#Billions begins with Chuck talking to the team about playing chess as a teen and how great he was. He says his flaw was hatred of competitors that didn’t respect the game or were not worthy. He says that made him rage and all his strategy vanished and he would focus on destruction.
Chuck says Donnie is going to die and he sat up all night figuring it out. He says Axe fed them info through Donnie and they have to assume it’s all false and no good. Chuck says this is not his loss alone and says he cost them all as well. He says within an hour, Adam will walk in from the AG office.
He says he’ll take them off the Axe case even though Axe is in the wrong and is guilty. Bryan says they all got suckered in but Chuck says he set the tone and the papers will call him sloppy, driven and unhinged and they’re correct. He says from now on out, they remember how the game should be played.
Adam shows up and goes into Chuck’s office. IN a flashback, we see Donnie sitting at the conference room table and then going into the bathroom. Axe follows him in and asks how f-d are you. Donnie says maybe it’s the flu and Donnie says he wishes it was flu.
Donnie says it’s pancreatic cancer and really far along. He says it doesn’t matter with this kind. Another guy comes in and Axe chasees him out so he can be alone with Donnie. He asks if his kids know and Donnie says not yet.
Axe says they will find him the best people and says he knows a top oncologist. Donnie says he doesn’t have to but Axe insists. Axe asks him to come see him at the end of the day and says he has a thought. Now, we see Lara and Axe at the hospital.
Donnie’s husband comes out and says he’s gone. They hug him. Lara goes to help him make some phone calls to let people now. Know we see Donnie’s funeral. Flashback to Axe asking if Walter and the kids have enough money for when Donnie is gone.
Donnie says they won’t starve. He says he felt guilty when he came out and divorced his wife and gave her everything. He says the guy she remarried has control of the money now and isn’t sure how he handles it. Donnie says he just wants this kids taken care of.
He says good education, no debt, a house. Donnie says he thought he was going to take care of that in the next 10 years. Axe says $40 million guaranteed. Axe says it won’t be simple and his final weeks and months won’t be his own.
Donnie says he can’t spend one minute in jail. Axe says leave that to the lawyers. Chuck shows up to the funeral. He picks up a program and looks at it. Before this, we see Adam in Chuck’s office and Chuck asks if the AG wants him to drop the Axe case.
Adam says the Eastern District handles anything on Axe in the future. Adam says if Chuck defies the AG, he’ll lose his job. Chuck says he’d do the same thing in her place. He says he’s off Axe. Adam gives him thumbs up.
Chuck says they really need to talk about something else and suggests they take a walk. Wendy greets Walter, Donnie’s husband and curses when she sees Chuck is there. Wags sees him too. Wendy asks why Chuck is there and says it’s not appropriate.
She says turn and leave and Chuck asks why he would. Wendy says get the f-k out of here. Chuck says all right and walks past her. He goes over to Axe and extends his hand. Ae glares at him and then shakes his hand. Chuck says it’s a real loss and Axe says for both of them.
Chuck smirks and Wendy glares as he walks out. More people show up. Later, Axe talks to Wags and his lawyer about two of the ex employees and their investors. Looks like they stole some clients. The lawyer says they can sue them based on their NDAs. He says they won’t win, but it’s bad press now.
Axe says he’s going to breakfast and walks out. He goes to talk to some people and said the Ionosphere deal is bad and says if they extend them credit, they’re at risk. Axe tries to tank their new business behind their back.
At the funeral, Lara and Axe hold hands. Wags sips from a flask. In court, Orrin works the case to help Dollar Bill and shows Judge Wilcox a photograph of the child. He says Stearn was offering to help out of the goodness of his heart and says putting altruism is on trial.
Bryan says they can prove that medical expenses of $211k were paid and that was for insider information. He says Axe Capital made $89 million from this. Bryan says that was an investment and points at the photo. He says altruism is not on trial, the fairness of the markets is.
Bryan calls it a new brand of criminal. Judge Wilcox says medical treatment to a child requires them to know what is in Stearn’s heart. He dismisses the case and suggest the US attorney’s office not expend so much money pursuing personal scores.
Chuck hears the bad news later from Bryan and curses. He says Wilcox must be comfortable in his judge’s seat to pull that. Chuck tells Bryan to take the day and come back ready to go. Kate asks what Chuck will do. He says he lost the Axe and Dollar Bill case.
He says they need to turn these impediments to their favor. Dollar Bill shows up and everyone cheers. Axe tells him to get into his office now. The Keyser shouts stop and everyone goes silent and nervous. Bill heads into Axe’s office.
He says close the f-ing door. Bill does. Axe says pretend we’re having an argument and points a finger at him. Axe says he wants people to think they’re on the outs. He says Channing, Carly and Hlasa need f-d. He says I’m going to poke you, poke me back.
It looks scary from the outside. Axe asks if he’s okay. Axe says walk out the door and tell me to go f-k yourself. Axe says he’s going to show him so much love at bonus time, he can gave a third family. Bill shouts two is enough. They shove each other and tell each other they love them.
Bill walks out and screams go f-k yourself Axelrod and storms out. Back at the funeral, Lara and Axe sit silent. The minister says Donnie wants them to drink and have a good time. Walter stands and says have them all bury my picture in autumn leaves and make a wish for the world.
Chuck meets Lonnie who says he found something on Judge Wilcox. He says he looked at the sentencing history and seven years ago, things changed and he became tough but lets the white guys skate. He says black and Latino guys get slapped.
He says seven years ago he joined an investment group and one of the investments is a for profit prison group. He says they net $17k per prisoner and Wilcox is lining his pockets by convicting poor people that don’t have good lawyers.
He says the judge has a Dominican condo and is f-ing his Dominican housekeeper. Chuck is thrilled. Bryan comes to Kate’s place and is stunned by how posh it is. They sit on her couch and he says this is not from Ikea is it. She says no but it works the same way and kisses him.
Back at the funeral, we see Bill adding a leaf to the pile, then Wags. Chuck comes home and finds his dad there. He says he found his Indian head penny collection. He says he’s meeting some pals and this was on the way. Then his dad says Chuck needs to be more careful.
He says it’s a critical time and says stop f-ing up. Chuck glares and says Ali must have felt this inspired. Chuck Sr asks if he’s read the press and says they’re clubbing him like a baby seal. He says Chuck needs to leave before he gets fired.
Chuck says where would he go? Chuck Sr says he has an idea. He says take a year off, move to the farm, Wendy can open a practice for bored housewivse and he can write a book. He says that will establish his residency to run for Congress. He says Patrick Esposito is retiring and Chuck can step in for him.
Chuck says Congress does not sound fun. His dad says he shouldn’t have blown up the deal with Axe to start with like he told him. Chuck says there’s no “we” here and says the game has changed and his dad has not. He says he doesn’t need his advice and says stay the f-k out.
He storms away. Kate and Bryan lie in bed together and it’s awkward. He smiles at her. Bill shows up to Ionosphere. Carly, Channing and Hlasa greet him warmly. Carly says she heard about his brawl with Axe. He says it’s the little shop that could. He calls them all-stars.
They invite him to join them and offer champagne. He says he’ll take a beer. He says he kept his mouth shut and covered Axe and then he sh-t on him. He gives them some more investment advice and they ask if he’s sure.
Chuck comes to see Judge Wilcox and says this is not about Dollar Bill – it’s about Daquan Forrester, Julio Lopez and their 15 year and 11 year sentences. Chuck says he can’t believe he missed it for so long – all the middle class kids walking out and the blacks and Latinos going up the river.
Chuck sits on his desk and says Baldinger Prison Systems. Chuck says he has him and mentions the GF at the condo in Punta Cana. Wilcox asks what he wants. Chuck says resign immediately or the FBI will come after you.
Wilcox asks if he’ll prosecute. Chuck says no they won’t come after him if he does it this way. He says the Southern District decided his swift departure is best for the justice system and says shame on you. Chuck walks out.
Wendy shows up at Walter’s house and greets him. He says the funeral arrangements kept him distracted. She says she brought him a casserole and offers help with the secret Santa project that’s got him overwhelmed. He says Lara is helping and bringing help.
Walter says it was hard on Donnie not being able to tell her – Wendy asks what he means but Lara is there. Wendy asks if other people knew. Lara says she brought a big truck and asks why Wendy is there. She says she was just saying hi to Walter and checking in.
Lara says Walter is taken care of and family pulls together in times of crisis. She says Axe Capital is family and Wendy says she’s part of the family. Lara says of course you are. Wendy leaves but looks at Lara talking with Walter.
At the funeral, Wendy approaches Axe and asks if he’s okay and wants company. He says he’s not good company. She says he and Donnie were close and asks how long since they had a real session. She says it’s been three and a half years. Axe smiles at her. She asks him to come see her.
He doesn’t answer and eventually she leaves. Lara has their kids wrapping secret Santa gifts when Axe comes home. She says it’s Donnie’ secret Santa project and Gordie says they’re slave elves. Axe offers to call in interns to help but she stops him and says this is a teachable moment.
She says it shows them to do something for the less fortunate with their hands. He sighs and agrees to wrap. She says she ran into Wendy at Walter’s today and she was pressing him for information. She says she wonders about her value but Axe says he trusts her.
Judge Wilcox retires and Chuck shows up to the retirement party. Chuck says it’s a nice crowd and he’ll say a few words. The judge says no but Chuck insists. Chuck calls everyone to attention and says justice is rooted in truth and watered by tenacity.
He talks about a man dedicating his life to justice is noble. He says Judge Wilcox is a servant of justice. He congratulates him and thanks him for his noble service. Then he starts everyone singing for he’s a jolly good fellow. Then the FBI shows up to arrest him.
Lonnie says you’re going to jail and you may even own it. Wilcox calls him a liar and Chuck says he only told him the Southern District wouldn’t prosecute. Those people are Eastern District. Carly, Channing and Hsala find out they’ve lost almost 30% of their fund. It’s over.
Axe shows up and asks if he can take a seat. He sits on the sofa and says they should vet their information a little better. He says he could take pleasure in watching them circle the drain. He says he can seed them with $250 million to keep the lights on. He says they have to sign non-competes and share revenue.
He says he wants 40% on the seed money and total transparency and trade files every night. He says he will limit outside capital and says they can’t have more than $999 million. He says there’s no buyout and says he will count to five then it’s off the table.
He gets to the count of one and they agree. He says it’s wise and they better show up at the funeral. He walks out. At the funeral, Axe says he doesn’t go to funerals usually and sends mounds of flowers and food. He says he always gives a BS excuse.
He says he doesn’t like to think about this but there was no way he would skip this because Donnie was courage and hope. He says he was intelligent and kind. Axe says he’s angry that he’s gone and glad that he was lucky to know him while he was here. He says he admired Donnie and was proud to be his friend.
He toasts to Donnie. Bryan asks Chuck why he was working from home today. Chuck says he went to a funeral and was kicked out by his wife. Bryan says the Wilcox arrest was slick. Bryan says Wilcox was an impediment and wants someone in that seat who will owe him.
He asks if Chuck wants Adam from the AG’s office there. Chuck says everything has to fall right for it to happen. Bryan says he’s playing clear eyed. Bryan refuses a drink. Wendy sits on the steps at the funeral clutching a bottle. Wags comes to talk to her.
He asks if she’s all right. She says she’s sad. Wags says he’s a good guy and was our gay guy and was one of the few people at the office who was remotely interesting. Wendy calls Wags an animal. She drinks form the bottle and says she ruined his life.
She says she patched Donnie up and kept him in a game he hated. She says if he failed and got fired, he would have been happier as a college professor. Wags says college professors don’t leave $40 million to your family and she asks if he really walked with $40 m.
Wags says it was hyperbole and she was making her point. The oncologist is there that Axe hired. The kids are with Walter too. Axe hugs him and says he took Donnie away when he should have been with them. Walter says you made him himself again and pulled him out of a dark well.
Lara hugs Walter too. She says it was a good send off and Walter says it was very Donnie. Lara says she’ll take care of the secret Santa thing. Walter says Donnie wanted to make it to Christmas to be Santa one last time but just didn’t make it.
We see Donnie in the past at an appointment with the doctor. The oncologist told Axe that he’s got two or three results but might qualify for a clinical trial that might buy him three to six more months. He says he can get him in but it’s a rough protocol.
Axe says maybe don’t bring it up. He asks what kind of quality of life Donnie would have and the doctor agrees not to bring it up. At the funeral, Axe looks at the photo of Donnie and then walks away.
THE END!
