“The Bold and the Beautiful” spoilers hint that B&B fans can expect some major drama thanks to the revelation of Maya’s (Karla Mosley) big secret. If you haven’t heard by now, Nicole (Reign Edwards) revealed that Maya wasn’t always her sister. It turns out transgender Maya was once Nicole’s brother, Myron! There were rumors floating around that suggested this possibility, but few thought a transgender storyline would ever really happen. After all, “The Bold and the Beautiful” is arguably the most straight-laced of the four main soaps. Lately, a sleepy hostile takeover story has been as exciting as it gets. Now that USA Today has confirmed the news, the debut of a transgender character seems to have stirred viewers from their slumber.
It’s too soon to say how the new storyline will affect the ratings. Most B&B fans are still in a state of shock. CBS says that “The Bold and the Beautiful” is the only current show on broadcast or cable TV to include a transgender character in the regular cast. However, the shock is mostly stemming from the fact that B&B writers are changing nearly everything we thought we knew about Maya.
When Maya first came on the scene, we learned that Maya had a daughter she gave up for adoption before she entered prison. So the sex change storyline contradicts Maya’s histoty. Bill (Don Diamont) even did a background check on Maya and he told her that he knew all about her past. Bill even specifically referenced the fact that Maya had been pregnant. So what gives? It looks like B&B writers will have to do some history tweaking if they expect this storyline to be even remotely plausible. Perhaps we’ll learn that Maya didn’t really give birth. Maybe they’ll say she had a baby, but she didn’t HAVE a baby. Myron could have fathered the child before the sex change. Then again, they might go with the idea that Maya stole the baby. When you’re making it up as you go along, there are plenty of options to choose from.
There’s also the issue of how Maya paid for a sex change. Maya’s unsupportive parents obviously didn’t foot the bill for the procedure. Maya was homeless and broke for quite a while before she met Rick (Jacob Young). It’s possible that Myron spent whatever savings he had to become Maya. That might explain why Maya was living on the street. Whatever the case, it seems B&B writers will be forced to fudge a little on the past for the sake of the future.
Karla Mosley noted that she was thankful for the opportunity to break new ground with the role. “It’s a real opportunity to educate our viewers here and all over the world,” Mosley said. Time will tell if the Myron-turned-Maya storyline will be a success, but one thing’s for sure: they’re finally putting the “bold” in “Bold and the Beautiful.”
So B&B fans, what do you think about the news that Maya used to be a man? When Rick gets updates on Maya’s past, how will he react? Is a transgender storyline is a good idea for the CBS soap?
