'The Young and the Restless' Spoilers: Is Avery’s Ex Joe Clark Actually Nick’s Enemy Matt Clark's Brother?

“The Young and the Restless” spoilers and rumors tease some exciting twists and turns coming up on the CBS soap, not that there is ever a dull moment in Genoa City. When Y&R comings and goings confirmed months ago that there was a new character headed to the soap named Joe Clark, rumors began flying around the internet that he may be related to an iconic GC bad guy named Matt Clark. Y&R fans were convinced that Joe Clark could be Matt’s brother!

The mysterious Joe Clark arrived in Genoa City seemingly out of the blue. Joe Clark already has contacts to residents in Genoa City and is bent on revenge against Dylan. After all, he blames Dylan for breaking up his marriage, but is there another reason he is in town wanting to destroy the Newman Family?

When “The Young and the Restless” spoilers first revealed there would be a new character heading to the CBS soap, the name sounded familiar because there was a character 20 years ago named Matt Clark played by Eddie Cibrian (1994-1996), Russell Lawrence (2000), and Rick Hearst (2000-2001). He was a jock type in high school, and Matt Clark [Eddie Cibrian] was Sharon Collins’s [Sharon Case] boyfriend at the time. Sharon’s best friend was Amy Wilson, and Nick Newman dated Amy. Nick and Sharon had undeniable chemistry from the moment they laid eyes on each other. They tried to fight the attraction because they were dating other people. Eventually the lust won out, and Sharon and Nick became a couple and broke hearts along the way. Matt Clark was livid and was going to stop at nothing to break them up.

Eventually, Nick and Sharon got engaged, and “The Young and the Restless” super couple was born. However, their happiness was short lived. Matt was still hell bent on revenge and he hated Nick with all of his being. The Matt / Nick dynamic was made up of Nick defending his damsel in distress and Matt constantly reminding Nick that he had her first and implied she was easy. Matt beat Nick to a pulp when Matt told him she was cheating on him. Needless to say, Nick lost that round.

Matt Clark then proceeded to tell Nick Sharon’s dirty little secret. She gave a baby up for adoption. Nick didn’t believe it! Sharon’s broken heart and embarrassment confirmed it: she told him the circumstances around the baby she gave away. Matt had raped her! Nick was livid and he left to confront Matt but when he got there Matt was already on the floor with a bullet in him. Nick got arrested for attempted murder. Matt lied and told the police that Nick tried to kill him! Nick went on trial for attempted murder. A year later the truth comes out that Amy Wilson, Nick’s ex, shot him because he had raped her too! Nick was vindicated. Eventually, Nick found out rapist Matt Clark had Rohypnol in his possession and had him sent to prison, and Sharon and Nick got married.

Five years later, Matt returned to “The Young and the Restless” with a different face; he had plastic surgery and he was dead set on revenge . He changed his name to Carter Mills and got a job at Nick and Sharon’s coffee house. Matt / Carter convinced a girl named Tricia McNeil [Sabryn Genet], who did not like Nick to help him with his revenge on the Newmans. Matt, being the despicable character that he was, took what he wanted when he wanted, and he raped his accomplice Tricia. Matt didn’t see anything wrong in it and went on with life. Tricia on the other hand was traumatized but tried to hide it.

Sure Clark is a common name, but soap operas don’t typically recycle last names unless the characters are somehow linked to one another. Considering the fact that in the past on “The Young and the Restless” Matt Clark came back to Genoa City with plastic surgery and a new name – who is to say that he didn’t do it again? Or, even better – Joe Clark could be Matt Clark’s brother, and he followed Avery to Genoa City with ulterior motives and that would explain why he got caught up with Victor Newman and his business. Perhaps Joe Clark doesn’t know everything that his brother Matt did to wreak havoc on the Newman Family and he heard an entirely different version of events and thinks that Nick Newman actually tormented Matt. ‏
