“There’s this gigantic hole in my heart that I know is never going to go away.” Those heart wrenching words were spoken by Christina Grimmie’s father, Bud, at a public memorial service for his daughter in Medford New Jersey yesterday, one week after her horrible death.
The Grimmie’s have been relying on their strong faith, each other and the unwavering support from those around them during this difficult time in their lives. Tina, Christina’s mother attempted to speak, but she broke down before being comforted by her husband: “To anybody who says that I’m strong, I want you to know that I’m the weakest person here and I declare my dependence on Jesus Christ because I don’t have anything else. It’s just so much.”
Christina Grimmie’s family has indeed been put through more than many families can handle. The senseless and unexpected death of the 22-year-old singer in Orlando on June 10 has shocked the music world, her family, friends and fans alike. The singer drew the world’s attention when she placed third in Season Six of The Voice.
She was coached by Adam Levine and mentored by him after the close of the sixth season. Levine, after contacting Christina’s mom for her agreement, paid for the singer’s funeral and return flight home. Christina Grimmie’s older brother, Marcus, acknowledged Levine’s kindness in a Facebook post. Deeply touched, he couldn’t find the words to adequately thank him.
He also spoke at the public tribute yesterday. His words were few but impactful: “Thank God for the mark that she left on this world.”
Marcus was at the meet-and-greet when his sister was shot and killed. He tackled her killer to the ground before the gunman shot himself.
Christina Grimmie’s outright assassination has caused many musicians to rethink hosting such intimate events that bring them in close proximity to their fans. Christina embraced her killer before being shot; and many acts are concerned with being put in that same situation.
We can certainly understand why safety is such a concern. It’s sad, though that one person’s selfish, horrible and tragic actions can influence so many. Music is supposed to be fun. It’s meant to invoke emotions in the listener. Christina Grimmie loved sharing her voice and talent with the world. She will be deeply missed.
