Chicago Justice Season 1 Episode 13 ‘Tycoon’ Recap

Chicago Justice begins tonight with Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) leaving his house and racing down the street when he receives a text message. He arrives at a construction site where the crane has crashed into the building and collapsed onto a car; CFD and CPD are on scene. Chicago PD’s Detective Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) informs Antonio there are 4 injured and shares Evan Wheeler is deceased but he is the son-in-law of Frank Linden (Ricahrd Schiff) who is running the project.

Laura Nagel (Joelle Carter) and Antonio arrive at Chicago Med to see John Benzinger (Matt Rockwood), the crane operator. When they ask him how much he had to drink the previous night, he tells them 2 beers; but his wife doesn’t like what they are implying. Nagel wants to know why he was transferred to Riverfront but the wife tells them to leave.

Frank Linden arrives at Mark Jefferies (Carl Weathers) office as soon as he got the news; with Anna Valdez (Monica Barbaro) and Peter Stone (Philip Winchester) in his office, Jefferies asks what they can do to help. Brett Linden (Zach Shaffer) says they heard the crane operator tested positive for cocaine and written up previously for being drunk on the job. Stone is surprised and wants to know how he knew that.

Frank says his son went to law school with Evan and he was like a son to him, he asks him to take care of this while he takes care of Evan’s widow, Sarah Tollin (Emma Duncan). When Stone says neither Brett nor Frank answered his question, Jefferies tells Stone he wants him running point on this.

Stone visits Emma who is busy trying to clean up her daughter, Annaleigh’s (Maya Bednarek) toys. He offers his condolences and wants to know why Evan was at the site and confirms that she works for her father too. He asks if there is anything else she remembers about the crash other than speaking to him on the phone during the crash. They are interrupted by her daughter who is quickly sent off with the nanny because Emma hasn’t told her Evan had died.

Chicago Fire’s Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) walks through the crash site with Antonio and Nagel, explaining what happened. He confirms the bull pin was tampered with, making it brittle enough to break and someone wanted the crane to collapse.

Antonio reveals to Anna the results of the test they did on Benzinger’s thermos; he shares the cocaine was too pure for him to have gotten it on the streets of Chicago and it appears someone drugged his thermos knowing his work history. They meet with Nagel who confirms the crane was still working properly when the site closed at 8pm. They feel there was an hour gap for someone to damage the pin, they find a car leaving the site but can’t see the plate.

Anna comes to see Frank, who brags about legacy and how you don’t build a legacy pushing paper; his son, Brett seems disturbed by his words. She informs them the crane operator is not being charged with murder and is there to find out if they have any enemies. Frank gives her the name of Jim Florence and tells her Brett will give her whatever she needs. He tells her it started with threatening emails and then Florence showed up with a 9mm.

Anna meets with Florence who tells her Frank Linden uses people’s weaknesses against them and his is his workers are undocumented causing Frank to offer him $90,000 for a $2 million job. He swears the crane deal wasn’t him because truthfully Frank is the only one left building in Chicago. He says when river front fell he is certain Frank came out ahead, as he always does.

Anna goes to Stone’s office revealing Frank Linden declared bankruptcy 5 times and he made out like a bandit while everyone else got completely wiped out. She found insurance on the river front but can’t have access to it without a warrant as everything he has is on a private server; Stone attempts to get a warrant but the judge says he needs a lot more before she signs it. Antonio suggests hacking in and Stone orders him not to.

Antonio and Nagel look through the stuff Antonio obtained and explains how Danny Borelli was a good guy, father and firefighter who died in a building that was a deathtrap because of safety violations and the building was owned by Frank Linden; Antonio promises he won’t skate this time. He discovers Frank reached out to mob guy, Henry Tomczak (Michael Rebresh) six times in the last 30 days.

Nagel and Antonio go to the bar in the emails where the bartender shares what he has seen. Nagel shows a picture of the Sarah Wheeler and he confirms she was with her father, Frank and Tomczak at the bar 4 days before the crane accident.

When they tell Stone questions how they obtained the information, Antonio tells him to do whatever he wants with the information but Nagel says they investigated and it was one of her CIs who reached out to her. Stone tells them good work and leaves. Anna shows Stone the newscast the wife supposedly saw that made her rush to the accident site; the newscast was at 7:33 but she was there at 7:29.

Stone and Anna revisit Sarah confront her on the lie and tell her if her father was involved in this so they could make money, this was her chance to get ahead of it. Anna tells her her husband was murdered and it will be a charge of first degree murder; when she says she can’t help them, Anna suggests they will speak to her brother, Brett. She says no one can beat Frank and Brett worships him.

Stone threatens to arrest her right now and begins to count down from 5. He will put her daughter in child services and keep her there until she can vote. Sarah nods when Anna asks her if she knew the crane would collapse.

Anna and Stone have a meeting with Brett and Frank. Stone isn’t intimidated by Frank and encourages him to cut his losses and plead guilty of the murder of Evan Wheeler. Frank wants to know where Jefferies is as he would never sign off on this; they inform Frank his daughter revealed everything to them. Frank stands up and tells them they are going to learn the hard way as he never folds on a bluff and his daughter, Sarah will never testify against him.

Nagel and Antonio visit Henry Tomczak, where Nagel asks to take a photo of the swordfish on his wall. Once they leave his office, Nagel reveals she took a photo of the picture beside it which is the Dodge Challenger that was leaving the site just before the crane crash. They stop by his girlfriend’s house and find inside the trunk of the Challenger an empty cylinder of Difluoroethane, which can be used to make the bull pin brittle.

Jefferies comes into Stone’s office, drops a file on his desk and says he made a deal with Frank Linden. Stone is furious there is no jail time because this was an act that resulted in murder. Jefferies tells him that may be true but he isn’t convinced he can prove it. In court, Frank is give a $500,000 fine but Stone decides to have him arrested for murder; Frank tells him in front of the judge, he is making a big mistake.

Frank Linden is out in 20 minutes and meets with Jefferies in a very busy social club. He says he shouldn’t be put in that position and asks Frank if he killed his son-in-law. Frank says he loves the thrill of building high places and no one being closer to God than him; he denies killing Evan. He is angry Stone is hassling him and feels 30 years of friendship means nothing. He tells Jefferies that he is the only one who can stop him from getting to the top.

The following day court begins for the murder trial. Sarah is up first on the witness stand, who admits they were behind by 10 months on the project; also admitting if there was an accident stopping all construction they had an insurance policy for $570 million. He asks her if the crane accident was on purpose; as she looks at her father she pleads the 5th.

Outside the courtroom, Anna asks Brett if he realizes Frank killed Evan and he tells her sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to get the job done and he walks away. She confronts him about knowing all alone and figures out that Sarah was protecting him; shocked he would allow his sister to go to prison.

Jefferies agrees they have to get Frank behind bars and it hurts to see Sarah paying the prize and going to prison. Stone decides to work a new angle at a benefit; talking very loudly about the murder and all his bankruptcy cases. Stone taunts him in front of the rich prominent citizens of Chicago. Brett calls security and Stone tells him this isn’t over, he is just getting started and wishes Frank a good night.

Court begins, the people rest as Stone says they will wait for Frank’s defense. His lawyer initially says they rest too but Frank wants to speak and takes the stand. Frank goes on and on about everything he supports financially. He denies having anything to do with sabotaging the river front site.

Stone brings up Frank’s subject of his masters thesis from Columbia University; it was called In Defense of Pinto. Frank is shocked that he had a copy of that and asks him to explain to the jury about Pinto. He argued that it was okay for companies to value profits over human life and if sabotaging a project would boost profits it was acceptable.

Frank begins to laugh saying it is only theory and denies his own words. He finally snaps and yells it is all about profits, even if the wrongful death was his son-in-law, son or even his daughter. Stone says that is all and sits down.

Sarah, Frank, Brett, their attorney sit with Anna and Stone. Frank is not willing to admit guilty but will take a plea of reckless endangerment with 2 years probation. Sarah doesn’t answer when they talk about her dead husband. Stone says he will take manslaughter and Franks serves 15. Frank offers Tomczak and Stone says he will take that and Frank gets 12 years.

Frank says he will take his chances with the jury and Brett reveals it was Sarah’s idea and Frank shouts he had nothing to do with hit. Sarah cries for Brett not to do this because their father took away Evan and now her daughter will be without a mother too? Brett says they all need Frank but Stone says he doesn’t and there is no deal for any of them and he is coming after all of them.

Back in court, Frank is found guilty of murder, once it is announced Sarah is arrested too. Jefferies isn’t surprised that Frank is trying to negotiate a deal with all the dirty secrets he has to trade; he tells them to enjoy another drink because they won’t be returning for a while because most of those secrets tie into their esteem membership.
