah trying to make the divorce as painless as possible for his family.

Noah wants joint custody and, unlike how it was shown from Helen’s perspective, that wasn’t one of his duties he tried to pawn off on someone else.

Actually he seemed to desperately want to be there for his kids. Yet he’s not passing off the blame which is important in a divorce because often children need someone to blame. And in Noah’s case, he told his youngest son about that it wasn’t Helen’s fault. She hadn’t done anything wrong but he did go on to confess that he fell in love with someone else.

So the situation is confusing. Helen is either not giving him enough credit or Noah’s version is skewed because of guilt. But no matter who’s remembering the divorce, the one thing they could agree on is that their kids were taking it hard. Whitney was gearing up for college and so she essentially blocked out anything that couldn’t be used for a college essay.

Then there’s Martin. He has sadly reverted back into his shell. He was finally coming around last summer after spending a lot of time working alongside Alison’s husband but that’s probably a sore topic now. And best forgotten.

As for the younger two, they’re usually pretty quiet or crying. Apparently some of the other mothers at Stacey’s ballet class have started to talk and the line they’re taking is “how could Helen not have known?” And one mother even had the audacity to ask Helen if she had sixth sense about anything that in hindsight should have been a warning.

Thus the worst part was not the affair. It was the divorce!

And looking at it from both sides, there’s no one that has walked away unaffected.

THE END!
