RECAP:
The wives and their families have officially moved to Houston. However, on tonight’s new episode, it looks like the ladies might have bitten off more than they can chew.
Texas is a completely different environment. From the food to the Junior League meetings, and the one thing that the ladies were looking forward – change – happened to come in the form of an unpleasant surprise.
The ladies believed their husbands were all going to get their individual chances to shine. And, sadly, they found out the whole new set of 9 astronauts has already been picked. See, the first astronauts were Team Mercury. Yet not of all of Mercury has gone up on into space. So by bringing even more people then there’s a chance men like Marge’s husband will never go up.
And so that’s got to hurt!
Marge and her husband did everything in their power to make him fit enough to go up. But what with his heart defect (that NASA had always known about) and more guys to add to the group that are willing to take his place – word came through that Deke Slayton was officially grounded. And afterwards he felt everything he had worked for was now pointless.
Naturally, Marge was distraught when she heard. Earlier, she had taken out all of her pent-up anger on the Gemini wives. Though after a while she just stopped coming outside all-together.
Eventually, the other wives even had to buy her a dress in order to entice her to come out on the town with them. Houston was, after all, throwing a huge gala and it was the astronauts and their wives that were going to be the stars of the show. So, whether she liked or not, Marge’s friends weren’t going to give up on her.
And, as it turns out, the US needed some good propaganda.
President Kennedy had made an announcement over various radio and TV stations about a situation that would go on to be known as the Cuban Missile crisis. So the guys were told to look good in front of the cameras and give Americans a sense of hope. Instead, however, they chose to send their wives to the gala while they stood back to drink.
The guys were apparently upset that they were no longer part of the military.
Hence, with everyone fearing war on horizon, a group of soldiers were told they had to sit this one out. And that’s how ended up drinking to their heart’s content.
Though, in the interim, their wives were busy trying to put on a brave face. Trudy was worried about her husband so she left the party early in case he tries to call the house. And Marge finally vented. To her, it didn’t matter that everyone believed the world was about to end. What mattered was that she felt her husband got cheated.
So when she saw Dunk at the party, her plan was to take him to task for benching her husband. But what stopped her was his news. Dunk told her that they named Deke as Chief Astronaut. Meaning he was now in charge of the others even if he never goes up.
And as that news had suddenly brightened up both Deke and Marge’s night, this missile crisis ended up having the funniest effect on Louise.
Louise and Max have been dancing around their feelings for quite some time. Though they do truly seem to care for each other. Thus, on what could be their last night on earth, they went off together.
Nothing seedy. Especially when it comes to someone like Louise. So it was just to the stables for some conversation and a dance. But, all the same, that moment of theirs was very telling. As if they didn’t want to spend time with anyone else.
And, tonight, Jo found out who her real friends were.
Junior League may have denied her acceptance but her fellow Mercury wives were there to pick up the pieces.
