“The Vampire Diaries” spoilers discusses the possibility of the series being cancelled. Ratings have steadily dropped on episodes of the CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” despite the fact that it is still popular among fans. Currently in its sixth season, “The Vampire Diaries” has been renewed for a seventh season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the series is safe. Networks can always choose to cancel a series in the middle of a season if it continually getting low ratings and losing the network money.
While that is unlikely to happen to a series that has shown such a strong presence and popularity like “Vampire Diaries” has, it’s not unheard of.
Many fans agree that season 5 was not the best and was by far the darkest. Season 6 has shown an improvement from that and has been more of a fan pleaser it seems, but ratings are still lower than expected. Could it be that fans are ready for something new? Perhaps they want to see some lighter fare on the series. After all, we were just emotionally beaten by Sheriff Forbes’ death, but hey, it’s a vampire world — everyone knows it’s not unicorns and rainbows.
So how can the series ramp up things a little and perhaps lighten up? Vampires are typically dark creatures — which is fitting. They don’t like the sunshine all that much and they are pale and undead. “Vampire Diaries” has explored a number of unique storylines throughout these six seasons, so it’s hard to imagine how the writers could offer a change up in the series.
It’s unfortunate that “Vampire Diaries” may be suffering from something that many popular series suffer from after they have been on the air for several seasons: Perhaps we could call it “nothing new under the sun” or “been there, done that.” Fans want to see new and fresh story lines and material, even in favorite shows that they have been loyal and faithful to.
It is unlikely that “Vampire Diaries” will be canceled, but it is easy to believe that the next season — season 7 — could be the last for the series. It’s easy to believe that the CW will not renew for an eighth season if they don’t see an improvement in the number of viewers and ratings.

It is likely that since the series returned on March 12, we may see some exploration of the Stefan and Caroline (Steroline) romance slash friendship and that would certainly please a large number of fans.
