#BastardExecutioner begins with Wilk waking beside Jessamy who was watching him sleep. She says he’s lovely when he sleeps. He asks if she’s worried about something and says she seems vigilant. She says a devoted wife should be that way to keep her blessings in good order. Wilk says his blessings are not in good order yet. She says his spirit will settle then says Luca will settle into his profession but Wilk says he doesn’t want Luca in this line of work. She says it’s his birthright just as it was Maddy’s.

Isabel is with Love and she hands her the king’s proclamation for reeve to post. She has to tell the shire of her “pregnancy.” Isabel asks if she can take the new girl to Glyn Goch to pick berries and ove says she wants to go along as well. Reeve comes to see Milus with a royal matter. The Claras slip out with a little person and a cage of rats. He finds Milus looking exhausted and he tells the reeve to leave it to his imagination. He shows Milus the proclamation from Windsor that Love wants posted in the square.

Nora works by the fire and looks at her hand. A splinter is in the center and she pulls it out. It looks more like a black rock. Her hand heals itself after she removes it. Wilk goes to Marshal who shows him a stack of swords and shields he’s stolen to give to the rebels. Jessamy asks where Wilk is going and if there will be anyone pretty there. Marshal says only quarrymen, no one fair. They ride out. Jessamy watches with suspicion as they go. Reeve posts the notice.

Wilk and Marshal nod at Ash and the others who are working in the muck with their feet chained. The people ask the priest to read the notice to them. He says it’s blessed news – the Baron left Lady Love with an heir for the shire. Everyone but Jessamy seems pleased. Wilk and Marshal ride into the woods and are approached by two guards. They curse. They ask where they’re going and they tell them they’re going for sharpening stones. The knights warn them about the rebels that attack there.

They insist on riding to accompany them and protect them since the punisher is valuable. The cart hits a rock and one knight asks what grain rattles like steel. He sees the swords and then asks who barters for stolen weapons. They grapple and Wilk kills the one saving Marshal’s life. Marshal tells Wilk he should go back without him since the other guard will know Huxley was with them. They make a plan to slip in at vespers, take their revenge, then make their escape.

Love and Isabel tell the guards they don’t need them shadowing them while they pick berries. Cormac tells the Archdeacon how he recommends they travel in their search for the last skin they need. He says the deacon should search castle Ventris while he searches elsewhere. Nora goes to the Mute and hands him the stones. She says they will begin their search at the castle. He says he will ready his service. The Mute goes through the web of hanging snakes and into a cave.

He goes to a cage and kneels before it. In the ancestral ruins near Ventrishire, Marshal and Wilk meet the rebels to hand the weapons over and explain their plans to flee. They ask if they can take refuge with them once they leave the shire and the Wolf agrees. Wilk asks about the attack on the Baroness’ carriage. He says that was not his direction but says rebellion can lead to chaos. He says they’ll wait for them there until after dark. He asks the Wolf for his word never to harm Love and he gives it.

Love and Isabell stand in a field looking over the shire and eating berries. Love says her spirit aches for adventure and travel. She and Isabel are grabbed by men in the trees and hauled away. It’s the Wolf that took her and he said he heard she wished to speak to him. He tells her Isabel is safe. She says being bagged and carted does not build trust. He calls her sister and she says half-sister then says her father had poor taste in women before he met her mother.

He says he thought talking at their great-grandfather’s fortress would give her comfort. They trade barbs and she calls him Griffy and reminds him that he was well loved as a secret son by their father. He says she’s still tiny and all spit and wit. She smiles and says he as well. She says she wishes they were not meeting over bloodshed. She says no one is aware of their ties but Isabel would recognize him. She picks at his beard and says it’s not clean but he still has the face of that teen boy.

He says that boy has died many deaths since and she says that’s the nature of rebellion. She tells him things must change. She says an independent Wales is her dream too but it won’t come blade against blade but at a negotiation table. Griff says he didn’t start this revolution – Longshanks did. She says he leads them now but he says he’s more legend than law and says the attack on her was not his doing and says many attacks come without his order.

He says he needs money to organize the men to make them organized soldiers. She asks if he wants her to fund the revolution. He says he knows she hid family heirlooms from Ventriss. He says he knows what’s in the crypt and she asks why not just take it. He says he’s not a thief and those things are sacred to her. He asks for one thing to fund the army. She asks if he was there when her husband was killed. He says he was but says another took his life – a warrior that once service Eric, an honorable man.

He says he will wait for her in the crypt but if she cannot help, he won’t hold it against her. She asks if that will end the talk of peace, but he’s gone already – slipped away. Wilk comes home and Jessamy says supper is almost ready. He tells her to sit and listen and Luca too. He asks Jessamy why she clings to the lie of his false name. He tells her to stop then says he’s not her husband nor an executioner and the three of them now it as does Milus.

He says Milus holds this over his head and forces him to commit sin. She says he’s pious and serves God. He says he honored a knight this morning, one of the men who killed his wife and unborn child. He says revenge brought him here and why he stayed. Jessamy says it’s madness. He says they have to leave before word of the death of the noble reaches the shire. Jessamy asks why he’s doing this to them and she cries. He says he’s sorry she was pulled into it and says he’s grateful she helped him.

Wilk says he needs to protect her and she says this is their home and their children. He says if she wants to save their children, she must do what he says. He says pack only what is needed plus some food and water. He says be ready to depart after dark. She cries then walks out the door and he sighs. Luca says he’ll pack what’s needed and make sure his mother is ready. He asks if he’ll leave them once they’re safe and not be his father anymore.

Wilk tells him he will never be his father of birth, but he won’t leave him and calls him son then hugs the boy. Marshal tells Ash that he’s to take Jessamy and the kids away from their before the fight when they take their vengeance. Marshal says they will kill all the guards because they know all were involved. Ash looks worried. Love and Isabel walk back from the ruins and Isabel promises to keep her confidence. The guards ride up on them and Love says she was showing Isabel a childhood spot of hers.

She tells them there is a clearing with a deep bog and strange mud. They ask the knights to take them home. The reeve comes asking for Wilk and tells Luca that Milus needs him on a pressing matter. Luca says he will. Wilk explains to Berber that Huxley left with them and questions will arise. Berber has been put to task transcribing documents. Wilk tells him the plans for revenge and then to flee. Berbe says he’ll be ready. Nora shows up at the church where the priest is speaking.

He tells her there is no market today and she says she’s there to see him. He tells the group of children to think about their lesson and then speaks to Nora privately. She hands him a stack of black rocks and he says he doesn’t deal in remedies. She says they are to warn and says a danger comes to the Shire, a darkness. He tosses down the rocks and says it’s not wise to show her pagan side so openly. She quotes the bible to him and then she gasps as another of the rocks works its way out of her flesh.

He sees the skin heal. She tells him he will know the evil when he sees it and says God will guide him to his task. She walks back to the Mute and leaves with him. Reeve tells Milus that he found Jessamy but not the Punisher. Milus tells Love that a rebel ordered the death of Trula – he says it was the Wolf. Milus tells her he promised Pryce swift trial and punishment of this godless murderer. She has no choice but to agree. Isabel says the Archdeacon of Windsor has arrived.

She and Milus share a surprised look. Wilk and Marshal make their final plans to escape after getting their vengeance. Wilk hopes to get Reeve to challenge him to a fight to get things started. Luca tells them they wait and warns him a way but Reeve is there and says Milus wants a word with him. He sees Jessamy who smiles strangely at him. He has no choice but to go. Love introduces Father Ruskin to the Archdeacon. Milus says he’s there to examine accounts.

The Archdeacon says that’s the official reason, but he just wants to meet the congregation. Love asks him to give Mass and he agrees. Milus excuses himself. Sir Absalom is there too and Love says they prepared the guest chambers for the Deacon and Ruskin says Absalom can bunk with him. Reeve asks Milus what Jessamy spoke to him of and if it was criminal but Milus says it was marital. He tells him to stay outside the door. Milus goes into the Punisher chamber and tells them Jessamy came to him.

He says she told him some of the knights made lustful comments towards her and he acted in revenge. He says she asked him to confine him until his mind is restored. Milus says he knows who they are and Marshal asks what proof he has. He says he knew Wilkin long before he was Wilkin the farmer and knew Marshal. He says he knew he was not the Punisher and the rest of the scheme was obvious. Wilk says Milus condemned his brother and Milus says his brother was a coward and annoyance.

Milus says his proposition is this – he says they want revenge for what happened in the village and he wants clever men who will serve him beyond the bounds of the law. He says most of his knights are hirelings who work for pay not for loyalty to the manor. He calls in Norton. He asks if Norton was there in the village and says he saw him put a blade in many innocent villagers and burned homes. Milus knocks the man to the floor and says they can torture and kill him.

He says he will see Huxley’s blood does not land on his hands. Milus says he is an offering and it will be a final one. He says they will not touch the Reeve or the other man and says he and the bandits will serve him and says they have much to accomplish. Milus says if they disappear or disobey, there will be consequences. He says how heartbroken Love would be if her growing affection was born on a bed of Godless deception.

Milus then says Wilk’s wife is quite mad and says he should be concerned about that. Marshal chains up Norton and Wilk tells him to ask the question. Marshal asks if Wilk will bring the others and he says he’ll go get them. Wilk leaves him alone with Norton. Love goes to the crypt under the castle. She lights a couple of torches then opens a secret chamber in a crypt and unlocks it with a key. She pulls out a jeweled bracelet and says – please forgive me.

She then opens a door to a secret passage and goes down into it. She sees her half-brother waiting. He says he’s glad she came. She shows him the confession of Lady Trula and says he did it on the orders of the Wolf. He says those were not his orders and she asks why he would lie and condemn himself. He says he can’t know why and asks her forgiveness for pulling her into it. She says she comes to the cause willingly but says she needs the big strong Wolf.

She says the man will be in their charge soon and says she will have the truth of it from him. She hands over the jewels. She says they need to help each other. She says to find a smith to separate all the stones to get more worth from it. She asks for his word that they do it together and he says an alliance of noble and outlaw if poetic but she says poetry won’t keep their necks from the ax and says they must proceed with caution. He promises her and they hug.

She says may the savior keep him safe and he reminds her that Jesus was a rebel too. Father Ruskin blows out candles in the chapel and then finds Absalom in his quarters with a bag that clanks of steel. Ruskin has the rocky thorn from Nora in his hand. Looks like that man is the evil. Ash, Berber and the others hear a scream and find Marshal torturing Norton. He wants the name of the man who killed his wife. He’s taken an eye and several teeth.

Ash begs them to stop and says they are family. Marshal tells Berber that Sir Denley murdered his mother and says Ventris himself slit his boy’s throat. Marshal says he’s getting what they want – the names of those who wronged them. He says the knight must give the name of who killed his wife Eva. Marshal says if he’s to be crushed under Milus’ thumb, he needs to know the name. Wilk steps back to let him proceed with Norton.

The man screams and then says Sir Locke put the blade in her belly and throat. Marshal is done then and tosses the torture implement aside. Norton looks at Wilk and says – please. He takes up a knife and stabs it into the man’s chest. The life’s blood pours out of him. He closes the man’s eyes. He drops the bloody knife. He tells them they have vengeance. In her cave, Nora looks at the skin map and star at the root.

The Mute opens the locked box deep in the cave. Inside is a uniform that looks like it’s from the Crusades. He picks up a sword. Wilk sits brooding in the granary when Love spots him. She says they find each other in the most unlikely places. He agrees. He’s not very talkative. He says God might not recognize him lately so he’s not in the chapel. Love sits by him and asks why. He says his heart feels unfamiliar as if it beats in another man. He says his hands have no warmth or truth.

He apologizes and says he’s just very tired. She says he’s very sad too. She takes his hand and holds it. She says he’s a true and good man and God will see grace in him. He says she is so kind to him and so beautiful. He touches her hand and says he feels like the only thing that has truth is when he’s with her. He says she sees him. He says when she touched his wound, he has been drawn to her. He looks down and away from her then stands to go and apologizes. He says he’s drunk on fatigue.

Love tells him she’s not offended and he says she’s forgiving. He tells her good night but she says she saw the birth of a boy when she touched his wound that night. She says it was a vision and was vivid and clear and says she thinks he saw it too. He says he felt only the pain of his wound. He leaves her.

THE END!
