General Hospital (GH) spoilers have heavily teased the return of Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) which makes sense as GH fans have been clamoring for his return in the year since he left. When Lulu Spencer (Emme Rylan) found a corpse on Cassadine Island wearing jewelry she recognized as her father’s, it immediately raised suspicions that the legacy character might be lurking on the island.
Whether GH showrunners are bringing Luke back for the Cassadine Island adventure or holding him off for Fall sweeps, signs clearly point to Geary’s return for a storyline arc. Here are five reasons we think that bringing back Luke Spencer soon is a great idea.
#1 Luke’s departure was a big flop with fans
Obviously, there was some drama in Geary’s final months on set between the Luke portrayer and then-head writer Ron Carlivati. Could that be why Luke’s exit was so lackluster? Was it intentionally written to marginalize the legacy character’s departure?
Fans were greatly let down that the last person Luke spoke to before he left town was Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), that other farewells were left unsaid, and then he strolled down the dock into the fog seemingly without purpose. It was meh for most viewers.
#2 GH ratings are struggling
GH ratings are not going well right now. General Hospital spoilers for upcoming action had viewership perking up a couple of weeks ago, but then more recent ratings numbers show the ABC soap is steadily dropping across all demographics. That’s troubling.
Bringing back Luke – even if it’s for a short storyline – should spike ratings (at least in the short-run) although the glacial pace of the show is likely what’s causing viewers to tune out. In addition to recruiting Geary for a return, let’s hope the show quits dragging so badly.
#3 There’s a great storyline opportunity for Luke
The last we saw of Luke, he was struggling with that devastating identity disorder and slipping into madness with the disappointing “Fluke” storyline. They salvaged it somewhat by showing the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, but it was not enough.
Even when Luke was bad (and he could be bad), he had heroic turns that GH fans loved. He left on a low note and the Cassadine Island adventure would be a great return. If Luke showed up to save his ex-wife and daughter, he’d be thoroughly redeemed in fans’ eyes.
#4 It’s the anniversary of his exit
Another reason to bring Luke back now is strictly in a sense of timing. July 27 last year was when Anthony Geary’s final episode aired. Nathan Varni remarked on the departure anniversary in a Facebook tribute post made on July 27, 2016.
If Luke was to come back soon, it would work out to a year since his departure which is nice timing. Luke doesn’t have to stick around for long – but a return at the anniversary of his departure would be a treat for fans who were disappointed this time last year at his exit.
#5 It could offer closure on Helena and Luke once and for all
Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers) and Luke have been intertwined since her character debut (played by screen icon Elizabeth Taylor back then) at his wedding to Laura. They’ve battled over the years and her sudden death and creepy will left fans hanging.
Similarly, Luke’s tortured storyline as Fluke and weird departure also let down fans. Luke’s return, if well written, could offer closure to the Helena Cassadine story and Luke’s own exit from the show in one fell swoop giving fans a satisfying resolution to both legacy characters’ departure.
What do you think GH fans? Do the General Hospital spoilers hinting at Luke’s return mean we’ll see Anthony Geary back soon? Or are GH showrunners toying with fans and planning a later return this Fall or, worse yet, no return at all and the clues are just a tease to frustrate fans?
