RECAP:

#TheIsland starts on day nine in the evening and Jud says he’s dying of hunger. He doesn’t like the limpets and fish. He says he’s over starving. Earnest talks about beer and Philly cheesesteak. Graham says to stop talking about food. Dakota says he missed food. Jud says at night, the misery gets worse right before he goes to sleep and how he’d love to be in a comfortable bed preferably with a woman. Jud wonders if he should be there and what’s best for him.

Matt says Jud needs to get out of his head and is just rotating negative thoughts around. Matt asks his motivation to come and he says he came to get out of his box and expand his boundaries. We see Jud at home and he says his upbringing was privileged and fortunate. His mom asked if he would be hungry and thirsty and he says probably. Jud says the Island is the first detour he’s taken from his upper class American wife. His mom is nervous for him. Now, he says he’s comfortable cashing out.

Jud says where he’s at now, his time is near. Jud says the truth is, he can’t wait for it to be done and it never happen again. On day 10, Matt and Rick find the net is all tangled. Matt says it’s hard for him to stay positive with this. Bear says when you don’t eat, your body cannibalizes muscle and you have no energy to even look for food. Earnest says he’s missing his kids and says they’re old enough to know he’s not home. We see him back home with his kids.

Earnest says his dad was in jail a lot and wasn’t in his life a lot. He says he knew he wanted to be around and be a provider. He says he goes above and beyond for his kids to make sure they have a great life. He says his son was crying when he saw him packing his suitcase. The guys go to do a water run and they talk about fishing as well. Earnest, Rob, Benji and Dakota go scout with Matt. Earnest says he needs to get more time with his kids. Dakota spots a pig and they make a plan to stab it in the head.

They decide to approach it from all angles. Benji tells them where it’s at. Dakota tells them he’ll go after it and they need to get it if it runs. Rob tells Graham the pig is looking at him. One of them picks up a rock to bash it in the head. Rob is excited that they may get a pig. They get the pig and beat it with a rock and it squeals. They killed it. They thank the pig for its sacrifice. Benji is happy they have a pig and they’re going to eat.

They look for a post to tie it up. Matt says it’s food not a trophy and says he feels better about killing it himself. They’re excited to come back with 30 liters of water and a pig. They come back and tell the other guys they have a pig and Trey is thrilled. He says they came out of the forest triumphantly carrying a pig. They look around for the knife and Bear says as a society we are very sanitized about where our meat comes from.

He says these men have gone back to basics. Rob says they keep having milestone days and says to #expecttheunexpected all the time. He says it’s exciting. Buck pulls out the organs and tells them what each is. They talk about eating the organs too. They’re cooking up heart, liver and other organs and cook it up and everyone grabs it. The guys gobble it up and Trey says it’s so great that he’s eating pork and says it’s a taste of home. He says he’s a meat and potatoes guy at home.

Graham tries a pig testicle and says it was okay. Jud eats a piece. Graham says it’s like a fatty piece of bacon. 45 minutes after killing it, they’re eating. Graham says the farm to table thing is good. The guys eat and drink their fill. Trey thinks Jud is being a baby when he complains about sand being on the food and says there is sand everywhere and he would like to see him being less pretentious and more humble. Jud lies on his back and says he wants someone to feed him.

They tell him there are no maids there. The guys talk about playing a game to celebrate and they set up a beach bocci ball game with coconuts and a baseball they found. Jud wins and he wins the ball. Jud says Benji has such a positive attitude and it’s rubbed off on him. They joke about sports being good for morale. Earnest says it’s calm, relaxing and beautiful. He says his infantry background makes him adaptable. He says it hit him hard that his son didn’t want him to go just as he was leaving.

Earnest says he could be better and says it’s pulling him back home right now. Jim says Earnest is emotional right now. Matt tells the others about Earnest wanting to go home. Matt asks what’s on his mind and he says he’s just debating. The tide starts coming in really high and taking over their camp. The guys see it and tell Buck and Jim the tides are destroying the camp. Bear says your life depends on making smart, clear headed decisions. He says building on a beach is not smart.

Dakota says he’s been sleeping by the fire and Graham says it could reach his spot too. They talk about moving the camp. Jim says he’s staying down there and calls it his cabana. He doesn’t want to move into the woods. Dakota says he’s staying too. Matt says Jim is staying and Dakota wants to sleep in the fire pit still. The other guys move out. Jim tells Graham to get the camrea off him and Rick says he’s not a happy camper. They hear him yelling.

Benji and the guys find a spot in the woods that seems comfortable. It’s about 200 yards down and Benji says they need to clear the space and chop some stuff down. They’re building and clearing and working on a couple of shelters. They also work on a fire pit and get a fire going. They set up a table with a large flat log they find. Benji is excited and says it’s like home living. Jim is annoyed and says they want to be a hippy community and he doesn’t want to be part of it. He says he’s staying.

Benji was sleeping by the fire and felt something crawl up his sleeve and found a crab on him. He says it was like the island was alive. They grabbed up a bunch of them in a bucket. Buck says this is like Indian Guides when he was a kid catching frogs. The guys grab up all the crabs they can get their hands on. Rob squeals when a crab gets near him and the others says he’s #scaredlikeababy. He carries on while he picks up crabs. They have a big bucket full of crabs.

Morning of day 12, they wake and Graham says they’re going to cook and eat the crabs. They work out an assembly line. Bear says they still haven’t found a regular source of food. He says if you eat any shells, it will wreak havoc on your bowels. Benji says the crabs are mating on the beach during high tide and they were able to get a lot. They cook them on the fire then start cracking them open. One asks if you can eat the shells and someone else says it’s fine (it’s not).

They agree these are better than limpets. Later they drum and chant. Graham says he thinks they’re turning a corner and things are normalizing now they have some food and water. He says Earnest is still thinking of leaving but hopes he’ll stay. He says there’s strength in numbers and hopes he does stay. Day 13 arrives and Earnest says he doesn’t want to leave because it’s hard but needs to be home with his kids. He says his dad never came to any of his school events. Then he gets teary.

Earnest says he just wants to be there for his kids. He tells Benji that in 2008-2009, he and his wife had a little girl and she was born but wasn’t breathing. He says they had her in ICU for a month and they didn’t know what was wrong with her. He says after a month the doctors said they told them they couldn’t do anything more and they had to let her go. He cries and talks about how young he and his wife were and says they didn’t have parents to support them. He says they had to let her go.

He says they had a funeral for her and there was no one in the room, it was just them and their baby. He says the other funerals had people but not theirs. He says they told people about it but no one f-ing came. He cries and says he hates crying. Benji says it’s an emotional morning and he had to stop filming and give Earnest the hug he deserved and needed and says he couldn’t do his job and keep on filming.

Earnest says he doesn’t want people thinking he’s running away and they talk about trying to convince him to stay. Trey asks if there are other people to help out his family. Earnest says not really and says no one has ever come through. Trey says maybe that’s a lesson to learn from this and to not be the one all the time. Earnest says hell no. He says he’s given people millions of chances to show up and says they don’t. He says he can’t trust people and says if you can’t come for that, it’s an issue.

Earnest says he wants to be the greatest father ever and says he wants to be that now. They make the call to get Earnest taken out and then he goes to say his goodbyes to everyone. Dakota says Earnest has been through so much and is a great person. He says he’ll miss him a lot. He hugs Benji too. They all say #GoodbyeEarnest. Benji says he figured out his family was where he needed to be so he’s proud they have him. He and Rob do a video selfie. Rob says Earnest is leaving for the best reasons.

Bear says the men are growing under tough conditions and says nature reminds you what’s important. They walk Earnest down to met the boat and tell him to go to his family. He draws USA in the sand then goes to the boat. They all applaud him as he goes. Jud says he’s turned a new leaf and says survival isn’t about whittling or hunting but having the mental fortitude to put up with what’s going on with the hunger and thirst. He says it’s largely about attitude.

Jim says his buds are dropping like flies. They’re down to 10. Trey is having bowel movement issues. He says it’s painful and he’s going very few hours. The others wonder if he just needs a day of rest. He says he’s holding it in since they’re painful and that’s what makes it worse. He says he’s trying not to collapse under the strain. He collapses and they yell for Buck and the med kit. They tell him it’s Trey and he’s in the woods. They found his pants and then heard him calling for the doc.

Trey says there’s something stuck and they ask if he needs them to take a look. Buck takes the gloves and goes to check. Trey says you haven’t lived until you dug four or five hours of coconut and crab shell out of his butt. He says it’s demoralizing and the other guys are nicely not talking about it. Trey tells the group he has an anal fissure he named Agnes. He says it takes weeks to heal so he’s stuck like this. Trey says he’s hurting a lot and is at his wit’s end.

He says he has no energy and wanted to call medical to leave. He says he’s lightheaded and dizzy. He says he thinks his days on the island are numbered. Bear says the men each came for something different. He says for those that remain, there is more to learn.
