Tonight’s episode of The Voice kicks off with host Carson Daly taking the stage – he introduces The Voice coaches Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Pharrell Williams, and Adam Levine. Tonight is the first rounds of play-offs. Team Pharrell will be facing off against Team Blake. To kick the play-offs off right, Adam Levine performs with his band Maroon 5 on The Voice stage.
Tonight’s first battle will be Team Blake’s Sarah Potenza, she is performing Leonard Skynard’s hit song “Free Bird.” Blake spent the week in the studio with Sarah, and they have put their own twist on the instrumentals so that during the break in the song they don’t fake the audience out and make them think the song is over before it should be. Carson Daly introduces Sarah, and she hits the stage and performs her rendition of “Free Bird.”
Christina kicks off the critiques, she says that Sarah “embodied a free bird and a free spirit. It reminded me of my dear friend Linda Perry, I love your emotion and how raw it is. It was really great.” Pharrell adds, “I thought that was a great song choice as well and I loved the idea that you explored the other tones in your voice. Really good choice.” Adam comments, “I was concerned because there is a lot of blank space vocally. It was cool though because your vocals were doing what the guitar solo would do. It was a really interesting take on the song.” Sarah’s coach Blake gushes, “When you work with Sarah, you get a barrage of emails from her. She emailed me song choices and this was her idea. She swung for the park and she nailed it.”
Now, it is time for Team Pharrell’s Caitlin Caporale to take The Voice stage – she performs a rendition of Beyonce’s “Best Thing I Never Had.” Adam Levine kicks off the critiques, “I thought that was blanking amazing. And it doesn’t suck to be you right now. Get it? That was funny!” Blake adds, “This is the truth, you are really starting to show yourself as a threat to us other coaches. The way you navigate a melody is just so different and so great. You are a great artist, you are making us all look good.” Christina agrees, “I love having you on The Voice and I always do look forward to seeing you on the stage. Pharrell brought up a good point, your high-notes are so great, it’s so easy for you. It’s a breeze. I’m so upset my team was full when you came along.” Pharrell closes with, “Thanks for all the comments, and I am very proud of you. You just showed everybody why you deserve to be here. You really went inside and you embraced who you really are and how good you are. I’m very proud of you.”
Now it’s time for the next battle, Team Blake’s singer Hannah Kirby takes The Voice stage and performs “I Feel The Earth Move” by Carol King. Christina kicks off the critiques with, “That was so entertaining, I loved it. I think it was my favorite performance of the night.” Pharrell adds, “Call me as crazy as your dances, as your performances, but I am telling you – to me that is entertainment. The way you let your voice control your body is awesome. You are a singer!” Adam agrees, “That is the kind of fearless you have to have, the complete lack of insecurities is so refreshing. The only way to be your best is by being completely unafraid.” Hannah’s coach Blake gushes, “I swear it is like Hannah is possessed by the song that she is singing, whether it is in rehearsal or up here. I want to be sure that the thing that everyone notices more than everything is how perfect her singing is. A person like you is the reason that there is a show like this.”
Hannah Kirby’s competition takes the stage next, it’s Team Pharrell’s crooner Lowell Oakley. Oakley is performing “Jealous” by Nick Jonas. Adam Levine kicks off the critiques, “All of the guys that we love the crooners dudes, they can hang with a lot of different kind of music, and you showed us tonight that you can do that.” Blake comments, “I got to say, you have an Adam Levine type of falsetto. I didn’t realize you had that. Great job.” Christina agrees, “I was worried you weren’t going to be able to pull it off, but you kept getting better and better. I loved it and you didn’t overdo anything, and you stayed focused. I liked that you added your own inflections and made it your own.” Lowell’s coach Pharrell comments, “You could really see that you were focused, I am very happy for you and I hope that this felt amazing like it looked to us.”
Up next is Team Pharrell’s artist Mia Z, she will be singing the Eva Cassidy version of the classic song “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Mia takes the stage and nails her rendition of the blues song, The first judge to critique Mia is Adam and he says, “That was awesome. You have an amazing voice. I see where I think you are going and where you are, and I know you are only going to get better. You have a really unique approach to all of this, I am a fan.” Blake comments, “If there was one person I could pick on this show to be on my team would be you, I feel like you have been under the radar. I feel like you are the most underrated singer on this show.” Christina agrees, “I loved the song choice, I really liked that it wasn’t some cliché pop song. I got inspired, I want to sing this song in my set. Really nice!” Mia’s coach Pharrell says, “What an amazing talent that I am blessed to have on my team. You don’t see 16 year old girls walking around with that kind of skill and that kind of power. I am confident that America is going to love you as much as I love you.”
Team Pharrell’s next singer to take the stage is Koryn Hawthrone, she performs the traditional gospel song “How Great Thou Art.” After her performance Adam Levine comments, “Everyone is going to say wonderful things to you, I am just trying to think of something unique and wonderful to say. I was like watching this battle you were having with nerves, and you just destroyed them and overcame them. It was so cool to see.” Blake agrees, “It was almost like she is flexing her muscles while she is singing, it really draws you in. Screw it, ill just say it now – welcome to the Top 12.” Christina comments, “What a perfect song choice for you, the poise that have is you just cant teach certain things like that, that’s why I had you on my team. There is so much more I want to say, it couldn’t have been better. Love you.” Koryn’s coach Pharrell closes with, “When you flex your muscles I felt like you are an antennae and the note kept coming through stronger and stronger. Do you guys feel that? I’m so glad you’re on my team.”
Team Blake’s singer Corey Kent White, tonight he is performing Garth Brooks’ hit “To Make You Feel My Love.” Christina Aguilera kicks off the critiques with, “You just have this tenderness to your voice that makes every word so believable. I think out of all of the seasons I have been on, this is by far the strongest of over all talents. So, thank you.” Pharrell agrees, “Yes the singing is great, yes the performance is great, there is just this overwhelming source of sincerity and that is super rare.” Adam comments, “They are totally right about everything they say, but I thought there could hae been a little more of a bit of a climax towards the end. Selfishly, I thought that could have gone a really long way. That’s just me, I don’t know, talk to your coach.” Blake comments, “You know Adam is right, but the mark of a great country singer is to move people with the story and with your emotion, not just what you can do vocally. I thought that was a great job dude, I’m very proud of you.”
Team Blake’s next singer to take the stage is Brooke Adee, she performs a rendition of Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do.” Christina kicks off the critiques with, “I could hear what you meant about having to go all over the place with your range – you definitely hit all the right notes. You have a great power to your voice, next tie I would love to see you a little looser but I could tell you were focused on the notes.” Pharrell agrees, “I feel the same way as Christina, it definitely showed range but in the future I would love to see some of your own adlibs. I thought it was a great performance but I would like to see what you add as well.” Adam comments, “I thought that was good, Christina made a point about being looser. I think we all felt you were trying to stick to the plan too much and it felt stiff. But, clearly you are here for a reason, I think that moving forward there is more to do.” Brooke’s coach Blake explains, “What I wanted America to see and I am glad that they did is you showcased what a perfect singer you are. That bottom in that she sings with just cuts through with such strength. I couldn’t be prouder of you.”
Team Blake’s next singer to take the stage is Meghan Lindsey, she performs “love Runs Out” by One Republic. Christina critiques, “That was great! SO great! That must feel really good, congratulations that was a great performance.” Pharrell adds, “You have to know how proud I am of you. You are living proof that you should not give up on your dream. You heard “no” so many times and look where you wound up, right here doing what you want to do your way.” Meghan’s coach Blake comments, “It’s so easy to keep going back to the well with her and have her do Aretha. But, you can do whatever you think of doing. That was a great job, congratulations.”
The final singer to perform tonight is Team Pharrell’s Sawyer Fredericks with an original song titled “Trouble.” Adam kicks off the critiques with, “It is so surreal, you’re 16 now, and you’re singing about being saved by a woman. It’s so crazy how your soul is way older than you are. When you are hearing this man voice about a man situation it’s crazy, I’m just a huge fan of yours.” Blake adds, “I got saved by a woman when I was 16. You know it is hard to watch Sawyer and not think that the other coaches here are screwed. You’re so good man, keep doing what you do. I don’t care what happens on this show, you are a star man.” Pharrell agrees, “You already know that I am proud of you and I consider you to be a super rare natural. I am really convinced that American and all of those young ladies out there that are listening to you sing – they will completely understand.”
