On tonight’s second hour of “Elementary”, the guys got a call about a young woman shot dead outside of her gym.
Apparently Phoebe Elliott had been working out late because of her demanding job when she called for a Zooss car to pick her up and instead a man pretending to be her ride shot her dead in the street. So what Bell, Sherlock and Joan wanted to know was why? Why did a woman who seemingly didn’t have a single enemy was lured to her death?
And the only thing they could think about was her brother. Phoebe’s brother had recently gotten out of prison for auto-theft so the detectives thought they could be a chance that he made enemies from his old days on the street or that someone must have held a grudge in prison. Yet, Keith mentioned her photo.
He said that his sister has been getting a lot of unwanted attention and that some of it even felt like a possible stalker because people have been coming up to her about a selfie she had done in the past. And that had triggered Joan’s memory. Joan had thought she knew the victim’s face, but it wasn’t until Keith mentioned the selfie that she realized from where.
Joan had seen Phoebe’s selfie in the culture section of The Dispatch. It seems an artist has been taking photos off the web and blowing them up in order to call them art. So naturally a lot of people truly believed that it was art and that he was secretly talking about the day and age in which they all lived.
And so the detectives had gone to the “artist”. However, Ephraim Hill had mistaken them for someone else. Apparently Ephraim thought that the guys had showed up because he had reported a burglary recently yet they had wanted to ask him about Phoebe. And whether or not Phoebe had a problem with her old selfie suddenly becoming art.
But Ephraim claimed that Phoebe hadn’t in fact been upset. He said that she had called him and that she had been excited about his show. And how her selfie was featured so prominently. So Phoebe didn’t come across as someone that was ashamed of it.
Someone else, however, was. Ephraim had told the police about a protestor who called him misogynistic and demanded that he remove all of the selfies he had put up. Therefore, Sherlock and Joan ended up paying this woman a visit and she showed them a very interesting image.
It seems the photo she had taken of Ephraim’s show proved that the photo he had of Phoebe was a forgery. Someone had switched her actual photo with a fake one. And probably stole the others as well as Ephraim’s computer to fool the police into believing that the photo they had was the real one.
Though the real one had a certain person in the background. It looks like Phoebe had accidently taken a picture of Louis Bowman at the very same time he had allegedly killed her good friend Marissa Kagan. So odds are Phoebe hadn’t even known that Louis was in the picture because she had testified against him at court. And told a jury about how he had basically stalked her friend in days leading to the murder.
So it probably came as a shock to her when Ephraim blew up her picture because that’s when she most likely saw Louis in the back and realized she had been sitting on his alibi for three years. Yet, she was killed soon after her picture was blown up and the “robbery” at the gallery happened within days of her death. And so Sherlock knew that Marissa’s killer was still out there because odds are she killed Phoebe as well.
Only what he couldn’t figure out was the DNA. Louis’s DNA was found all over Marissa and so that had been linchpin in the case against him. But Sherlock wondered if maybe the DNA was a lie. Joan had spoken with Louis in prison and Louis has always believed that someone framed him. And he thought it was his ex Amanda Neal.
Amanda had dropped out of college after things ended badly between them and she had gone on to join the police department. Which is where her father, cousins, uncle, and even her brother worked. So Sherlock followed up on Amanda and he saw that she hadn’t framed anyone yet she had given an unscrupulous lab specialist just what she needed.
Dr. Mercado usually listen to cops as they name people they figure is guilty and then she fakes the DNA test. She said she gives them what they needed to lock people away and the adulation didn’t necessarily play into why she did what she did. Although, once the NYPD retested her stuff, they found so many discrepancies that it would truly be a miracle if her department didn’t get sued.
Mercado had lied about Louis’s DNA test and when suspicion fell on Amanda – she said there was no way she would have faked anything. Marissa had just been a friend of hers so she was talking to everyone involved in order to get answers. And that she didn’t meant to pinpoint Louis to Mercado, but mentioned him because he had once stalked her.
However, when Sherlock said that she could have done so intentionally, she denied that charge. She said she wasn’t jealous and that there was no reason to fight over a guy if she was because Marissa was gay. Something that none of Marissa’s friends brought up because Marissa hadn’t even told her religious family.
So Sherlock asked Amanda what else she had been quiet about and it turns out Amanda knew Marissa was seeing a married woman. A woman that she had been pressuring to get a divorce. And, well, that woman was later proven to be the prosecution on Marissa’s case.
And therefore Louis had been framed. The prosecutor had initially covered up the fact it had been her wife to kill Marissa and unfortunately the prosecutor had been the one to act when Phoebe called her up to talk about her photo. So that’s why Phoebe was killed.
But if they had only been honest when Marissa died then one man wouldn’t have been wrongfully convicted and Phoebe would still be alive.
And so the one silver lining in tonight’s episode had been Joan. Who reached out to her half-sister and seems to be on her way to establishing a bond with the other woman.
THE END!
