Chicago Med Season 1 Finale Spoilers ‘Timing’: Downey’s Cancer Spreads – Rhodes Considers Euthanasia

Chicago Med’ spoilers for Season 1 Finale Episode 18 ‘Timing’ reveal that the episode focuses less on patients coming into the hospital and more on the illness of one of their own as Downey’s illness takes a drastic turn for the worse. Here’s a look at some Season 1 Finale spoilers.

Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) is in the ER when Dr David Downey (Gregg Henry) is wheeled in and looks to be in dire condition. The staff pages Dr Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) to come take a look at Downey and assess his medical needs.

Turns out the surgery was not enough, and Downey’s condition is dire. He will be fighting for his life in the ‘Chicago Med’ Season 1 Finale. Sharon Goodwin (S Epatha Merkerson) oversees some critical diagnostic testing for Downey and we see he gets an MRI to try and figure out what’s going on.

Dr Rhodes tells Goodwin that the liver cancer has spread. Looks like Dr Downey’s liver cancer has metastasized to his brain, which means the skilled heart surgeon and Rhodes’ mentor is on borrowed time.

Spoilers show that Dr Downey will appeal to Dr Rhodes to help him end his life since he’s going to die anyway and the end is never pretty when cancer is in the brain. Downey tells Rhodes, “I’d just as soon check out early.”

Will Rhodes essentially euthanize his friend to save him from undue suffering? Rhodes initially tells Downey he can’t do that because it’s illegal and he could end up in jail. But will his affection for Downey override his Hippocratic oath and sensibilities as a doctor?

The teaser trailer shows the staff running to help as Dr Downey goes code blue. Did Rhodes do the unthinkable? Or is Downey dying naturally from the cancer? The team tries to revive Downey, but there is the terrible sound of flat lining.

It looks like whether it was with assistance from Rhodes or not, Season 1 will end with the death of Dr Downey. Other teasers for the ‘Chicago Med’ Season 1 Finale indicate that Dr Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) will “get clarity” from Goodwin.

This is about Goodwin giving Chuck Gleason (Frank Whaley) booze to save his life. This episode plays on the juxtaposition of Goodwin giving something bad (i.e. the liquor) to Gleason to save his life and Rhodes considering giving something bad (i.e. lethal drugs) to end Downey’s life. Are both wrong?

What do you think ‘Chicago Med’ watchers? Will Rhodes give Downey the life-ending meds he asked for and was Downey wrong to put Rhodes in this position? Share your comments below and be sure to come to CDL for a LIVE recap of ‘Chicago Med’ Season 1 Finale Episode 18 ‘Timing’ on Tuesday, May 17.
