Chicago Fire begins with Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) closing up Molly’s when a man arrives asking for a couple of hundred dollars to buy a suit for a job interview. Herrmann asks the man what is really going on, and when he talks about his children and needing the job, he gives him some money and wishes him good luck.
At Firehouse 51, everyone is calling him a sucker for helping the stranger. Herrmann feels that whatever he needed the money for, he needed a helping hand and he had to do it. Brian “Otis” Zvonecek (Yuri Sardarov) says he is using it for drugs.
Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) learns from Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) that he received a job offer. He tells her it is Battalion Chief in Springfield, but before she can respond Gabi Dawson (Monica Raymund) asks for her help. Stella leaves the room telling Severide they aren’t done.
Gabi and Stella find Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) extremely working out. When they ask her what is going on, she tells them maybe they can encourage her to get into shape rather than gawking like a bunch of bitches; a call comes in and all crews head out.
At the scene they find a truck that some of the cement sewer poles have fallen off and onto a vehicle. Together the fire houses work to lift the pole and remove their patient but Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) orders Chief Anderson (Michael Hanrahan) to stop because the straps are about to snap on the remaining cement, he says the clock is ticking. He tells Boden they got her and the straps snap.
Chief Boden orders everyone to stop lifting and secure the pipe; Chief Andersone is not impressed. Lt. Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) says he doesn’t know how long it will hold so they have to work fast. Once the patient is clear they release the pipes and they crash around them, in the very spot they were a few minutes earlier.
Back at the firehouse, the guys continue to tease Herrmann about the money he gave the man, and when Otis says Boden saved Anderson’s ass, Boden says he is just glad he caught it when he did and tells them to get some lunch going.
Stella confronts Severide in his office, implying he is taking the job because Anna (Charlotte Sullivan) lives there. He denies it, admitting he is considering it and plans to visit to see what they are offering him. Severide says he is asking her opinion about it because she is his friend and he cares about what she thinks. She says he will be in Springfield for 10-minutes and then hightailing it back to Chicago, or she doesn’t really know him at all.
Chief Boden calls Randall “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) and Herrmann into his office, asking if they are going to this cocktail party, are their wives going and what are they wearing? They discover it is his wife, Donna (Melissa Ponzio) asking so Herrmann promises he will have his wife, Cindy (Robyn Coffin) text her. He also asks them to keep quiet about what happened with the sewer pipes as Deputy Chief Anderson just go the promotion and he is worried about his image.
Sylvie and Gabi are at Chicago Med when Sylvie tells her she wants to make some physical changes. Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) interrupts them asking if they are okay since the new chief almost got them all killed; the rumor is running wild through the hospital and Chicago Fire department; Gabi and Sylvie receive a call and leave.
They arrive at an office party where there is an exotic dancer laying face down in the room. They believe she has overdosed. She wakes up long enough to say her chest hurts and she begins to have a seizure.
Sylvie demands to know if she took something and a woman tells them they saw a man giving her a speed ball in the bathroom. They shock her heart and says she wants to go home. The older man offers them money for their troubles and Sylvie says, “men suck!”
Matt Casey is fixing a cabinet door when Severide comes to see him, asking if he ever wants to be chief. Matt says eventually, then asks him why he is asking. Severide admits he is thinking about the future; Matt says that is how you get into trouble. Severide agrees.
Gabi returns to the rig, catching Sylvie attempting to learn a new language, German; saying its a useful language. Gabi scoffs about it and wants to know what is going on. Sylvie says she is batting zero when it comes to men; unlike Gabi whose life is perfect. Gabi assures her there were a lot of really bad breakups before Matt. She is sure her “Matt” is out there and she shouldn’t change herself to find him.
Sylvie asks how Antonio (Jon Seda) is doing; Gabi says he isn’t doing great from what she can see so Sylvie asks her to stay close to make sure he is all right. Gabi promises she will. Mouch, Otis and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) continue to badger Herrmann about his con story but tells them to read The Giving Tree, which is a great lesson. Herrmann walks away as they continue to laugh at him.
Deputy Chief Anderson accuses Chief Boden of talking about him behind his back. He continues to say he is a real wild card who has no respect for the chain of command and Boden tells him, “Look whose trading scuttlebutt.” Anderson leans close to Boden’s face and threatens him that he doesn’t want to make him an enemy.
The next morning, Boden is walking with Matt and Severide, admitting things could get tricky because Anderson has a fragile ego. Severide feels Boden should remind him that he almost got some firefighters killed but Boden says that isn’t how he operates. He tells them sometimes as chief you need to suck it up and move on; similar to being lieutenant.
Severide takes a drive to the Springfield Fire Department, where he meets with Chief Dennis Mack (Nick Boraine) who says he wants to make Springfield Fire Department the best in the world, he takes Severide to meet some of the guys.
Gabi and Matt are at home, where she suggests setting up and Alderman Matt knows with Sylvie. He doesn’t think it is a good idea to mix his government work with the firehouse. When she suggests another man, Matt asks what she is doing and she admits that she isn’t doing well since breaking up with her brother and she wants to help; Matt says he doesn’t want to hear nor talk any more about Sylvie’s love life.
Severide is given a letter and official offer if he takes the job in Springfield. Chief Mack says he will let him think it over and Severide says he wants to check out the city. He goes to Seattle Med and finds Anna talking to a cancer patient. She tells him she has missed him and wanted to call him every day, but her life is here.
He kisses her and tells her about his job offer to be in Springfield; she asks him not to do this for him. She doesn’t want him to give up his life in Chicago for her; he kisses her again as she playfully attempts to push him away. He tells her if he does this, he will do it for the right reasons; she asks what those are. He confesses that is what he is trying to figure out.
At the cocktail party, Anderson approaches Boden, Herrmann and Mouch claiming Boden damaged his reputation after he did a lot to get the promotion. He angrily tells Boden they are not good when a someone lower in command tells him how to conduct a rescue. He brings up all the bad things that has happened at Firehouse 51 recently; implying this last stunt could end his career.
Donna says they should probably go, and Anderson gets rude with her. Boden comes very close to Anderson saying he will go on record on his negligence and how firefighters almost died.
Herrmann disappoints his son, when he forgets he is supposed to go to his class as “dad of the week”. Stella finds Severide in the locker room, where she confronts him on barely knowing Anna. He says it isn’t about her, but its about him.
Everyday he stares in the mirror and the person looking back looks more and more like his dad, Benny (Treat Williams). He feels this may be the chance he is looking for. Stella understands but tells him she will miss him because they are friends and they are good together.
Otis arrives in the lunch room and wants to know about the fight between Anderson and Boden, Herrmann doesn’t want to talk about it; so once again they make fun of him being conned out of the money. He gets up and leaves the table and sits with Sylvie, who tells him not to beat himself up. He asks Lt. Matt Casey if they can go for a drive as it is kind of important.
Herrmann arrives in the classroom with the entire crew. Matt, Otis, Stella Mouch help him entertain and educate the children, who thoroughly enjoy it. Otis finally understands why Herrmann gave the man that money.
Deputy Chief Anderson arrives for an unexpected routine inspection of Firehouse 51. When he learns that Truck 81 didn’t file the paperwork for the school excursion he isn’t impressed. Boden tells Anderson when they get back from the call, they are going to talk; Anderson says he is going with him.
They find a young teen lying on the ground with a fire escape ladder stuck through him. Sylvie and Gabi tell him not to touch it and Anderson yells for Joe to get all his friends out of the alleyway.
Anderson orders them to use different equipment, Severide defies him and uses what they already have. Boden tells Anderson if he wants to take him on then do it and he will go as far as he wants to go, but for now he needs to back off his scene. Severide and Squad 3 are able to cut the ladder and save the boy.
Severide is proud of Boden, saying Anderson got in his buggy, drove off and not another word. Matt praises him saying Anderson has no cause to go after him and he needs to get that through his thick skull. Boden says him and Anderson need to learn to work together for the good of the department.
Severide learns Stella and Gabi are taking Sylvie out tonight to help her forget her troubles. Sylvie rushes up to them at the bar and tells them she is marrying Jacques from Canada, he needs a green card to stay in the United States. Gabi and Stella take a drunk Sylvie home.
At Molly’s, Joe and Mouch are sitting at the bar when the man, Greg returns, clean shaven and nicely dressed. He tells Herrmann he said he would pay him back, they shake hands and he tells him he got the job. He pulls out an envelope with the money inside, thanking him and telling him he has no idea how much his gesture meant to him. Herrmann tells him he is drinking free tonight and they all celebrate his new job.
Anderson arrives at Firehouse 51 thanking Boden for helping him realize he has been going about things all wrong. He understands now that he can’t just snap his fingers and get rid of Boden but there are actions he can take that don’t need explanation.
Anderson greets EMS and firefighters, informing them officers will remain in place for the time being but as for the rest of them, they are all getting new assignments in different firehouses, starting next shift. Boden leaves in anger.
