The Young and the Restless spoilers documented the collapse of Jack (Peter Bergman) and Phyllis’ (Gina Tognoni) relationship. Turning an often one-sided view of the world around, Mr. Abbott finally realized that he doesn’t need a woman in his life to feel complete. That’s why, as of this week, Jack said goodbye to Phyllis.
Many Y&R viewers know that life is subjective. But some people appear to see reality through an individual lens; among this contingent are those who choose to believe that the male gender is bad. Man-hating has been in vogue since at least the 1970’s.
The me, myself and I cult routinely degrade males for mostly self-serving reasons, yet remains purposely silent when a female makes a mistake. However, the betrayal that Phyllis applied to Jack’s soul serves as another sign that yes, the sexes are equal.
Equality is a long-tenured idea, steeped in religious belief as much as any secular fad. But accepting that notion as true also means admitting that both halves commit actions that are equally good, bad or indifferent. Ah yes, elements within the so-called fairer sex actually injected this accurate point into the false debate by claiming that most men were scoundrels.
Who betrayed who on two different occasions during their marriages? Who canoodled with Nick (Joshua Morrow) and created Summer (Hunter King), thereby breaking Phack’s initial nuptials? And, among other things, did Jack have an affair with Avery (Jessica Collins)? No, but Phyllis certainly did sleep with Jack’s brother when she was calling herself Mrs. Abbott.
With most digital daggers now thrown, this scribe now breaks through the fourth wall to tell readers that he likes Bergman and Tognoni greatly. Bergman is a solid, likeable actor who’s mastered a classic daytime role. As for Tognoni, she’s brought new life to the part that Michelle Stafford was first asked to embody. All the best to whatever direction Jack and Phyllis take now. The actors who play them are surely up to the challenge of working more regularly with other colleagues.
As to the issue at hand, it’s only seen as controversial by those who believe that either sex is superior. That’s actually more ridiculous than the Philly arc which was shoved at the audience by a former male head writer or various decisions that his female boss made behind the scenes until she was deposed.
No apologies are offered, or are needed regarding the following: A balanced, open-minded, actually progressive and legitimately conservative view sees women and men as equal. In this instance Phyllis was wrong. But then there were Billy’s free-will actions as well. And Jack, he was the injured party.
