Supernatural continues tonight on the CW with an all new Wednesday January 20, season 11 winter premiere called “The Devil in the Details,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Lucifer offers Sam (Jared Padalecki) a way out of the cage, but it comes with a steep price. Meanwhile, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel (Misha Collins) look into the angel smiting that could have killed Amara.
On the last episode, Amara (guest star Emily Swallow) unleashed her power on the local townspeople as she issued a shocking challenge. Dean (Jensen Ackles) tried to better understand the hold Amara had on him, while Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) came up with a plan that could have disastrous consequences. #Supernatural starts with Rowena and Crowley on Christmas morning. Crowley opens a gift and excitedly tells his mom he got a Sam action figure. Santa kicks in the door and it’s Lucifer. He stabs Crowley with a candy cane. He says he was a good boy and keels over.
Lucifer asks if this is what Rowena really dreams about. She says she’s been having it for months but he’s new. She asks who he is and he pulls off his beard and shows his face. Sam is stunned to find out Lucifer was giving him all the visions.
Lucifer says Rowena did as she was told and calls her an eager groupie. Sam says he knows how it ends. He tells him he can torture and taunt him but he’ll say no the Dean will come and kick his ass. Lucifer laughs that he’s betting on Dean.
Sam says he always has. Lucifer says he has it wrong. He says he doesn’t want to torture him and that’s so five years ago. He says he won’t harm one of his glorious hairs. He says Sam needs him. He touches him and they are in one of Sam’s childhood memories.
Lucifer says Sam has way more daddy issues than he does. We see a teen Sam talking to a girl at a picnic table. Crowley tells his mother she’s dead for betraying him. She says hell is Lucifer’s, not his, and she belongs to Lucifer.
He chokes her and then stops and asks how long has she been working for him. She says Lucifer came to her in a naughty dream. He asks what about her girl power coven. She says Lucifer is perfection and that’s why she let his droogs find her.
Crowley says he’s the devil and is much worse than he is. He tells her Lucifer went topside and wanted death for all demons and humans. She says he’s changed. Crowley says he just needed the love of a horrible woman.
Crowley asks why she’s doing this and she says Lucifer will stop the darkness then ascend to his throne in heaven and she’ll be at his side. Rowena says Lucifer is the only one who can beat the darkness unless he’s got the Almighty in his back pocket.
Dean drives down the road. He gets Sam’s voice mail and tells him to call him now. Then he calls Crowley by dialing 666. Dean’s vision goes wonkie and he has to stop. He gets out and vomits and coughs.
Castiel is there and asks if he’s all right. He says he came as soon as he called. Dean vomits again. Cas says he’s not okay. Dean asks what’s wrong. Cas checks his eyes and looks at his tongue. He asks how far are they from the event – the angle nuke?
He says it’s smiting sickness. He says the angels released a lot of energy so this area is poisoned. Cas says he can’t heal him and the closer he gets, the sicker he’ll get. He says that’s how Lot’s wife turned to salt. He tells Dean to go back.
Dean says he has to see if Amara is alive or dead. He says he’ll go since the sickness doesn’t affect angels. Dean agrees and says he’ll go check on Sam. Dean says if Amara is alive, bring her body out. Dean says if she’s alive, run.
Sam tells the girl about Aztec human sacrifice. He says his dad took him and his brother to see the temples last year then mentions a chupacabra. Lucifer says that girl didn’t stand a chance. The girl tells Sam she didn’t bring him there to study and kisses him.
Lucifer says boom, that’s what I’m talking about. He says that’s the Sam he remembers – bold and decisive. Lucifer tells Sam he used to be a hero and beat him. Dean looks around the bunker for Sam.
He gets a call from Crowley and he asks where Sam is. Crowley says Sam is in hell with Lucifer. Lucifer take Sam next to Stull Cemetery and they see Castiel take down Lucifer and calling him ass butt. Lucifer says he doesn’t like Sam but when he beat him there, he had balls.
Then we see a bleeding Dean and Sam telling him that he got Lucifer. Then we saw Sam fall into the pit and the ground sealed. Lucifer tells Sam he’s gone soft. Now, Cas is at the site of the smiting. He hears a noise and looks around.
He finds Ambriel who works in birth/death statistics in heaven. She says she’s heard stories about him. He asks why she’s there and she says the same reason he is. She asks if he’s going to kill her then says she’s heard he kills angels.
He puts up his blade and she says she searched the East end of the forest and found nothing weird. He says it’s the middle of the day and should not be pitch dark. She says that’s a good question. Dean calls Cas and says he needs him to meet him in Nebraska.
He says he’s going to hell. Dean knocks on a metal door and is asked for the password. He says Crowley sent me, open up. The woman asks again for the password. He sings camptown ladies doo da, etc. and they open the door. He goes inside.
He calls her a demon and she says she’s not but her name is Billie. He asks if she’s the reaper and says Sam told him she wanted to kill them. She says no, but when he dies she’ll make sure he and Sam stay dead.
She says she works with Crowley, not for him. She holds out a box and he takes it – she says it’s for the Limey. He asks what it is the just takes it. She touches a wall and runes glow then the door opens. She tells him to watch his step – it’s a long way down.
Dean heads into a brick corridor lit by torches and Billie shuts the door after him. Lucifer now takes Sam to see what he says is the worse thing he’s ever done. He says his brother was in purgatory while Sam was with a girl and a dog and just left Dean there.
Sam says he and Dean promised not to look for each other. Lucifer says he’s no longer the Sam who would sacrifice for the greater good – he says the old Sam would have closed the gates to hell.
He says he cured the mark even though he knew it was bad. Lucifer says he has so much guilt and they choose each other instead of the world every time. Lucifer says he has to be ready to die and the people he loves die to beat the darkness.
Lucifer says he’s not strong enough to win this. Lucifer says snapping necks and cashing checks is what he does. Rowena has tea with Crowley. They both take their tea the same way. Crowley excises himself.
Cas tells Ambriel he never wanted to be hated by his own kind. She says she doesn’t hate him. She says they have a lot in common then says they’re both expendable and that’s why they’re both there. She says Sam and Dean are the real heroes.
She says if the darkness is alive and mad and kills them, no big loss. She says neither of them is super important and says there’s nobility in that. He tells her to go on ahead. Dean goes down the stairs into hell carrying the metal box the reaper gave him.
Crowley is there and says Lucifer needs the Moose and probably won’t kill him. Dean wants to kill Rowena since they need her to slam Lucifer back into his hole. Crowley opens the box and pulls out a witchcatcher. He says Billie found it for him.
He tells him most were destroyed after the Inquisition and tell Dean he’s going to love this. Ambriel finds a body and turns it over. It’s Amara and she grabs Ambriel by the neck. The angel gasps in shock and Cas hears it.
Cas runs over to where he heard her and sees Amara sucking out the angel’s grace and soul. Amara leans her head back and the wind howls. The light comes back as she sucks the darkness back into herself. She looks at Cas and speaks his name.
He asks what she did to Ambriel. She says she consumed her grace and all of her. She says that really hit the spot. He has a blade and she says heaven brought the thunder and it barely scratched her paint job.
She says he reeks of fear and self-loathing. She throws him against a tree and says she can’t see why God ever took a special interest in him and says her brother had horrible taste in men. He says do it. She calls him blue eyes and says he’s not worth the effort.
She says he’s used up and then says she has a job for him. She touches her hand to his chest and he glows gold, screams, then is gone. Amara staggers – she seems weak after that. Cas shows up where Billie is and she says hey.
Crowley comes back to Rowena and she asks how’s Dean. She tells him to check his pockets before he makes secret plans. She planted a bug spell on him. Dean says it doesn’t matter if she heard. Crowley says don’t accept a cup of tea from someone who loathes she.
She chokes and drops her cup which shatters. Dean puts the witchcatcher on her. Crowley says that makes her his slave. He says hop on one foot. She curses him then starts hopping, unable to stop herself. She says – bollocks. Dean says – let’s do this.
Lucifer tells Sam it’s a lot to take in and says the world is ending and the clock is ticking. Sam asks what he wants. Lucifer says he just needs to say yes. Lucifer says he knows he doesn’t like him but Gabriel and Raphael are dead, God left and hasn’t come back.
He says Michael hasn’t done well in prison. He says he just sings show tunes and touches himself. Lucifer says they know he’s not the good guy but the darkness is the end of everything. He says he and Sam together can beat her. He tells Sam to make the right choice.
He says it’s time to save the world. They’re back in the cage now. Sam says no. Rowena is making a spell to put Lucifer back where he came from but she says if Sam says yes, he will have an anchor to earth.
Cas rushes in and says Amara is alive and sent this message. He opens his shirt and the words – I am coming – are burned into his chest. Sam tells Lucifer no and he says he’s done. He tells Lucifer it’s over. He says he talks a good game and almost sold him a few times.
He says Lucifer may beat her but last time it took him, three archangels plus God. He asks Lucifer what then and says he’ll just restart the apocalypse. Lucifer says he won’t but it’s better than what she has planned.
Sam says whether she or him win, everyone else loses. Sam says no again. He says it’s not for Dean or the past but him having faith in his friends and family. He says they will find a way to stop her. He says he’s ready to die and ready to watch people he loves die.
Then Sam adds, but I’m not ready to be your bitch. Lucifer says Plan B and attacks Sam beating him brutally. Dean runs for the cage with Cas. Lucifer brings both of them into the cage and says – welcome to the party.
Cas pulls his blade and Dean is ready for him. Lucifer says it’s about ambience. He snaps his fingers and a disco song about heaven comes on. The battle starts. Lucifer tells Cas he’s the only one who can beat the darkness.
Sam tells Dean they can’t beat him but he tells Sam they don’t have to win they just have to last a few minutes. They all take on Lucifer together but he’s still winning. Lucifer tells Sam to say the magic word or Sam will die.
Rowena cuts into her hand to drip blood into the vat where she’s making the spell and Cas gets Dean loose. Rowena chants and Lucifer asks for any last words. The cage glows bright and then Dean, Sam and Cas look at each other. Lucifer is gone.
Rowena tells the guys – you’re welcome. Dean says bite me and Crowley says he can make her do it. Crowley says this has been a train wreck and they’re done. He tells him this is done and says he’s keeping Rowena there. He tells Dean, Sam and Cas to get the hell out of hell.
They go. Dean asks Cas if he’s all right and he says he will be. Dean offers him a ride and Cas says he’ll catch up and they should go. They get in Baby and Sam asks if Cas is all right. Dean says tough day. Sam says what if Lucifer was their only hope.
Dean says the darkness is bad but her and the devil are a nightmare. Rowena massages Crowley’s temples and he asks her why she hates him. She says when she looks in his eyes she sees herself when she was nothing but a little filthy scared girl who smelled of death. She says she hates him because when he was born, his father went back to his wife.
She says she was half dead on a straw mat and she was slick with blood. She says she hates him because if she didn’t, she would love him and says love is weakness. She says she’ll never be weak again.
Crowley hears a door bang open. It’s Cas. He smiles and says – guess again. We see flashback to Cas asking Lucifer if he can really beat him and he says yes so Cas says yes. Lucifer says – I’m back baby.
She says if Lucifer was in another vessel, it’s a loophole. Lucifer slams Crowley against the wall. He tells Rowena he won’t forget what she did for him. He pulls off the witchcatcher and says she deserves a reward. He goes to kiss her then stops.
He asks can anyone else open the cage. She says just me. He says good. He looks at Crowley then snaps her neck. She slumps to the floor dead. Lucifer turns to Crowley and says – okay, let’s chat.
