Chicago Justice begins tonight with Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) and Laura Nagel (Joelle Carter) and the CPD cutting the lock to a storage facility; they are quickly called over to a disturbing scene of a crib with a bloody bat, with bloody footprints to a deep freezer; inside they find a dead woman.
The unit is rented to someone who didn’t give a real name, and the address is nonexistent and was paid for five years in advance. ME Joy Fletcher (Lindsey Pearlman) reveals cause of death could have been blunt force trauma from bat or from slicing and dicing. She believes the box cutter is what did the cuts, and she has been in the freezer for 4-5 days.
Fletcher asks where the baby is? Antonio and Laura has no idea she was even pregnant and they believe if the baby died, the killer would have left it there. Laura and Antonio want to see this case through, instead of handing it over to CPD.
Anna Valdez (Monica Barbaro) brings Peter Stone (Philip Winchester) up to speed on what they discovered. Laura feels this is a woman’s crime and she was meticulous because she took everything from her purse but missed the transit card.
Travel Trainers issued the card, they are a company who make navigating through the city easier for those with developmental challenges. One of the employees says the card belongs to Julia Keys (Michele Sweeney Abrams), an aide who started maternity leave last month. The owner of the company gives them access to Julia’s desk and things.
Julia’s due date is the day they are there, Laura and Antonio shares stories about when they had their babies. They find the yoga studio she went to twice a week and learn that Julia was friends with everyone in the maternity class. After they meet with the class, who reveal Julia was having issues with her ex-boyfriend, Ryan.
Ryan says he hasn’t talked to her in about 7 months; she vanished, no emails or calls. He never knew why and asks if she is in trouble. Anna brings the folder to Stone’s office who tells her to give it to Antonio and Laura, but she was told he would want to see it; DNA proved to be from David Zachariah (William Forsythe), who was a serial killer and Stone’s first high profile case; 8 years ago he was put away for life.
David Zachariah’s case was for 10 years, young women went missing. He posed his wife out there, and once he had them he drugged them, drove them to the middle of no where, killed them, had sex with the corpse, then buried them. He admits that he plead him down, David admitted to killing Alice White and Stone got rid of the death penalty in exchange for the locations of his other victims.
Stone says there is no way David was in that storage locker, but the DNA could be from a first degree relatives; not his parents because they are both deceased. Stone wants Antonio and Laura to look deeper into Ryan, while Stone goes to see David in prison.
At the prison, Stone confronts David about his younger brother, Randy. David jokes around about how his case brought Stone his promotion and how he missed their banter. David says they tell him Randy is dead, but he isn’t sure.
Antonio returns to Ryan’s saying they know he lied, that he had spoken to Julia for 2 minutes the night she died. Ryan’s girlfriend says she had taken the call and she was the one who met with Julia. Ryan is upset to learn Julia was pregnant and he didn’t know.
They learn that another pregnant woman, Dawn was with her when they met. Laura and Antonio come to see Dawn, who is holding a newborn baby. As Dawn says she is going to put the baby down, they see that the baby is dead.
Stone informs Mark Jefferies (Carl Weathers) about the dead baby and he orders Stone to end this craziness quick. They feel they know what happened but Stone wants to know how David Zachariah fits into this. They argue that if Stone reveals this new evidence it gives him a chance to overturn his conviction.
Ryan comes to see Stone and Anna and shares his 4 years with Julia; he had no idea she was pregnant. He says no one will give him any answers; he wants to bury Julia and the baby; Stone shares that the baby was a little girl. When Ryan leaves, Anna shares that Dawn is David Zachariah’s daughter and she is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.
At prison, Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) meets with Dawn Osborn, who shares a story about her own attack when she was 11 years old; because of the fall and damage, she was never able to have any children. She felt like she wasn’t like other women who are supposed to have babies.
She realized this when she was 13, and her mother wouldn’t let her date, but her dad let her sneak out. It was when she returned she overheard her parents arguing, but her dad said, “Its not like she can get pregnant!”
Camille Osborn (Bernadette Quigley), Dawn’s mother, comes to see Stone before the trial starts. She asks if she could have done something or noticed something that could have caused this. She tells him that David raped her, and she let her husband, Ben think Dawn was his daughter. He thanks her for telling him.
Antonio tells the court how they found Dawn with the deceased child. Marshall Matthews (Demore Barnes) is her defense attorney, brings a specialist in so they can argue the warrior gene. He is trying to tell the courts that his client is insane because of the genes she inherited from her father, a serial killer. The judge allows him to show the court that this is true.
David Zachariah is on the witness stand, where he shares how it was a wave about killing the women. He said it would grow bigger and bigger, but it would all stop when he would see the veins in her forehead as he squeezed her neck.
Stone asks why killing a man wouldn’t satisfy this urge because he hasn’t killed since he arrived in prison. Stone asks him how he controlled this uncontrollable urge? He asks David if he believes since his father killed cows, he was destine to murder women? David throws it in his face that Stone is standing in his own father’s shoes right now.
Stone and Laura are at Molly’s, where she takes her drink sharing that her father was a drunk. He was a tough man but when he saw her he’d cry and tell her not to look at him. She feels maybe there could be something to this genetics theory. She pushes her drink away, as Stone assures her its not true.
Dawn is being questioned by her attorney, she talks about this pulsing in her head, and the only way to make it stop was to kill her. She reveals that they were in the locker, and she picked up the baseball bat and hit her in the head; but the pulsing and storm didn’t go away. She felt if she killed the baby too, it would stop. She admits to cutting her open and taking the baby out of her and killing it.
Stone asks if she was a born killer, is this the first person she killed? She says no. She tells the court that she killed Alice White when she was 26 years old and her father only confessed to killing her, to protect his daughter. Judge calls a recess until tomorrow.
Anna and Stone meet with Jefferies who says maybe this isn’t false. He says genetics has been a part of science long before anything else. Stone is shocked he would believe that Dawn was genetically pre-disposed to murder. Anna says Dawn didn’t know David before this trial; Jefferies tells her to prove it!
Antonio and Laura are sifting through Dawn’s home, he assures Laura that her kid is not destined to be a pill popper. Antonio finds a book called Pregnancy Procedures. Stone asks her to open the book to the chapter called Cesarean sections; she bought it and studied it to perform one on Julia. He is sure something went wrong.
Dawn says she killed the baby. Stone reveals the baby had cracked ribs, she says she had an uncontrollable urge. Stone says she didn’t try to kill the baby but to save her, she was performing CPR. Dawn shares a story about this filthy woman who had 4 filthy, skinny children. She shouts out how could this homeless hag have four children and she can’t even have one?
The jury returns to the courtroom, where they find Dawn Osborn guilty of murdering Julia in the first degree. She is guilty of murdering baby girl Osborn in the first degree as well.
Stone is served with papers, which they knew would happen. David Zachariah is planning to overturn his conviction now that there is new evidence. Anna says he might even walk, and Stone gave him immunity on the other 9 women.
At court, David presents himself, as he sits down, Stone brings up the terms of his immunity deal. It states that David must tell the whole truth to have immunity, but since he did not kill Alice White, he in fact, lied.
Dishonesty voids the plea and they have 6 hours of recordings from him revealing the details of the 9 murders known only to the killer. He brings the file to the judge saying they will be helpful in Indiana.
The judge asks why Indiana? Stone tells him 4 of the victims were discovered there and Indiana has the death penalty. The judge announces that Mr Zacariah is to remain incarcerated, impending extradiction to Indiana.
Laura goes to see the social worker who is harsh on her. She is concerned that Laura has too many work emergencies, and she is only there for the welfare of her child and what is in the best interest for her. She tells Laura that she cannot recommend her shared custody with all the instabilities in her life. Laura stands outside the building take a couple deep breathes before walking down the street.
THE END!
