Tonight’s episode of The Americans kicks off with Phillip getting a new assignment from Gabriel: Max Sampson, Isaac Bralit, and Ted Pascal. They are all working for the organization. Isaac is a saint on paper, his wife passed away and he raises money for cancer. Ted Pascal is probably their best bet, because he is desperate for money. The handler warns him that the CIA is going to be watching every one on that list like a hawk, and they are going to have to be extra careful getting close to any of them.
Elizabeth is out walking the streets with a new spy named Hans and training him for the center, she is quizzing him on surveillance. She laughs at him and her tooth still hurts from her run-in with the FBI agents, but she can’t go to the dentist because it will send out red flags and she could be caught. The spy flirts with Liz and tells her that she “always looks good.”
At home that night Elizabeth tries to talk to Phil about getting Paige a birthday present – she saw a necklace that she thinks she will like for her 16th birthday. Phillip doesn’t care what they get her. Elizabeth changes the subject and tries to talk about Hans flirting with her, she says that she “shot him down.” Phillip says that it is her job to recruit men, and she shouldn’t be shutting down his advances. He snaps at her that he knows she met with Gabriel about recruiting Paige behind his back.
At work, Stans co-workers are still checking dentist offices looking for the woman that they had a run-in with. Liz and Phillip head undercover to meet with a real estate agent and look at a house. Phil comes up with an excuse to go back upstairs and begins rifling through the home office – he plants a bug in the telephone and in the briefcase. Ted Pascal arrives, it is his house that they are looking at. He says he forgot something and heads upstairs and finds Phillip in his office. Phil lies and says that he is just looking to see what the heating ducts look like.
Arkady reveals to Oleg that his father pulled some strings and sent him paperwork to pull him out of the US. Arkady tells Oleg that it is up to him if he wants to be transferred. Oleg reminds him that his father is close to Anthrapov – Arkady tells him to let him know what he decides.
Phillip and Elizabeth are driving around listening to the bug that they planted on Ted’s briefcase. Elizabeth realizes that they are being tailed by a car – they think that it is the CIA. Phillip tells her to take another turn to see if the car continues to follow them. They drive around for hours being tailed, Elizabeth drives through a parking lot in the dark and Phillip jumps out of the car while it is moving without the car behind them even noticing. Phillip gives her an address to go to – and says he will see her at home.
Paige is at home gathering the laundry, and she finds a naked picture of Stan’s wife in her brother Henry’s room. Henry screams that Paige is disgusting. Meanwhile, Phillip rushes to a pay phone and calls an operator and gives them the same address that he gave to Elizabeth. A man walks past Elizabeth’s window while she is driving slowly and tosses a walky-talky inside. She turns it on and a man starts giving her directions, telling her to turn right down another street.
Phillip heads home, and finds Paige sitting in the livingroom watching TV. She says that she “couldn’t sleep.” Phillip sits down with her and tries to talk to her, Paige reassures her that she doesn’t mind her parents working so late.
At Stan’s office, they are radioing the agents that are tailing Elizabeth. Stan wants to make a move on her and bring her in – but the CIA told them to wait and see where Elizabeth leads them. Stan and his men decide to go pick her up anyways. But, the woman that Liz called for help kicks her plan in to motion and they interfere with the FBI agent’s radio frequencies and turn off the traffic light – causing them to all collide with each other. Liz gets away undetected.
Elizabeth arrives at home and Phillip tries to kiss her, but she winces in pain because of her tooth. He takes her in to the basement and gives her a shot of alcohol, then he proceeds to pull her tooth out with pliers while she writhes in pain. Back at the FBI office Stan is retracing the routes that Elizabeth took, he tells his co-worker that “they sure are hard to get.”
At Martha’s house, she is pressuring Phillip about taking in foster kids. He says that he told her over and over that he doesn’t want any children. Martha thinks that taking in a child on a trial basis could help him change his mind, and they have so much to offer needy children.
Elizabeth heads to the park to train Hans some more. Phillip heads to Gabriel’s to fill him in on what happened while they were trying to watch Ted Pascal. Gabriel thinks that they should back off – getting Ted isn’t worth getting caught. They wind up arguing over Paige being recruited. Phillip reminds Gabriel that Paige grew up in the US and she “isn’t equipped to deal with this shit.”
Later that night Phillip and Elizabeth head back out to spy on Ted Pascal. Phillip warns her not to get too close, they drive by to get pictures and realize that the girl in Ted’s car is the daughter of Isaac Brelit – the head of the Afghan committee.
