Kate Middleton is a fashion failure, does anyone disagee? The Duchess of Cambridge can never measure up to Princess Diana when it comes to being a fashion icon. As recently displayed by the Royal Collection Trust, Kate fails miserably when compared to Queen Elizabeth sense of style as well.
Of course Princess Diana had some mishaps over the years. The photo taken of Diana with the see-through skirt remains in the memory of Royal watchers forever. Then there was the awful blue suit with the blouse she wore for the engagement announcement In February 1981.
Who will ever forget the black strapless dress Princess Diana wore during her first outing as the fiancée of Prince Charles? The cleavage bearing dress did impress Charles though, didn’t it?
Diana’s wedding dress did leave something to be desired. But it was the 1980s, the decade of the over-the-top, enormous wedding dress with the huge bow on the behind. The 25-foot train, however, was quite something to behold.
Then there was the awful green dress with the white collar Princess Diana wore when she and Prince Charles introduced a newborn Prince William to the world. That was probably the last time Diana wore something so ugly.
By the time Prince Harry came along in 1984 Diana had gotten it right when it came to what to wear when presenting a Royal baby for the first time. The red dress wasn’t perfect, but it was much better than the outfit she wore when William was born.
The Royal Collection Trust has been sharing photos of a few of the gowns that Queen Elizabeth has chosen over the years in celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. The display is called ‘Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from the Queen’s Wardrobe.
Queen Elizabeth has been quite the fashionista over the years! As the Royal Trust Collection describes the amazing collection, these are images of Queen Elizabeth’s enduring style.
One dress featured is a scarlet-colored velvet strapless evening gown designed by Hardy Amies. This dress was worn by Queen Elizabeth sometime in the 1940s. Instagram followers commented on how lovely the dress is and that they would love to see the jewels that accessorized the gown.
Among the other comments, “What a fantastic figure [Queen Elizabeth] had!” and “I would love to see Kate in this dress.”
That brings us to the question, why doesn’t Kate Middleton have any of these classic and stunning gowns replicated? Queen Elizabeth would most likely be flattered if the Duchess of Cambridge were to honor her by choosing to have a few of these gowns recreated.
Queen Elizabeth’s wardrobe has always been age appropriate. As Her Majesty has grown older her clothes, of course, have become more matronly, something you would expect a grandmother and great-grandmother to wear.
What’s Kate’s excuse for the dowdy and matronly clothes she chooses? What is Kate trying to prove? When Princess Diana was in her early to mid-30s she was dashing around the world in gorgeous dresses that barely reached her knees. Who will ever forget the hot little black dress Diana wore post-divorce from Prince Charles?
Prince William’s mother would have been appalled by the outfits Kate wore on the Cambridge’s recent trip to India and Bhutan.
Sadly, Princess Diana was taken from us much too soon when she died in a car accident in Paris in 1996. If Diana were alive today maybe she could knock some fashion sense into Kate Middleton. And stop the Middleton Wardrobe Malfunction from showing off her undies and bare bum, again. Return to CDL for all your Royal news and gossip!
