Tonight on ABC Family their hit drama The Fosters returns with an all new Monday August 10, season 3 Episode 9 called “Idyllwild,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, the family visit Brandon [David Lambert] to attend his music competition, and secrets surface during the trip.
On the last episode, Callie viewed Rita differently after meeting Rita’s daughter, who had an uneasy bond with her mom. Elsewhere, Stef uncovered a new lead in the hit-and-run accident; and Brandon talked to his mothers about the tension he was sensing in their home. Did you watch the last episode? On tonight’s episode as per the ABC Family Synopsis, “the family visit Brandon to attend his music competition, and secrets surface during the trip. Meanwhile, Callie questions Carmen and Brooke’s motives; and Mike observes something that may bolster Stef’s theory about the hit-and-run accident.”

#TheFosters starts with the girls talking about Carmen deciding to stay in high school for now. She says she’s shaken up about Rita hitting her but Callie calls her a liar. Callie asks Carmen why she’s turning on Rita after all she’s done for her. Stef shows Mike surveillance footage and shares her theory about Joe and the accident when he was supposed to be at work. Mike says there’s no way to connect him to Olson. AJ gives Lena a hug – he’s going with Mike who just got his foster license. They take off.
Mariana says this sucks since Jesus and Callie are both gone. Lena says Callie’s social worker called and wants to talk to them. Brendon’s music teacher tells him to embrace his ego and win this thing. Stef talks to Callie about the social worker’s concerns. She says hopefully she can come home soon. Callie asks if she’s heard about Rita and says Carmen is lying. Stef says to keep her head down and not get into it with these girls so they can finalize the adoption. She tells Callie she loves her.
Mariana listens to Jennaa talk about her new GF and is grossed out. Brendon stops by to chat up Lena then goes to work. Jennaa proposes a couple’s getaway up near Idlewild. Callie takes out the trash that night when a car comes at her and tries to run her down. She runs for the house and shuts the gate then runs inside. It’s crazy chick Brook’s BF. Mike takes AJ to see his grandmother who has had a stroke. He introduces her to Mike as his new foster dad. She tells him to take good care of AJ.
Callie goes to talk to Carmen and says she did research and found out they drug test you before they let you in the Army. She says she thinks she was worried she would test positive and asks why she would use when she was so close to her goal. Carmen says she was having a bad day and wanted to get high. She asks why lie about Rita. She says if she told on Brook she would tell about the drugs and she could never join the Army. She says the Army is her only way out.
Callie tells her that she’s ruining Rita’s life and she says she can tell the social worker that she was sneaking around with Brandon and ruin her adoption. Carmen says she will take her down with her. Brandon has the pianist playing the piece he wrote about falling in love with someone you can never be with. The guy can’t get it and Brandon is totally frustrated. Lena and Monte are at the cabin before the others. Brandon rants about the competition and says he can’t play his own piece.
He says he doesn’t have the reach since his hand got crushed. Callie reveals that she recorded Carmen admitted that Rita didn’t hit her. Brook stops by to threaten her again. Mike asks Todd to stick around for AJ but he’s mad that Mike has taken his place and he takes off. Mike tries to talk to him again then wishes him luck. He notices the guy with him and gave him a hard look. Mike goes back inside and picks up the pen that Todd signed with so he’ll have his fingerprints.
Lena and Monte drink wine and laugh and Lena asks how she likes Jennaa. Monte says dating a woman is different and she thinks Jenna is getting more serious faster but she likes the sex with a woman. Lena says maybe she needs more time and Monte says she may not be the woman for her. Jenna shows up then and asks what they’re giggling over. She sits down and they pour her a glass of wine. It’s time for the competition. Callie, AJ, Mariana and the others are there to hear Brandon’s composition.
Jenna shows up and says Monte left because they broke up. Lena and Stef are surprised to hear this. Mike asks Stef what she decided on Olsen. She says she brought him in but didn’t get anything from him. She says her theory is still out of whack. Mariana spots Mat and wonders why he is there. Brandon takes the stage and says he’s going to perform his own piece even if it disqualifies him. He says he came to learn and not to compete. He uses a looping tool to make up for his injured hand.
Callie watches him play in wonder. The audience is on their feet by the end. He gives Callie a heavy look. Later, the family tells him they are proud and hugs on him. Mat tells Mariana he has to go and just came to support Brandon. AJ and Brandon do some brother bonding. Stef talks to Callie and says Rita will be charged with assault and abuse of a minor. Jenna pulls Stef aside. Callie has to decide between Rita and her adoption. She sends the recording to Rita so she can clear her name.
Jenna and Stef talk and Jenna is all teared up. She says she isn’t sure if she should tell her. She says Monte has feelings for Lena. Brandon is stunned to hear that he won and will perform at Disney Hall. Stef seems uncomfortable when Lena hugs her. Mariana and Callie wonder why the moms went home early. Mat asks to talk to Mariana alone. They go outside. He says he left then came back. He says he know why she broke up with him – over the tour – he says she’s more important. She hugs and kisses him.
Callie goes to chat up Brandon and asks if he’s drunk. She says it was beautiful and she mentions AJ then says she’s not dating him. She asks if he was at Girls United the other night and says she thought she saw his car the other night. Mat and Mariana are making out. He says he didn’t want to have sex with her because he wanted it to be special and says he’s a virgin. He says he wants their first time to be together when they both lost their virginity.
She lies back and he says maybe they can do it now. She stares up at him and admits she’s not a virgin. He says she told him she was. She says she was but had sex with someone else. Mat asks when and she says it was when they were still together. He’s crushed. Mike thanks a buddy as he hands him the ink pen and says to try and match it to the prints on the hit and run vehicle. Lena comes home and finds Stef on the couch. Stef asks if she’s having an affair with Monte or is in love with her.
Lena says no and asks why she’s asking her. Then she asks about the kiss. Lena says she did not kiss her, she says Monte kissed her. She says she didn’t want to upset Stef. She says Jenna thinks that Monte broke up with her because she’s in love with Lena. She says she made it clear to Lena that she’s in love with her. She says the kiss was nothing. Stef says if the kiss was nothing, she would have told her. Callie tells Brandon that Mariana is in her room asleep and Mat is gone.
Callie tells Brandon about the Carmen and Rita thing. She says she has a recording of Carmen admitting she lied and sent it to Rita. She says it’s not good for them because Carmen knows they kissed at the fundraiser. She says she’s going to tell the social worker. Brandon asks if she can deny it and she says she didn’t in the recording so Rita knows it too. Callie says the judge won’t let them adopt her and Lena and Stef will probably be mad at him too. She says she couldn’t let Rita go to jail.
She says she did something wrong, not Rita. She says she hopes he understands. Brandon says he doesn’t care about himself but is worried about her. She says she can’t go back to GU and hopes she can live with her dad. She says none of it was meant to be. Brandon admits he was outside of GU the other night. They share a long look. He says they should say goodnight. She walks away. She goes to her room and sits on the bed. He stares at the fire.
She pulls off her shirt and he goes up the stairs. She pulls off her bra and gets dressed for bed. He comes down the hall. He touches the doorknob and opens the door. He lies down on his own bed. They each lie in bed staring at their own ceiling. Later, he comes into her room and sits on her bed. He takes her hand and they kiss. They undress each other and fall into bed.
