Tonight on #UndercoverBoss, we’ll travel with Armando Montelongo, a real estate investment educator that holds wealth seminars. He brought in a body double to help cover up who he is. His company does the most house flipping in America and also leads seminars teaching others how to do this. He makes $75 million a year and has a net worth of $200 million. He says he has an amazing life and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

He has call centers to schedule participants into a seminar that then leads them to a three day event that costs thousands of dollars. He says leaders of industry change the world and considers himself one of these. He talks about the housing crash of 2009 and says he flipped houses even in the worst markets. He says he went from flipping one to two houses a month to flipping 25.

He travels with an entourage including a former Navy Seal bodyguard. He says they have had complaints against them but shows that there are just 146 complaints on the Better Business Bureau and says he has touched 1.5 million people, so that’s not bad. He says he wants to go undercover to see the problems that may grow as the company does.

He gets into his disguise and heads out to Orlando to work as an electrician in one of the houses his company is flipping. He asks for Angel and then he puts him to work pulling outlets but he’s struggling. Angel tells him to put some money into it and says he’s not working fast enough. Armando says this is his personal hell and he’s struggling. Next they go to pull a ceiling fan. Angel says he’s throwing a temper tantrum like a two year old.

Angel says he broke the box and now he has to replace it. He shatters a glass light and Angel is ready to show him the door. He says he would fire him for all this. They sit down and take a break and Angel says he bought the business in early 1990 and had to spend 10 years paying off loans. He says he wants his kids to go to college and be better than him. He says his dad still works at 76 and is first on the job and last to leave and that sets his example.

Armando is very impressed with him and wishes he had an army of Angels to flip houses. He goes to Riverside, California next to speak at a seminar. He says they pay for him to teach them how to slip houses. He says he always wanted to experience it as a student. He ends the session then goes undercover as a student. He brings in his double to mill around in his place. He puts sunglasses on the guy and teaches him how to walk around then sends him out.

He comes back in wearing his disguise and sits down in one of the session that someone else is running. He’s worried that people are noticing him but then his double comes in and lurks at the back of the room then walks around with some of his entourage. He’s happy with the presentation his staff is giving and then they call for a break before Armando speaks again. He meets some of the students and asks them about real estate and what they want. One guy wants to be able for his mom to stop working.

He says the students are the soul of the company and talks to one of the students over food. He asks why she chose Armando’s course. She says she wants to make more money so her mom doesn’t have to work. She says she’s 70 and still works three days a week. She talks about her sister who is mentally ill and lives in a halfway house. She says she paid $46,000 to get there and says she and her mom ran up their credit cards and drained their savings.

He asks her what happens if it doesn’t work out and she says she can’t even think like that. Armando says that’s the pressure he felt before he made his success.

Armando is now working as a room director at a free preview event. He says this is the first event and it’s important to get people interested in the system. He meets with Sarah who thinks he looks sloppy and needs a haircut. She takes him outside to show him how to run registration. A guest shows up and he introduces himself and asks about her dog. Sarah thinks he’s very awkward. She says he’s not acting natural and doesn’t know how to talk to people.

She tells him he’s mumbling and has communication problems. She thinks he’s a weirdo. Sarah says he seems anti-social and doesn’t seem confident. She says next they sell real estate packages. She says the next package is $1,500 if they book today. She says if they call the office later, the price goes up to $3,000. He thinks Sarah is doing a great job and says there are obstacles. Some of them ask to give post-dated checks and others say they need to call someone else.

He thinks Sarah has the system down pat. He asks her about her prior work and she says she was an event planner but now makes enough to help her parents. She says it’s a lot of pressure but compels her to do well at her job. He asks what she’d change and she says knowing her schedule in advance and says it scares new people who think if they don’t get a schedule, they may not have a job. Armando realizes this is something that he has to fix.

Next he heads to the headquarters in Texas to work in his call center. He wants to make sure his brand is being well represented. He works with Amanda, a team leader. She says they take in-bound calls and make calls from leads. She says each person has to make 200 calls a day. She says they need to call people that missed an event and get them to come to another event. Amanda thinks he’s not very natural and says he sounds scripted and stiff.

The computer locks up and she says that happens a lot. Armando sees that his entire business is at a standstill. She says it happens a couple of times a day. He’s upset that he’s never heard about this and says the manager has gotten used to an under-performing system. He says he can’t believe no one is doing anything about it. He asks her if she knows who is. He goes into #BreakingCover mode and says he’s been there undercover.

He says he can’t believe that they’re not calling IT and pushing on IT until it’s fixed. He says he wants them to tell him what they need. He goes outside with Amanda. She says she doesn’t feel like she could go to IT and talk to them. She says they call the call center the hood and says they don’t get the attention that the other departments do. She says they work really hard and says system issues make it so they can’t hit their target call numbers. He says it affects their bonus.

She says she gets very frustrated and then she tears up. She says she tries to keep pushing forward because the company has taught her a lot. She says there’s not a lot of communication between departments and he says he doesn’t know how to fix it, but knows he needs to. He says he feels like he’s neglecting his employees. He says a lot of people came to work for him to rub elbows with him and now he’s neglecting them. He gives her a big hug.

Next is the #BossReveal. Angel tells him if he comes back to work for him more, he can work off some of his gut. Armando laughs. He tells Sarah that she did a great job at the free event. He says from now on, everyone would get four weeks worth of scheduling based on her comments. He also tells her that he’s giving her a promotion to the front end director of seminars so she’s running all the teams and is giving her a raise too. She’s thrilled.

He also says for the next year, he’s going to cover her parents’ living expenses and she says that will take a lot of pressure off. He says he’s also giving her $12k and she says that’s crazy. She says she may go to Greece and he says he’ll cover her hotel there too. Next is Angel and he says he worked him like no one has in a long time. He says he wants to help Angel grow his business. He gives him a half million dollar contract so he can immediately expand his business.

Armando also says that he heard him about his father. He says he’s sending he and his dad to the Kentucky Derby all expenses paid since his dad loves horse racing. He thanks him. Angel says it means a lot to him. He then talks to Shannon, the seminar student he chatted with. He tells her it’s hard to be the one everyone depends on and says he’s paying for her sister’s expenses up to $36k. She thanks him and say her mother will be happy. He says he loves her positive attitude and says he’s going to finance the purchase of her first flip up to $75k. She starts crying.

Armando says he’s also going to cover her cost of repairs up to $25k. He says he’s giving her an interest free loan and she gets to keep all of the profit. She’s thrilled and says she can’t wait to get started. Next is Amanda and he tells her when he got upset, it wasn’t her fault. He says he’s fixing the computer system immediately. She says that will be so much better. He also says he wants a liaison between the row, the call center and himself. He gives her that job and a 20% raise. She cries and says she really appreciates it.

She says sometimes she feels like she’s barely head above water. He asks how much debt she has and she says $5k. He tells her that’s he’s wiping that out for her. She cries and says she appreciates it. He then tells her he’s giving her an additional $20k and she really starts bawling. She says she’s been living paycheck to paycheck so this is a huge weight off. She says this gives her confidence. He also gives her a big hug.

Sarah is making the most of her promotion and is saving up for a new home. Angel is busy with his new home and took the Derby trip with his dad. Samantha is searching for her first flip and Amanda is planning a dream vacation.
