#LastShip begins at a refugee camp with a young Rachel listening to her father refuse malaria treatment for her mother. They were missionaries and he says it’s in God’s hands. Rachel carves up Niels’ organs and labels them then stores them for research. Tom comes back and tells Mike the safe zone didn’t work out. Mike says Niels is dead and they all said it was a bad reaction to a blood transfusion. Mike thinks it’s fortunate. Tom comes to see Rachel and she says the vaccinated blood donor’s blood killed Niels.
She says she’s preserving his organs to make the most of it. She says they need to burn his corpse. Rachel tosses Niels’ glasses in the trash with the other bloody biological materials she’s dealing with. The prisoners they took are complaining when Mike shows up and calls them dirt bags and says they’re enemy combatants and they can live out their lives there for all he cares. He asks about the cell phones and says there’s nothing on them – not even selfies. He asks why they all had them on them.
Mike says one of them will break and whoever wants to see the sunlight can talk to him. Mike says to split them up. Alisha tells the President and the group where the New Orleans refugees are off shore. Michener says the plan was to have enough for 5,000-10,000 people. They are survivors not immunes as far as they know. Michener says Sean will come looking for them. Michener asks if they’ll have enough cure doses from them all but Tom says they may be able to drop it on them.
Rachel works and has flashbacks of killing Niels. The other doc asks why she’s not working on the aerosol. She says Niels made her think that the cure could be contagious. She says they may be able to re-engineer the virus to spread. He asks how he can help. Andrea and Miller are talking about Niels’ death. He says after Rachel changed the IV bag, he bled out like people who have the virus. Andrea reports to Mike and Tom that everyone says Niels was getting better until that last IV bag.
Andrea leaves and Tom tells Mike they need to conduct this investigation carefully. Andrea comes into the lab and asks Bertrise and Rachel to step apart. They have to collect everything connected with his death. They take some things and Rachel casually closes her computer. Michener is on the bridge listening to New Orleans chatter. Kara shows Tom there are 50 or so vessels and they wonder where the Ramsays and their sub is since they haven’t spotted it.
Wolf and Burke talk about what they should do with the prisoners. Ravit comes in and says she has to shower since the women’s water is out. Wolf steps out – Burke says he’s going to finish shaving. Ravit checks him out then makes sure no one else is there. She asks if this is the place where people have sex and he says it’s against regulation. He says Kara is pregnant and Burke says they’ve both been punished. Ravit gets really close and he says no sex. She says it’s a shame people follow the rules.
He says they’ll be in New Orleans soon. She walks away and pulls off her shirt and says if there’s no sex, he needs to get out. Rafe talks to some other guys and they wonder who killed Niels. They suspect it’s Rachel that did him in. Rafe is in engineering and the guys check out the phones. They spot a game they’re using. It’s a text message app disguised as a game that works with blue tooth. They demonstrate to Tom how it works. It’s encrypted and only works within 90 yards from the next phone.
One of the prisoners, Flea, is brought to talk to Tom and Michener. Tom says they told him he’s the smart one. Tom introduce Michener as the President. Flea says he’s seen his videos and Tom asks about the phones. Tom says he’s going to swing for killing the kid. Michener says to tell him how the code works and he can issue a pardon. Rachel tells Mike this is ridiculous. She says she talked to Andrea and he says it’s protocol. She asks if Tom is aware of this Mike says he ordered it.
She asks to talk to Tom and he says that’s a breach of protocol. Rachel says she’s on the verge of a breakthrough and he’s wasting time. Mike says to stop wasting time. He asks her when Niels took a turn for the worse. Andrea tells Mike they found an IV bag in the trash that’s suspect. She says Milowsky is clear since he was in the mess and he’s working up what was in it. Mike tells Tom and Michener that they’re pretty clear on Rachel swapping out the IV bags.
Michener asks Tom if he’s certain. Rachel comes to see Milowsky who has her laptop. She asks why he has it. He says he saw Niels’ NA with bursting scars. He asks if she put DNA scissors into his bloodstream. He says she put them all under suspicion. He says he’s under strict orders not to be in contact with her and tells her to take her computer and go. He says all fingers point to her even without this evidence. He says if she’s going to do what he thinks she will, he says she best do it soon.
He says they’ll lock her out of the lab soon. Andrea talks to Tom when Rachel walks by. She goes to her lab in a hurry and gets to work. She mixes up a batch of something and injects it into her arm. Then she gets one of the mice and blows on it. She watches the time closely.
Rachel thinks back to her father praying over her mother’s dead body – dead of malaria. The doctor talked to Rachel and says she knows she’s angry and says she should use the anger to change things and fight for what she believes. Rachel watches the mouse she infected and waits. Tex shows up and says they’re getting close to New Orleans and asks if she wants a souvenir. She says she’s been avoiding her since the suspicion started. He asks if she’s okay and she says yeah.
She asks if he’s going to ask her the question everyone else has. Tex says no one would be there if it wasn’t for her and says he wouldn’t change a thing about her. He says she’s ruthless and that’s why they’re alive. Miller and O’Conor report to Tom and Mike that the crew was giving them swag and they tell them the crew thinks they ordered Niels’ death or condoned it. Rachel comes to see Tom at his request. He asks about her progress. Rachel says she has a new plan.
She says she isolated the contagion in Niels’ lungs and put it into the vaccine. She says she put it into herself an hour ago and breathed into an infected mouth like he used to do to spread the illness. She says if it works, she can breathe the cure onto people and so can anyone she injects with it. She says their problems will be solved. Tom asks if she did it and Rachel says Niels killed 5 million people including his wife and the crews’ family. She says she did it and would do it again.
She says she waited until Tom left so he wouldn’t have blood on his hands. Tom asks if she knows how he keeps the crew together – he says every ritual reminds them what they do matters and they are still who they are. Rachel says she did what was right and he says that’s not her decision. She says Niels was a monster who stole everything from her and says he nearly destroyed the human race and says she could have done what she needed without killing him.
She says but when she watched the virus destroy him and watched his last noxious breath leave his body all she could think was that he died too quickly. Rachel walks out. Tom tells Michener that Rachel confessed and they confined her to quarters. Tom says she discovered the cure and it would be a miracle if she made the cure airborne. Tom says most of the crew want her pardoned. Michener asks what he’ll do and Tom says he hasn’t decided yet.
Miller, Tex, and some others are out with Flea scouting the New Orleans fleet. Flea says he got a message and they tell him to decode it or he’s off the side. Danny and the others all pressure him. He says the message says “they’re hear.” They radio back and Danny says the immunes know they’re there. The ship slows to halt and they see the New Orleans fleet – or what was the fleet go up in a series of fiery explosions. Then a torpedo comes at them. They take evasive maneuvers.
The sub was already in New Orleans and hiding under the ships. They discuss firing on it but Michener says they can’t fire in case there are civilians in the water. More torpedos coming at them. They start firing to move the torpedoes to target off of them. They get all but one and take a hit. Alisha reports the hull is intact. Danny reports there are survivors in the water – they want to help but the ship can’t support them. Tom says they can’t go back with the sub. Then the sub hails them.
Tom takes the call – Sean asks if he enjoyed the fireworks and Tom says he just killed 10,000 civilians to their deaths and says to come out of hiding. Sean says the number of his enemies is about to multiply. The cell phone activates. They videoed the Nathan James firing and edited it to make it look like the James fired on New Orleans. A logo appears that says Valkyrie and they ask Michener if he knows who that is. He says he doesn’t know.
Rachel reports back to Tom she made a contagious cure. She says she can give everyone who has been vaccinated a booster. She says everyone they meet will get the cure and it will spread like the common cold. Tom says it’s great news. Rachel says she didn’t expect him to be happy and Tom clarifies what he just saw happen in New Orleans and says the whole country thinks they’re the enemy. He says without Niels to put in front of the world, he can’t fight the propaganda.
Rachel says she’s sorry he’s in this position. Tom says she’s allowed to do her job and then she’s limited to quarters and can’t go anyplace communal on the ship. He says he can’t sentence her for her crimes at sea and he will turn her over to civilian authorities to answer for her crimes. She asks if this is what he wants and he says none of this is about what he wants. She walks out.
