Former WWE wrestler Chyna has died at 45. Joanie Lauer was found dead in her home on Wednesday, April 20 from a possible drug overdose. The news was shared via Chyna’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts.
“It is with deep sadness to inform you today that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero. Joanie Laurer aka Chyna, the 9th wonder of the world has passed away. She will live forever in the memories of her millions of fans and all of us who loved her. Felix Team Chyna – TheRealChyna.com.”
TMZ was the first to report the wrestler, Playboy model and porn actress’s death. The police arrived following a 911 call from a friend who had not heard from Chyna for several days. The friend went to check on Chyna and found the former wrestler unresponsive.
Police found prescription bottles at Lauer’s home but no illegal drugs. At this time Chyna’s death is being investigated as a possible drug overdose. Foul play is not suspected.
Almost two years ago Chyna posted one photo on her Instagram account. The introspective side portrait of the athlete and actress is captioned, “Behind these eyes.” At the time the pic was shared fans commented on Joanie’s beauty and how much they missed her as a wrestler in the WWE.
After her passing fans have flocked to the one and only photo on the Instagram account to express their condolences. “An angel up above now,” one fan posted. “R.I.P. & Thanks for everything. Love u so much,” said another.
Coming onto the professional women’s wrestling scene in the 1990s, Chyna gave choose to call herself the ‘9th Wonder of the World’ because men’s WWE champion Andre the Giant was already billed the ‘8th Wonder of the World.’
Chyna, who at one time held the title of WWE women’s champion, became a member of the wrestling squad called the ‘D-Generation X’ which included Triple H, Shawn Michaels. Stephanie McMahon, the WWE Chief Brand Officer, expressed condolences via Twitter.
“I just heard the tragic news that @ChynaJoanLaurer has passed. She was truly a pioneer in our industry, and she will be missed. #RIPChyna.”
