It looks like there’s a real reason why Prince George is always dressed in crisp white shirts, impeccable and proper sweaters and shorts, knee-high socks, and buckle shoes. There’s a new report that says Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first born child is dressed in his signature style whenever he’s in public with his parents because the royal family doesn’t want him to look like a ‘suburban peasant.’
According to the Daily Mail, Prince George, who will one day be the future King of England, is dressed the way he is because of certain etiquette rules and expectations that the royal family are always expecting to abide by. Columnist William Hanson points out that no self-respecting member of the royal family would ever be caught wearing street clothes that are typically worn by everyday commoners because of their very strict class-structured style.
That’s why Kate Middleton is not only stressed out and what she’s supposed to wear during her royal engagements, but what her two children Prince George and Princess Charlotte should wear whenever they are out in public, too.
William Hanson explained, “Catherine has to dress her own children and find a balance between royal tradition and heritage and more proletariat customs, such as the “suburban” habit of making young boys wear trousers. Although I don’t really think that the sartorial rule of shorts for young boys would be a new one for Catherine. I would suspect that her own mother and mother’s friends knew this – as more well-heeled middle class mothers do – and dressed their own boys accordingly.”
Of course, there’s also the notion that Prince William and Kate Middleton are pressured to dress their kids the way they do as they are technically ‘at work’ whenever they are seen in public with their parents. In fact, both critics and fans of the royal family have noticed that Prince George is dressed differently and even has his hair combed a different way whenever he’s seen with his nanny or with his parents during official outings. That way Prince George and his sister Princess Charlotte can better blend as ‘civilians,’ especially when the public is so used to seeing them dress a certain way as royals.
Then again, it will only be a matter of time before Prince George and Princess Charlotte start demanding that they wear their own clothes and style, especially as they grow older. Tell us CDL readers, what do you think? Is Prince George’s signature style really due to the royal family’s obsession with class structure and hierarchy?
