The heir apparent to the Cuban Presidency was in town on tonight’s episode of “The Mysteries of Laura” and it was Laura and Jake’s job to protect him.

However, Carlos Hernandez wasn’t anything like Castro nor did envision continuing Castro’s legacy. Instead Carlos was democratic at heart and it seems like he actually wanted to rebuild the relationship that Cuba once used to share with other nations. So Carlos was not a man to be hated, he was a man to be respected. And that’s why no one could afford for any harm to come to Carlos while he was in New York.

Carlos had come to New York to discuss open trade policies in front of the UN, but for some reason dissidents that have a problem with Cuba or that nation’s past had taken to hating Carlos as well. The young man had received death threats from the moment his plane landed in the city. And there had been a crowd of violent protestors waiting for him outside of Cuba’s dignitary office.

Therefore, when One Police Plaza realized they needed to assign manpower to Carlos’s detail, they chose to go with Jake. And Laura also got sucked in because she happened to be Jake’s partner.

Though neither appeared to be needed what with Carlos’s aggressive security team. It seems that Carlos’s number one guy, Garcia, had spent twenty years in Cuba’s armed forces and he took his job at protecting Carlos quite seriously. Which is why he ended up tackling a waiter at some artsy event that had only wanted to take a picture with Carlos.

And, well after the initial embarrassment, Carlos had told his guy to take a walk around the block while Laura took a picture of him with the waiter. So the whole incident had been blown over and no one appeared to question why Garcia had never come back to the event. They just thought he still needed time and weren’t aware of anything different until Captain Santiani called Laura with some pressing news.

Apparently someone had killed Carlos’s chief of security and the Carlos’s diplomatic bag that had been with Garcia had also gone missing. Thus there had been a major breach in Carlos’s overall security. And more importantly Garcia’s death might have merely been assassin’s first step in getting closer to Carlos himself.

Garcia’s phone had revealed that someone had been trying to warn him about an assassination attempt on Carlos’s life, but it listed that the attempt was coming in days rather than exact time and location. So Laura and Jake had told Carlos that even going outside was going to be a risk for him from now on. Yet Carlos refused to be intimidated.

Carlos had mourned the loss of Garcia, but he knew that nothing should stop his overall mission in New York. Thus he wanted to continue with the press round and had even convinced Laura and Jake to let him attend an interview with Anderson Copper seeing as the interview had remained a top secret. But, in spite of what he thought, there had been protestors outside of the studio that knew Carlos was going to be there.

However, the cops later found out that most of the protestors in front of the studio had been hired on this thing called Astrotufers protesting. That’s when you pay someone to protest for you and one man in particular admitted to accepting eighty bucks to show up outside of the studio. So that’s how the protestors knew about the interview but it hadn’t explained how this third that had hired them had also seemingly gotten their hands on Carlos’s schedules.

Therefore, Laura had the dignitary building combed over by Meredith and Meredith ended up finding several bugs in everyone’s cell phone. Although the delegation hadn’t known how or when the bugs had been placed. And the only person they could think of who had access to do such a thing happened to be a friend to their government.

This Sergei that had treated them all with respect had provided the entire delegation with cellphones made by his company because he said that their cellphones from their own country wouldn’t work in the U.S. But it turns out that Sergei had set them up. He had wanted it to look like someone was going to target Carlos though in actuality he was going to use Carlos’ close scare as a way to manipulate the stock market.

So, once Sergei had been taken out of the picture, everything progressed quite nicely and Carlos had gone to complete his speech at the UN. And seeing as Sergei’s ply hadn’t been an honest threat, Laura and Jake were both pulled from Carlos’s protection detail. Though were still working on Garcia’s murder.

Garcia’s murder was looking like a robbery gone bad so that’s the angle that Santiani wanted to follow up on. Yet Laura had this feeling and after confronting Carlos’s PR manager, she found out that Carlos was going to be staying on for a little bit longer in the city in order to have surgery on his heart. Which was to take place at unauthorized hospital.

Thus Laura ended up having to race to the hospital where she found Carlos’s wife and the wife’s lover about to use his surgery to cover up murder. As it turns out – when Garcia had gotten the hint about an “El Pintor” being part of the plot to kill Carlos – Garcia quickly remembered that the painter was Cuban slang for a woman cheater. So Carlos’s wife had to kill Garcia because he would have exposed everything.

But thanks to new US and Cuban relations, her diplomatic immunity has been removed and both she and her lover were going to be facing justice in the US.

And because she had helped out on this case, Laura and Jake’s new girlfriend are becoming fast friends.

THE END!
