Chicago Fire fans will remember that at the end of season 4, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) had decided to give their relationship another chance, now that her ex-husband, Grant (Guy Burnet) had been placed into Chicago Med’s psychiatric facility. Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) realized Grant had escaped and we see him sitting in Stella’s apartment, with a sharp knife in his hands, watching him and Stella in bed together.

Chicago Fire’s season 5 begins with Stella and Severide playfully waking up, but the mood quickly changes when Stella listens to her voicemail and finds out that Grant left the hospital, without being discharged. Stella thinks she hears something and finds Grant’s hospital bracelet under her bed.

Gabriela “Gabi” Dawson (Monica Raymund) had been approved to become foster mom to the little boy, Louie that she had rescued. Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabi start their day with Louie, but Gabi makes it very clear that Matt doesn’t need to make any decisions right now. They bring Louie over to Christopher Herrmann’s (David Eigenberg) house as they leave for work, and Herrmann comments that the “family thing” looks good on them.

At the firehouse, Captain Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) is looking for Jimmy Borrelli (Steven R. McQueen), who is clearly angry and still blaming Boden for the death of his brother. Boden asks him why he wasn’t there at the badge dedication to his brother? Jimmy tells him it was too much, too soon; and walks away.

The whole station is called to a school bus accident; when they arrive it had hit head on with a burning garbage truck. There are two young boys stuck on the bus, Luca who has a steel rod right through his clavicle, once they shift the rod, one boy is safe but they can’t remove the steel rod, so they cut it and EMS takes them.

Chicago Med’s Dr. Charles calls Stella back when he learns that Grant was in her apartment and tells her he has notified Chicago PD. Severide hears her on the phone, and asks her what is going on. He is furious that Stella knew and didn’t tell him. Severide tells her to stop being blind about him; that Grant is crazy and dangerous.

Jimmy comes to see Chief Boden, and asks to be transferred back to truck. He stayed as EMS in order to remain at Station 51, but now he wants to be back on the truck. Boden tells him he will consider it but it is too soon. Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) tries to lighten the mood in the firehouse by reading some steamy “Firehouse Fiction” off the internet, but is quickly interrupted by Connie (Dushon Monique Brown).

Connie lets Casey know that Susan Weller (Lauren Stamile), his campaign manager, came by to see him while they were out on a call. Gabi gives Casey a dirty look. Stella goes to her car, and Grant is watching her from the bushes. No one sees him, but Severide comes to make sure she is okay.

Meanwhile inside the firehouse, Brett reads a sex story on the site. Randall “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) tells her they don’t need to hear it all, but both Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) and Brian “Otis” Zvonecek (Yuri Sardarov) tell Mouch to shut up. Everyone is finding the story to be very similar to their firehouse and can’t figure out who would write it.

Herrmann goes to the bunks to talk to Gabi, when he sees her upset. He says, “You look lost kiddo.” She says she doesn’t know how he can put his kids aside and run into a burning building. Gabi admits that after having Louie things are different. Herrmann tells her that she just discovered the hardest part of their job.

He tells her when he hears the bells go off, that there is a family out there just like his, and they are counting on him to help them. Chicago Fire’s Gabi is rethinking her job. She tells Herrmann that what if both her and Casey run into the same burning building and something goes wrong, and if they do, Louie would be alone. Herrmann reassures her that she is a great firefighter and a great mother, and she can do this.

Susan returns to the firehouse to apologize for her actions. Casey tells her, he is no longer interested in the political realm, and he wants to focus on being a firefighter only. Stella gets a text from Grant, making her feel safe when he tells her that he is going to live with a friend who can help him get his head straight.

Chicago Fire’s Chief Boden informs Jimmy that he has denied his request to be on Truck 81. Jimmy hands him an envelope and leaves. Boden orders Jimmy into his office in front of everyone, where Jimmy snaps and tells Boden that he got his brother killed, and he is going to take his badge for that. Boden suspends him until further notice.

When Jimmy defies him, Boden tells him to walk out the door, or he will put him through it. Jimmy looks around the room, and says, “You all know what he did!” before he stomps out. Severide and Casey go to meet with Boden, who informs them Jimmy has filed a grievance and has started an investigation into the call that killed his brother.

Casey and Gabi are at home, when Gabi asks him if he loves being a firefighter. He wants to know why she asked and she says “Louie”. Casey tells her, he will support her in whatever she does. Severide knocks at the door and has a basket full of toys for Louie, but he is there to tell them to take the apartment back, and he will figure out where to go.

Brett arrives at the bar, and sits beside Mouch, where she confronts him that he is the one writing the stories. Brett says she likes his writing, but he needs some feminine flare to his work. She offers to write together and go get published. Meanwhile at the firehouse, Otis, Herrmann and Joe think that Connie is the author to the sex stories.

Casey and Gabi go to Boden’s office, where Gabi offers to be a paramedic until the whole Jimmy thing blows over. Boden is happy she offered because he knew what it had taken for her to be a part of Truck 81. All parties leave the meeting happy. Herrmann approaches Severide about taking over the apartment over his garage, but Severide says he’d rather look around.

Gabi is happy to be back on “ambo”, and even happier she gets to drive again. They arrive to the scene of a stabbing. It’s in a rough neighborhood, and there is only one police officer to hold back a whole gang of people. Their victim, Corey begins to crash, but CPD’s Detective Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda), Gabi’s brother, arrives. Antonio says that Corey is one of his informants. When Brett saves Corey, Antonio and her exchange looks.

Chicago Fire’s Chief Boden is very adamant about Jimmy not coming back and tells Mouch he can bring that back to the union, even after Casey says he can be back on truck and under his watch. Severide tells everyone to load up, they are going for a ride. Just as Sylvie is talking to Gabi about Antonio, Mouch pushes Gabi out of the way to discuss their arrangement for writing. Louie is brought to the fire house after Cindy Herrmann says she needs to go to a meeting. Otis brings him to the kitchen and they play and eat Jell-O.

Severide takes the truck and crew to Jimmy’s house. He tells Jimmy, “shut up and listen,” that he is hurting one of the greatest men he has ever known; and continues to tell Jimmy he is cheapening his brother’s death by doing this. Severide tells him, “Man up and be the person he knows he can be.” Jimmy says, “I will handle my own affairs. Thank you,” and slams the door in Severide’s face.

Severide and the crew receive a call, and arrive to a huge house party where a man named “Character” is stuck on a utility pole that is sparking and teetering towards the pool. Severide orders all people out of the pool and tells Capp (Randy Flagler) to get the hydro shut off. Severide and Cruz manage to get Character off the hydro pole and lower him down when Cruz realizes that the home owner is Travis Brenner (Scott Elrod). Severide and Travis shake hands and he invites Severide and the crew to come back anytime.

Chief Boden is informed that his decision has been overruled and that Chicago Fire’s Jimmy will be assigned back to Truck 81, pending the inquiry. Boden is furious that he is being told how to run his firehouse, but there is nothing he can do.

Gabi and Sylvie are at Molly’s having a drink. Sylvie says anytime Gabi wants to be on “ambo”, it is fine with her. Herrmann smiles. Chicago PD’s Antonio comes in calling them his “guardian angels”, and informs them Corey will be fine. He steps in between his sister and Sylvie and says watching her perform that miracle was “something to see”. Gabi is put in an awkward position when Sylvie says she has “magic hands” and Antonio says, “I bet!” Gabi is grossed out.

Stella asks Severide if he wants to stay with her for a while, but he tells her he isn’t the best at monogamy. She retorts with, “I am not asking to put a ring on it.” Cruz jumps in and says, “He has seen a lot of highway accidents less horrific than the way he handled that.” Chief Boden arrives and asks Gabi if she will go on EMS for good, since they need to make room for Jimmy. Gabi says she is doing it for the house, Herrmann say, “Atta girl!”

The episode ends with Stella taking out the trash and runs into Grant in the alleyway. He has a knife in his hand and tells her he saw her with Severide. Stella pleas with him to get help, and he keeps calling her a “whore” and “nothing”. He tells her to shut up, Severide comes out to help Stella, and he ends up stabbing Grant, cutting his neck wide open.
